Myles Murphy

This guy was not projected to go in the 1st round because of several reasons.
Myles Murphy could’ve been another Andre Branch or Clelin Ferrell at Clemson, stats wise. But people say he was too lazy and didn’t put in max effort. I believe Myles may have been given some overly harsh criticism about this. Myles actually had some very impactful stats if you think about his situation, along with Bresee as well.
When your offense can’t do any of the things that we’ve all been bit**ing about the last 2 years, then the defense will do several things. For one, they will be gassed during the game more often. When your offense can’t last 20 seconds on the field, your defense will at least be not as energetic as other teams who have offensive help.
It’s also not excusable to not try, which was apparent as times. You don’t let off even when you think your offense won’t help anyway. Not sure if that was his motive.
Murphy I believe is going to be a freak with the Bengals. A guy like this wants to win, and will give it his all if he knows it’s worth his while. That just seems to be his mindset. And a lot of players. He’s going to get bigger and quicker. Clemson players for the most part are showing development within the NFL, and that’s a major predictor of how future Clemson players will develop.

Murphy got called out for "loafing" by the coach one time and these fans lost their minds and acted like that was what defined Murphy. Dude played hard the years prior, last year he was in a new scheme with a soft spoken coach that didn't get his fire roaring the same and was playing on a team he knew was going to have the defense on the field 65% of the game.
The only disappointment I had with the defense last year was playcalling. I felt that it was worse than offense by far too conservative and playing not to lose. Simpson got jobbed the worst if they had let him play more freely he would've been a 2nd round guy at worst. All the Clemson guys that got drafted from this year's defense will be great pros. Maybe not superstars but they will contribute.

Exactly... Goodwin is way too soft-spoken to be a D coordinator... not sure what Dabo was thinking, but it will be exposed again this year and he will be forced to make another change.

I agree about the judgment towards Murphy.
But I don’t know, the offensive coordinator was fired instead of the defensive coordinator. DJ was DJ, but Streeter couldn’t call a game worth a flip. The screens work, but not when you literally do it every play. You are limited at QB, but doesn’t mean he couldn’t throw it downfield more than they had him do it.
With the defensive play calling, we were forced to help our corners in coverage. Everybody remembers how they were coming along in the first half of the season. Then Tennessee. People want to look at our D-Line history in our championship run, but our corners were extremely crucial in many games. Plenty of times. It allowed us to go after QB more, and so on.
Secondary looks very exciting this year, and Peter Woods looks like he’ll be running through ACC O-Lines like air along with Davis. It’ll be a great year for the defense.
Just wonder if Wes Goodwin’s ceiling is Brent Venables’ level.

We shall see soon enough. If Goodwin can't put a competitive defense on the field this year he should be gone. The talent is there and I think secondary is going to be a strength on the team tbh. I hope he's more aggressive, I can't stand watching a DC call a 3 man rush on 3rd and more than 5. Blitzing Carter, Woodaz, and Trotter would be a nice change up to. Last year the defense looked very much like a Vic Koening defense, bend but don't break(they break more often than not). Also seemed like he stayed very vanilla and only made changes going into the second half, couldn't adjust on the fly. He's a first year guy so I'll obviously give him that, will be interesting to watch.

gone higher. A lot of the Defensive #s both team and individual we have racked up in the past were made possible by an Offense that put pressure on the other teams Offense to shift to 1 dimensional(pass) in order to try to keep/catch up. Not only is our O not scoring like that, # of plays are down, and teams are able to stay in a game with more balanced playcalling which means we just can't pin our ears back like when we've had those 3-4 TD leads in the 2nd and 3rd quarters in the past. Our O needs to get back to its old self.

With serious money involved, Murphy will not be able to get away with it in the NFL and more than likely he won't loaf.

Myles was in every first round mock. Bresee was the one that bounced in about out. Myles was outstanding and probably the better of the 2.

You know it's normal to double team inside more than outside right? A Dexter, Aaron Donald will naturally draw more doubles in the middle. No disrespect to Brian, Myles is more of a freak with better NFL potential. His comparison is usually the #1 pick last year, Walker.

To thevalley
Myles was projected in the top-10 months ago, but went down to late 20s. This is what I meant to say I guess. And he only did bench press at NFL Combine because of hamstring. But the point is, this was best for him. Going to a team that is in a rebuild or just not good, he may have done the same thing there like he did the last 2 years we weren’t that good.
The Bengals have plenty of pieces around Murphy to let him make an impact, and he will then find his confidence. Myles was missing attitude late at Clemson, but with attitude he’s the best DE in the country. Going into 2021 after Sugar Bowl loss, Murphy was seen as the top end in the country.

Believe he had to them reschedule pro day or limit drills due to injury he was still recovering from. Needs are the biggest driver of draft picks - I’ll look back but if someone knows - how many DEs went before him and were they 3-4 ends or 4-3 ends?

He came in highly recruited but never really dominated. Never seemed to just take over a game. No doubt his talent. Hopefully he will have a great NFL career.
