An actual caller with legitimate questions just got through

on Qualk’s show. He asked why with all of DJ’s performance issues and as badly as he played Saturday, is he given a pass when other players are not. Why not put Cade in with 1st stringers around him and give him the chance? Why do the coaches get defensive when asked about DJ?
Qualk’s answer was that basically DJ is fragile, he did say fragile, and needs to be supported and coached in a different manner in order to play to his potential. The coaches know this and handle him this way.
I feel like I’m living in an alternate universe.

Well apparently the way they're handling him isn't working either. If someone is that fragile, they really shouldn't be playing anything competitive at all.

I’ve said it before, but I have faith in my source who told me in a matter-of-fact way that Dabo, DJ, and DJ’s mom all sat down last year when DJ had a mental breakdown and wanted to quit sports altogether because of the family dividing and the awful year and his injuries and Dabo talked him into staying.

I believe you. Just look at DJ’s body language on the field, he looks nervous and like he’s about to get hit by a car. Whenever he is taken out of the game, he looks like a weight has been lifted from his shoulders.

So let's say that's accurate. I get wanting to help the young man out, especially given Dabo's history, but does that guarantee a starting spot the entire next season no matter what the way we've seen?
I mean, you can easily lose the team that way. If everyone else is held to one standard and the QB, the most important position on the field, is held to a much much lower one?
Encourage the young man to stay, put him in position to succeed by all means. But you're not doing him any favors if you play this sort of favoritism. His teammates will simply come to resent him, and if he's not good enough to excel at Clemson then he's for sure not going to the NFL and having success.
I don't know... not saying you're wrong, just saying that even if that's true I'm not sure it explains what we've seen this year re: handling of the QB position.

I hate to speculate but I would have to guess his dad is/was pushing him very hard and his mom was on his side with wanting to quit. which may or may not have lead to his parents splitting up. which in turn probably made him feel like crap. Either because he disappointed his dad, or maybe he felt he was the reason for the split. just speculating though, I have no clue one way or the other.

It really doesn’t even make sense.
DJ may be a really nice kid and is well liked by his teammates. That doesn’t mean he’s the leader. Someone who is “fragile” is not the leader of any football team.

Jennings made a leap forward after one year under Purnell. Then moved backwards his junior and senior year with Brownell "holding his hand". Look up the actual stats.

If that is true, does he really think he has a chance at the NFL? Not sure they deal with fragile the same way!! Further, if the coaches are truly coddling him and can’t hold him accountable or sit him for a better player, they are not preparing him for life.

Geez, so we’ve seen him play to his potential? I’d hate to see him when he doesn’t. Although we keep hearing “our leader” - I’ve never seen a fragile leader that needed to be coddled. Sorry, I should be more touchy and in tune.

He quoted Dabo the other night from Tiger Calls. A caller had asked Dabo about how differently DJ is coached and he said that each player is different and needs to be handled and coached according to their personalities. DJ needs to be “supported”.

I watched an interview with Terry Bradshaw several years ago and he said that he would get down on himself very easily and one of the worst things that could happen to him is to have a coach yell at him. So he gets drafted to the Steelers with head coach Chuck Noll as his coach. He said 'talk about getting chewed out for just about everything I did!' He said he almost quit that first week of camp. So, apparently some guys are just sensitive to that sort of treatment. I feel bad for DJ, but at some point you have to toughen up, despite whatever bad things may have messed with you psyche.

if it were 1981, DJ would not have made it 5 minutes on the Danny Ford coached teams. And....Dabo played for Coach Stallings....how long would he have lasted at Alabama? This whole thing with DJ is just baffling.

I don’t know if I can buy into all that. Maybe it’s true but to a play a kid just because of his “fragile emotional state” would seem to set him up for certain crisis and failure if he doesn’t meet his or his team mates expectations.

I remember earlier in the season Dabo was asked about DJ's future and he made the comment that DJ would be graduating in December and that they have a plan. He never went further than that. Based on what you are saying, it makes me wonder if Dabo talked him into finishing this season and getting his degree and then moving on with his life. That would all seem kind of logical given what we have seen transpire this year and how DJ has been "handled."

Your personal issues to the playing field. That destroys teamwork. I cannot imaging coach Swinney allowing this to occur on his team. It’s likely, as fans, or supporters, that we will not learn of the truth to this statement.

We are a top 5 team, too good to deal with a fragile QB for 2 years. I think fans have had enough patience.
