Mount Pleasant pro tips?

You may recall Familia APM is doing our summer vacay in Chawstun/IOP this year.

APM has only passed through Mt Pleasant since it got all bougied up.

lilAPMette is into bougie.

Are there places you would recommend to go or things to see in Mount Pleasant?

You should definitely hike to the summit of Mt Pleasant. The view is amazing.***

When the John P. Grace Memorial Bridge was the only bridge, MtP was quaint

1

Jun 19, 2025, 1:24 PM
Reply

Of course as a two way single span with no emergency lanes, everyone was scared sh!tless crossing it. And Shem Creek was a location to get fresh Atlantic shrimp…

Fortunately by the time I was driving a second bridge had been built but the John P Grace Memorial Bridge was still
used returning to Charleston as a one way bridge. Still somewhat terrifying!

Better bridges led to population growth and subsequent decline in the charm of MtP. At least from my perspective…

A little history some old timers might remember…

I used to drive real fast over the old bridge.

3

Jun 19, 2025, 1:31 PM
Reply

Especially near the wider section near the base of the bridge, because after that wider section it got real skinny, and pulling even in a truck doing 60 beside the yankee women drivers scared the #### out of them.

That, and I figured if the bridge fell down behind me, I might be able to outrun the collapse. If it fell down in front of me, maybe I could jump it. Either way...it was definitely going to fall down.

I used to have an old Grand Wagoneer.

2

Jun 19, 2025, 2:40 PM
Reply

If you never looked or noticed, the Grand Wagoneer had huge round center caps, that stuck out about 1"-2" past the plane of the wheel.

I was going over that bridge one afternoon and got a little close to the 2' high concrete barrier wall that was below the guard rail. I heard a "brrrp" for about 5-10 seconds, got home and looked and had ground off clean the ends of the center caps. Looked like somebody took a rough edged saw to them.

I remember riding over that bridge when it was 2 way as a kid. As a kid with my dad driving, it was fun.

Later when I lived in MTP, driving across that same bridge with one way traffic kept me dialed in. I always thought that one day the whole thing would fall in the Cooper River. It was so weird how the thing had a big bend in it.

I was there from ‘79-‘83 when it was definitely a quaint place to live. Used to bike to RB’s when it was a tiny locals bar and restaurant and not only bought shrimp and fish from the boats, but sold an occasional shark to the seafood market at Shem Creek.

Now, I can’t wait to get outta the place. Too many humans! Daniel Island went from a breeding ground for mosquitoes to a breeding ground for humans from the godless Yankee north.

or what we call "The 'Thern", since the outside sign lights have been burned out for at least 5 years. Hank, the owner, is a cheapass and made lemonade out of lemons, and now he won't fix the burned out lights because he a made a T-shirt that has "The 'Thern" on it. If you're looking for a bunch of old men to hang out and BS with, and/or want a good cheesesteak sandwich, that's your spot. (If you ever see an attractive woman there, she probably meant to go to the salad place next door). They also have the smallest TV's of any bar (often heard during football season: "WE'RE NOT A SPORTS BAR!") and grumpiest afternoon bartender in town. Sometimes the AC works. Also, I'm usually there on Thursdays, sometimes Fridays and the occasional Saturday. You never know who will show up. Last Friday I enjoyed a few Natties with Bobby Houck from "The Blue Dogs", and I talked to Joe Cunningham (a former SC senator) a few months ago. I've been lobbying Hank for a Hans Wenzel/Mel Washington/Doug Jones show, but he probably won't pay for that much talent in one spot.

A lot of people like Coastal Crust on Simmons street, but I won't go because:

1) Pizza
2) The younger, hip breeders in S. Mt Pleasant make their time there a chance for their kids to free range after they have apparently broken into the household crack/meth supply.

"Graze" is good eatin', even if it is in a strip mall.

I still have never been to Grace and Grit.

Art's bar is trying to rebrand themselves as a diner/restauarant. i know they get their shrimp from Magwoods son since Wayne died. But it will always smell like vomit to me while Hootie and the Blowfish play "Mustang Sally" drunk in a 6'x6' corner of the bar. Then Kevn Kinney shows up and they play all 3 of Driv'n and Cryin's hits.

Shem creek: It's a neat walkabout in the afternoon. The outside bar at the Wreck (also owned by Hank at The 'Thern) has some of the best sunset views on this side of the bridge. Not many people know that though, so it's not usually crowded.

Muddy's (below Vickery's) is quickly becoming my favorite 'creek beer drinking spot because they don't have floors (it's all sand), they sell Natty light sometimes, they allow dogs, and it reminds me of the Bahamas.

Saltwater Cowboy across the creek from Muddy's has turned into a tourist trap. Maybe it always was, but it was worth going just to see the "influencers" do tequila shots. Red's, is well, still Red's. 24 years after opening, the food still sucks and the beer is lukewarm, but watching people try and dock their boats into a 3 knot flood tide current is always fun.

The rest of Mt Pleasant is a lot of traffic, tourists going to/from the beach, and yankees wishing they were local and didn't live in Carolina Park.

Boat ride to Fort Sumter from Patriot's Point is cool. Love the museum there.

Shem Creek has a nice boardwalk.

Naan is a recent Indian restaurant that we like a lot.

Sullivan's Island Fish Camp (on Sullivan's Island of course) for lunch.

Two Blokes and Hobcaw Breweries off Long Point Road for cold beers, although Edmund's Oast Brewing in Downtown Charleston has the best beers of any SC brewery with a nice outdoor seating area next to Rancho Lewis(Southwestern cuisine from owner of Lewis's BBQ).

Revelry Brewing downtown has a nice rooftop bar.

The dinghy for fried bar food in a dive kinda setting. Downtown IOP.

Long Island Cafe for She Crab Soup. Best in the low country. Also in IOP next to the Harris Teeter.

Boathouse at breach inlet for seafood.

On Sully's hit Home Team BBQ for the best wings you'll ever taste. Poe's for a great burger and Obstinate Daughter for more good seafood. (Pro Tip for Sully's - go early unless you want to walk miles. Parking sucks in DT Sully's)

Others? Steel City Pizza, Santi's, Red Drum and The Shelter.

Bottom Line is ya ain't gonna goe wrong eating in that area, short of McDonald's.
