I once took over a hippie club (MUTHERS). I built a stage from old hardwood flooring ripped from trailers as I could get that free. Every night anyone could step up and do their thing. The amount of talent in Charlotte with “no venue/outlet” was awesome and amazing. Cops bugged my phone and the pay phone across the street.
The top visiting band was ‘Fried Green Tomatoes and Watermelon’ -> a blue grass hippie band from the Blue Ridge. Standing room only when they played - best I have ever heard.

I'm not so sure I wasn't there if it was the 70s. Mid, early 70s. All i know is we'd drive up 21 and it was just a big field. Was a lot of different gigs but dang all of em were good. I just wish I could remember who they were. Love the bluegrass. Maybe tpaw was right. Might have been the shroons.

MUTHERS was on Central Ave. My car was blocked in after a night class and beautiful girl in my class said lets go have a beer while they clear out. I was suddenly in a fantasy Penthouse article. She took me to Muthers, I was sure if I went in I would not come out alive. Every one there was my friend after a couple bottles of beer.

21 was South Blvd in Charlotte. The main bar was Pauls - At Morehead was the Celler. Later was Foxtrot, Yellow Rose, and ??

tugalooriver®, you just scrapped up some great memories.....Pauls on South Blvd was THE place in the early 70's. House band was good- Mike, My Brother & Me! Had a reserved front row table for Fats Domino, could touch his piano. Married the girl I was dating at the time and will hit 57yrs the 27th July. Lowered how did she put up with me for that long

In the afternoon it was topless. Paul wanted to be class, but $$ was needed. He was an OK guy.
I took a strange girl there on first date to impress her with the class of a supper club thing. Paul gave me best table. TAMS were booked and it was terrible as all us were at tables. TAMS are about sweating against the stage.
Left for the Cellar where Black and Blue were playing.
I still remember that pretty girl as she moved in and has not yet moved on.

Guys arrived and said I had to pay tribute as we had a juke box. I refused. They took me around town to other bars where the owners of those agreed I had to pay.
I did not. Hell, I was an ex vet with no future and nothing to loose. Apparently I was more trouble than MUtHERS was worth - so they backed off. Truth was I did not own Muthers, was not even an employee - just the main hippie.
