Clemson's Record vs UGA

Jul 10, 2022, 6:12 PM

I have seen a lot of the UGA fans on TNET talk about how Clemson record is not very good vs the Dogs and the results do show that. However, look at the home and away records and it really tells a different story. Our record at home is 10-9-2 at UGA it is 7-27-1. Home games are tilted in UGA's favor. Their home wins percentage is better, but I would love to play UGA 3 times at home and then 1 time at UGA until the home and away series is equal. Not sure that will ever happen and I'm sure no UGA fan would go for it.

What really counts is both schools have 3 national titles but one of theirs was when they wore leather helmets and were built like ping pong players compared to today.

Clemson has two playoff championships and one was a 15-0 season.

As far as evening the series, I hope Dabo lives to 160 and stays at Clemson until 2120. I guarantee he evens it up as a longtime member of the SEC by then.

They have 2 national titles.

....quit listening to jawja fans.

We're talking about legit "modern era titles" not made up ones.

If we're talking about made up titles Clemson has at least 2-3 more btw.

Since the "modern era" of college football (NIL and transfer portal), UGA has 1 national championship to Clemson's 0.

Many games vs UGA were during the era when the ACC

Jul 10, 2022, 6:56 PM

... had a higher entrance requirement than the SEC, creating a distinct and serious recruiting disadvantage for at least a decade. I personally knew several great players from South Carolina who didn’t meet the ACC entrance requirements at the time and played for Georgia.

Once entrance requirements evened out in the early 1970s, you started to see the competition on the field begin to even out as well. Clemson and Georgia were pretty even from the 1970s until 1990s ... then they stopped playing regularly.

Even?

From 1970 until 1995 the series was UGA 13 wins, Clemson 7 wins, with 1 tie. And it had basically been home and home since the mid-1950s.

Wasn't UGA still all female until 1975 or so?

Red Dawg, 1974-1990 ... dead even, 7-7-1

Jul 10, 2022, 9:21 PM [ in reply to Even? ]

This is the period I was referencing. The 1981 and 1990 games were particularly satisfying as were the two David Treadwell games.

Overall, Georgia has a big lead in the series, there is no argument.

But as far as the overall record goes, remember the vast majority of games in the series prior to 1974 were played in the state of Georgia.

Prior to 1974 UGA and all the other SEC teams could offer a scholarship to anyone with a pulse. ACC had much different requirements thus the imbalance on the field whenever we played Bama, Auburn, Georgia, or any SEC team.

From what I understand this is one of the reasons the chickens left our league and went independent.

Once the ACC relaxed it’s requirements we began to get competitive. Still couldn’t compete with brand new Trans Am’s though!

Actually from 1955 through 1974, 7 of the 12 games were played in Clemson with only 5 in Athens. Prior to that, many games were played away from Clemson at your request because you did not have a large enough home stadium and could sell more tickets elsewhere. Gate receipts were a big factor in funding Ath Depts back then. A lot of those neutral site games were in Augusta. It's really not a very good narrative.

And why cherry pick 1974-1990? Even so, cherry-picking your best years you're still only .500 (although only 2 of your wins were by more than 5 points, whereas 5 of ours were), so I'm not sure how big of a bragging point that is. But there were some great, exciting games during those years, and I'd like to continue the series. Like I've alluded to many times on here, I'm looking forward to the games we have scheduled - 5 more thru 2033 - as well as maybe meeting up in the CFP.

None of that is really relevant except for Ga fans.

Both are on even ground now and the series has restarted. UGA is 2-1.

I “Cherry picked” 1974-1990 specifically because ...

Jul 11, 2022, 11:08 AM [ in reply to Re: Red Dawg, 1974-1990 ... dead even, 7-7-1 ]

It was the period in which Clemson had finally recovered from their recruiting disadvantage of the 1960s and the last season when Danny Fords recruits were still around in large numbers.

Before 1974 we were hamstrung by ACC academic requirements after Danny was fired, we were hamstrung by Ken Hatfield and Tommy West.

1974-1990 is a good indication of what the series could look like if all things remain equal and we play on a regular home and home basis.

Clemson has a great record against the SEC if you consider the size of the school and where Clemson was in their development when those games were played.

One win over Georgia in 30 years

Jul 10, 2022, 10:03 PM

So yeah, they pretty much own us. That's why last year's game was soooo important to me, and it kills me we could have won with just an ounce of offensive productivity. But no ...our offense was atrocious! That's why I'm still upset over that game.

We are in their head for a reason. It’s called jealousy. Reading their posts makes me think they think the two fluke wins that got them a title in spite of day is questionable as ligit. More a lucky anomaly than who they are. Look at Saban’s record against them. They are close cousins to coots.

Just curious, which two wins were flukes?
