Neff should have to make up for lost attendance revenue

Out of his own check. Littlejohn will be a ghost town next year. Absolutely ridiculous! Clemson once again proves they don't care about basketball. Sad.

I disagree with Neff releasing the letter. Neff wants to win big and going forward this will be the most pressure Brad has ever had here. I don't think he will be able to handle it, but pulling for the team to do well...

What tough questions do you think would have been asked or answered in a press conference?

Usually, with a press conference, the press gets to ask

questions about the year in review and the year ahead, where we came up short, the reasons for that, and what the specific expectations are going forward as well as what specific opportunities and changes that will be implemented. I'm sure there are many questions that a press corps could ask that haven't been anticipated that would give fans a clearer picture of the state of the program.
With basketball being the #2 revenue generator in college athletics, there should be a transparency that a press conference provides that a short letter cannot address. This seems a bit short sighted to me if you are trying to build a successful program and address and try to reverse the growing fan apathy.

I guess you and I have different expectations for a press conference.
Yes I am sure reporters would have been able to ask questions.
I'm sure one of two of the answers would have given more information than what we got, but I am guessing that everyone would have been extremely disappointed after a press conference when Neff gave nothing but stock answers with little to no information.
The truth is that if the conversation between Neff and Brownell was meant to be public, then it would have happened in a public setting.
Clear expectations were given that the team is expected to make the NCAA tournament next season.
Neff also stated that NIL is the avenue that they believe will lead to getting better players to Clemson.
Neff isn't going to give a public ultimatum that Brownell will be fired if he doesn't do X, Y and Z. This isn't how good business is done in public.
Our right is to see the product and not the process. We don't need to know every detail that happens behind the scenes.

a press conference and what information could be provided to fans short of a detailed blow by blow of his conversation with Coach Brownell or a public ultimatum. That's a bit of red herring.
The unwillingness to take ANY questions from the press is a mistake and shows an indifference to the fans and their growing apathy towards the basketball program. At some point, we have to realize that the fans are a necessary part of the equation if we hope to elevate the program.

I've never heard a press conference where a struggling coach is retained that made fans happy.
There is no building with the fans in the off-season. Best case there is some prized transfer that rejuvenates the energy from the fans a little, but for the most part it is now a waiting game until different results can be shown.
Either Brownell wins more next year or goes is all that fans want to hear.
Neff isn't ignoring the fans. He just knows that there is nothing he can tell them at the moment to make them feel any better about the program since Brownell is staying.

Again, you present a false narrative of what I am asking for

I never said he could make the fans happy. The fans deserve more than a short letter and a take it or leave it kind of attitude it projects. Especially given the declining attendance and growing apathy of the program. Engage, enlighten and inform or at least show you value them just a little bit and clarify your thinking a bit. He is paid handsomely to run the athletic department.

I'm not sure we will reach an agreement here, but I do appreciate the conversation.
I would like to believe that Neff cares about all of Clemson's programs deeply and that is why he waited his turn to take over at Clemson.
The big explanation and outreach to the fans is needed, in my opinion, when there is a coaching change to outline the direction the program is headed.
No change in direction was made here and so Neff is simply saying that Brownell must do a better job in his current role or a change will be made. At least that's the way I took it.
Again, thank you for outlining your viewpoint on this topic so I could see the other side of things.

Would you have wanted him to pay the buyout out of his own check as well?
Brad's contract and large buyout after this season is not something Neff is responsible for.
DRad left this problem with us.

If a contract that was signed 12 months ago and was approved by the Athletic Director, Neff, and BOT is the reason they couldn’t fire him, then I’d say this will not be the only program that will be allowed to drown in mediocrity

Please explain to me how money is going to solve the issues with the basketball program. I just don’t understand, Littlejohn remodeled, expanded player facilities, remodeled locker room, head coach received a raise along with his staff and added support staff members. What does the program need to win more games?

Neff did mention support staff.
Clemson puts tons of money into the football support staff because the athletic department believes that each of those people is an integral part of success.
Maybe they are trying to add pieces to the basketball staff outside of the coaching staff since the coaching staff can't add more people.
Scouting opponents, scouting recruits, player development and more are all areas where the football support staff play a huge role in our success in football.
Maybe they want to help basketball in that way.
