In Finebaum's defense, Dabo is yesterday's news. Clemson has been great for more than a decade and elite 2015-2020.
I am hopeful (and confident) that Clemson will be elite again soon; but, that's tomorrow's news. "[Dead lock in the hall of fame] is a great coach" isn't going to move the meter. Everyone knows; so, he went with the shiny, new champ from the SEC. No surprise, it's lube the bandwagon season, after all.
Smart will never be better than Dabo at UGA. The fact that he got them to stop tripping over their own shoes for the first time in 40 years is something; but he started with a lot higher floor.
...and only time tells consistency.

Finebaum is, and has been, old news since he floundered as a sports analyst in Birmingham. His biggest claim to fame came in 2011 during his talk show in Birmingham. A person (I can't call him a man) by the name of Harvey Updike claimed his 15 minutes of fame, and admitted to poisoning the gorgeous, old, Oak Trees at "Toomers Corner" in Auburn. Those trees must have been there since the dawn of time.....and they were IMPRESSIVE. The best analogy I can make for y'all is it would be like some sicko stealing, or defacing, Howard's Rock. But back to the subject at hand. The great, Omnipotent Finebaum is nothing more than a "pot stirrer." He cranks out books more quickly than New York City cranks out rats. They aren't even decent light reading. I can learn more from Marvel Comics. Finebaum's comments about Clemson, and Coach Swinney,lend credence to the saying "Ignorance can be overcome, but stupidity is forever. " The New York Times seems to hold him in high regard! Need I say anything else?

I think you're right, & it's just bait, but to be fair our own people throw us that bait, & we take it EVERY single time en masse.
I can't stand it, but I understand it. It makes Tigernet money to print headlines like this.
To your point, I don't listen to Finebaum but I decided to listen to this segment from the link in the article after the story was all over my feeds with furious responses from so many fans in Clemson Nation.
It's a 3-year list (which is weird, but that's the guy's thing) & he put Dabo ahead of Kirby, & while I understand Finebaum's opinion on putting Kirby ahead, particularly in a 3-year list, he added to it in a way that frankly seems so self-aware of the engagement it would create it's almost clever.
Kentucky, for example, vastly lower on the list but crickets from their fans in spite of the things they were saying in the very same segment, not to mention their 3-year success & potential for this year.
We take ALL the bait every time & I don't know what to do about it---I don't care about Finebaum, but I DO care about so many Clemson fans I see get so upset at triggering headlines in spite of the reality; it seems so vastly disproportionate I am often compelled to try to do something about it, but what can I actually do? What can any of us do?

Agree with all posters that Finebaum is a predictable shill who goes out of his way to criticize Swinney & Clemson. And I love Clemson’s chances to pass UGA by in the rankings this year with the right QB. IMHO the QB decision will be the biggest determinant of Clemson’s 2022 season, and the decision is in Dabo’s wheelhouse. Go Tigers!

My favorite tv moment in the last 20 years or so was when Ohio State, and I am not a Buckeye fan, had just beaten Alabama in 2014 playoffs. They had Finebaum and Tebow on the tube and both looked like they were about to cry. Finebaum is maybe my least favorite human being and I have no idea why his ugly mug is on the tube.

He does this in the offseason. Says some fringe comment that will make a large group angry.. he is just driving clicks and watches to his show.
During the season, he has a great show and he sticks pretty close to the truth most of the times but in the off season he has to get out there on some of this stuff to get interest going.. its just business.

They use to say that the sign of a great coach is that he could beat you with his guys and then turn around and beat his guys with your guys. Kirby couldn't beat the coots with anyone else's guys. Kirby is a great recruiter but does anybody really think that he is a great coach?
Yes our trajectory has been down. Clemson went from winning the National Championship, to runner up, to losing in the first round of the playoffs, and finally to a simple 10 win season. Trajectory aside, Finebaum doesn't want to compare just those 4 years to Kirby. One National Championship and ONLY ONE Playoff appearance. Let's see if Kirby is more than a 1 hit wonder before we make him the next Bear Bryant.

I think what gets lost in this segment (well, it's in the segment itself, albeit I'm not sure people heard it is all) is this is a 3-year ranking.
I don't know why he does it that way, but that's just what his list always is. He still put Dabo ahead, too, but the argument for him & Smart to swap places in a ranking over the last 3 years in particular just is NOT enough to get me triggered to be furious & encourage others to be upset as well, know what I mean?
Like, in the same segment they talked about UK but their coach has been on an upswing & is projected to be a frontrunner in their division for the first time since I can remember; his ranking is vastly worse & the response was crickets.
I get why the headlines are deliberately meant to be a trigger to us & create engagement (like nothing else, to be fair), but it's difficult to hear so many people in Clemson Nation get so frustrated & lose their minds about this stuff; it feels so disproportionate, especially when it ends up on Clemson radio & from many of Clemson's biggest public voices. I struggle with it & don't know what to do.

last year between Dabo & Kirby was between Kirbys Best team ever and Dabos least in 10 years.
Remember the score 10 - 3 GA with the difference being a pick six from DJ.
So based on that, do you still think Dabo is less than Kirby? Furthermore, Dabo took 2 of 3 Championships from the Legend of Alabama, still think he's #3???

It was only 10-3 because Kirby sat on the ball at the end of the game. It was evident to anyone watching that the Clemson defense was done. If Kirby had wanted to tack a score on at the end, he could have. That said, I wouldn't rank Kirby ahead of Dabo. Not yet, anyway.
