I don't get it. Are you upset that they're briefing the press to try and change optics (you know, doing their jobs) or upset that the press reported on the briefings (also doing their jobs)?
If you can't see the difference between that and a sitting President saying "only believe what I say, ignore anything else" you've had too much kool-aid.

Optics in politics is how things look from the outside in.

Interchangeable phrases for "improving optics" would be "changing the narrative," or "rebranding." Often, however, these are superficial changes, and not indicative of any true policy shift.

communicated is use of words to transmit observations, and the way observations are known to be that rather than narratives is the existence of an independent press to turn observations into words, how is a politician working with that press to "change the optics" a part of truth? That you think media leaders and White House officials having conversations together to come to a better understanding is somehow on the same level as a wannabe despot trying to label all of the media as the enemy of the people to turn the citizenry against it. Discerning the difference between the two takes just a little bit of critical thinking.
And yes, Trump taking that tactic is playbook fascism.

So you are saying that if Trump "worked behind the scenes with the media to reshape coverage of the economy and inflation" you would be okay with that?
It is an anonymous source, so it's kind of hard to believe, but I know how Much you anti-trumpers love anonymous sources!

not be taken as fact. What does productive mean? Does it mean they weren't immediately laughed out of the room? Maybe. Does it mean the media agreed to collude together to regurgitate every they were told? Maybe. It's a meaningless comment from a source that is unreliable. Letting it rustle your jimmies is unnecessary.

Why would you assume that?
The proof is in the pudding. They can "work to reshape" but media companies are independent entities and they'll ultimately do what they wanna...and leaning on the media tends to be a great way to ensure you get negative coverage. Historically the press has never liked being told what to say. I certainly wouldn't.
The actual truth about the "state of our economy" is decidedly mixed. Gas prices are bad. Inflation is bad. Job creation was meh in November but surged hugely the month before that. Stocks are hot-and-cold right now, the big ones are doing good, the small ones generally poorly. Lot of mixed signals all over the place and no doubt COVID has hampered the recovery but generally the overall news is fair-to-decent, not the shipwreck the conservative media is claiming.
I think they'd like to control the ground rules for defining "what is a good economy", but it's definitely up in the air if the press is going to listen. My guess is it'll have limited if any effect in reality. The MSM has always been a herd of cats, good luck getting them all rowing in the same direction.

most MSM outlets will walk in lock step with the current Democrat narrative/agenda. It's demonstrably true. We've seen it over and over and over again.
Our supply chain/mfg is walking a knife edge right now, if you think the overall news is currently fair to decent you're out of touch. We're a gnats ### away from major, major problems.
