Fourteen House Pubs vote against Juneteenth holiday
Jun 17, 2021, 8:00 AM
|
|
Someone help me understand their logic, like the quote below:
“Let’s call an ace an ace. This is an effort by the Left to create a day out of whole cloth to celebrate identity politics as part of its larger efforts to make Critical Race Theory the reigning ideology of our country. Since I believe in treating everyone equally, regardless of race, and that we should be focused on what unites us rather than our differences, I will vote no,” Rosendale said.

Even bitching about the MLK holiday when it was created. Good lawd, the weeping and gnashing of teeth of the old fuddies in TigerActive Chat over that was absurd. And it's the reason we also do Confederate Memorial Day in SC as an option as a response to MLK Day becoming a federal holiday.
Imagine being so racist that getting a paid day off from work for a holiday upsets you.

Nobody gets a paid day off except for Government workers
Jun 17, 2021, 1:39 PM
[ in reply to You know, I recall people... ] |

that are paid by tax dollars. If a business loses a day of work from an employee, that free paid day off is paid for by somebody. I am only going to pay someone that makes a profit for me. The more I make off of you the more I can pay you. I am not going to take a risk by hiring you unless I get a reward that is worth the risk.
If I have to pay them to sit on their butt at home then I get no income for that day. Ultimately, that comes out of their pocket. Maybe a smaller bonus or a smaller raise, but I'm not paying for it.

Maybe Juneteenth and Thomas Jefferson's birthday should be two new holidays. I can't believe Jefferson doesn't have his own day.

I think Jefferson should have his own day. I always take that off. What his ideology did for the freedom of man at that time in the US and Europe should be celebrated. He was much more than a President. As far as Juneteenth goes, if I understand it correctly, it should be recognized. It basically represents a day in which all Americans became free.

There's another day in December
Jun 17, 2021, 9:45 PM

when the slaves in Delaware and Kentucky were freed six months later. And another day in June of 1866 when the Choctaw freed their slaves (thanks Wikipedia). But that's for African-Americans. There's another day twenty or so years later when the last Native American slaves were freed.

even know what it was until a year ago. And not just white people. I’m not against it being a holiday, but I also don’t agree with people who think it’s a travesty that it isn’t (until now) a federal holiday, or a state holiday. We can make it a holiday, that’s fine, but don’t act so upset about it not being a holiday when you didn’t even know what it was a year ago.

Not sure why that wouldn't be "PC"
Jun 17, 2021, 1:22 PM

It seems rather obvious. It gained prominence when President Trump scheduled some event on that day...don't remember what it was. I think most of us would say that we had never really heard about it until then, and I don't see what's "non-PC" about that.

Trump said he made Juneteenth famous, and many
Jun 17, 2021, 2:27 PM
|
|
media publications then said he was just ignorant and people have been celebrating it for a long time. Which, sure, some people have. Most havent. But it was painted in the media that his statement was ignorant and lots of people know about it. When in reality, most people didn’t know about it and it did become famous last year. Taking “credit” for it was dumb, but he wasn’t wrong when he said most people had never heard of it.

I think this reasoning quoted doesn't make any sense.
I don't think we need more federal holidays. Saying that would be a logical reason to vote "No," but I don't understand this Congressman's reason.

I don't think we need more federal holidays.
Did we get to just the right number of federal holidays right before this one came along? Lucky Christopher Columbus and MLK managed to sneak their days in before we reached Prod-approved capacity.

Maybe the starting point is figuring out the rationale behind federal holidays, and work from there.
Since I don't know what the rationale is, I don't even have an opinion on this issue yet. Well, other than thinking that "Juneteenth" doesn't make a ton of sense as a name for the holiday.

Not saying it’s right or wrong, but that IS their job.
The best part about federal holidays is that it costs nothing, right?
I still think a better holiday would be emancipation day. I mean Juneteenth (which just sounds dumb) was a result of the E.P.

That's when parts of two words are combined. breakfast + lunch = brunch.
Juneteenth uses the entirety of June, unaltered, so I'm afraid it's disqualified.

It doesn't cost "nothing"....
Jun 17, 2021, 10:20 AM
[ in reply to Re: Fourteen House Pubs vote against Juneteenth holiday ] |

first, federal employees get a paid day off.
Many companies will also offer this as a day off and/or be pressured to offer this as a day off. That is a huge cost. That means there would be 4 months in a row with a holiday day (April, May, June, July). I can't speak for other industries, but for a manufacturing company, that is a lot of direct labor pay with no production.

Driving around aimlessly until I arrive at a random house, I claim I had meant to go here all along, then I enslave the family and eventually kill them, and then pretend I was the person who first discovered the house.

If you really hate Columbus day, you could move to Europe and act like Columbus never existed.

I think Juneteenth is cool, but...

Growing up in an area that had a very high percentage of Black residents, I never heard of Juneteenth being acknowledged or celebrated. I did not know about it until I lived in Texas in the 1990s.
I don't think it matters very much. I am OK with it being a national holiday due to its significance. But I think national awareness of it is a fairly recent thing.

I'm not advocating for or against this holiday being

a federal holiday, but...
1) "What does it hurt?" is not the criteria by which I think we should vote for national holidays. 2) I know nothing about these 14 reps, but I HIGHLY doubt they will pay a price for their vote...my guess is that they are firmly in a conservative district. 3) My concern with this holiday would be A) we are in a very reactionary climate right now, where things are crammed through based on what appeases the Twittermob today. We should be cautious about that, and B) I don't know if it is ideal to add more ways to highlight division in society. And I know...I know..."Shouldn't we all be happy about the end of slavery?" Yes, duh. It's how the holiday will practically manifest itself, as in "Hey black Americans, don't forget that this country enslaved people like you in recent past...have we really come that far?" and "Hey white Americans, don't forget about all the horrible things people who looked like you did in the past...do you really deserve that new Ford Focus?" Maybe I'm wrong and the holiday will be used to bring people together to recognize our progress as a unified country. Heh...
Just some thoughts for the discussion.

Well stated. OTOH, people opposed the MLK holiday too.

Our history around race is a thing that needs to be dealt with in our country. Not just for Blacks but also for Indians. I mean, at the end of the day, our country was established via genocide of native peoples and the enslavement of Africans.
We would be a more perfect union if we addressed these and not just symbolically.

haven't been addressed.
AND
I'm don't understand how creating a Juneteenth holiday will really change anything about the way slavery is addressed.

or something. But I don't know where this perception of being made to feel guilty about slavery comes from. People in this country owned slaves. Whether they looked like me or not, or whether I was related to them or not, is immaterial. I've never felt like anyone was trying to make me feel guilty about it or anything. Are there people out there that are trying that?
The discussion of slavery does not make me feel guilty in any way. Nor does talk about people who look like me doing any bad things, make me feel somehow persecuted for the way I look.

To Point #3

MLK day honors a man, not a segment of the population. Black History Month is a bit of a joke (as in how much it's disregarded) and you can argue that it's 1/12 (8 percent) of the year for 13 percent of the population.
So you think holidays should be dispersed by the proportion of the races in that nation?

Black history month has always seemed racist to me, for black people and other races. For other races, because why does one race get a special history month. And for black people because, shouldn't black history be part of history in general.

$600BB doesn't sound reasonable....
Jun 17, 2021, 5:10 PM
|
|
There are ~2MM civilian federal employees, so $600BB would be about $300k/worker for 1 day off.
I'm guessing you meant $600MM in cost...that would be an avg of about $300/day which is about $80k/year salary.
