Met the lakehouse neighbor. The one with the kids who

Oct 23, 2022, 6:53 PM

fly up and down the road on dirt bikes at 50mph, when the road is a small cul-de-sac no a point on the lake. They speed limit is 25. Before he got them BOTH dirt bikes (They're 14 and 15 btw), to accompany his two jet skis and three boats, and his camper, in the driveway of his house, and his golf cart and 4-wheeler(s), those same kids rode their bikes down the middle of the "big road" nearby (highway) where you would have to slam on brakes if there was a car coming, or swerve around them....yeah that guy.

He's from Florida via New Jersey. Started immediately into politics. For some reason he mistook me as some MAGA warrior or something. No clue. Kept ranting and raving about the FBI and some civil lawsuit against Trump from the 70's, morphed into the recount, the stolen election, and the microchip vaccines. Then he told me all about how he once owned $1.9 million in real-estate somewhere in Florida. Told him my parents once owned about 15 apartment units and a few houses they rented. "Smart people....passive income" was his response. I didn't tell him how they have sold it all since one house was destroyed in a drug bust, and another was burned by arson, and then you have the deadbeats who don't pay rent, evictions, and then the constant repairs, taxes, insurance, etc. It's a full time job to manage them for little profit. Even less if you don't make it a full time job. Or even less profit if you farm the management off on someone.

I was literally just in smile and nod mode. Kept prodding him further and further with stories. I sure miss the days when I did the exact same things to liberals. Make you think you agree with them and they let their guard down and the full blown nutcase emerges.

I didn't have the heart or inclination to tell him about how I really feel. It would be pointless. No one likes my apolitical theory on our "problems". It's very uncomfortable to think about politics not being the reason for (whatever pisses you off). Or the harsh reality that our "problems" are what we literally thrive on economically. He ended with some rant on illegals, and I didn't have the heart to tell him it was a bunch of Mexican illegals who built his house. I just smiled and nodded, as he drove off. He yelled 19 DAYS!!!! as he rode off. As if any candidate he chooses is going to change anything. Bless his heart.

Just what the heck is wrong with people?

People are just upset at the current mess. I also do not believe politics is our root problem, however.

We've been through enough democrats and republicans

Oct 23, 2022, 7:04 PM

of all stripes, from Clinton, to GWB, to Obama, to Trump, and nothing has changed on the "problems" front. And it won't because to fix the problem, necessitates pain, vote-losing pain. Just like the cure for being a fat### is eating less, and exercising a lot. Much easier to blame Nabisco, Nestle, or whatever.

It seems like an epidemic going on right now with emotional intelligence being at an all-time low, but maybe it's always been like this and now we just hear about these people more? I don't know. But it's bizarre.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Dude has all that in his life and he's still angry and sad

Oct 23, 2022, 9:05 PM

Well, I think the far left was always radicalized...we just got used to it because the conservative party was both stolid and solid and didn't react much to it. I mean, you'd see some Extinction Rebellion yahoo spray-painting red paint all over a storefront selling mink coats to symbolize The Blood Of Furry Creatures, or watching a couple of screeching punks glue themselves to the wall of the London Museum after throwing tomato soup on a Van Gogh to protest Big Oil, and they'd just sort of grunt and say: "You know, Martha, ain't that the durndest thing?", and Martha would go: "Yup, Henry, durn fools," and go back to her crossword puzzle. And so stuff basically stayed sane.

Now Martha and Henry are themselves radicalized, just to the right, and they're screeching about stolen elections, the Deep State, Lib'ral Conspiracies, and some of them even think anyone who isn't a ventilating lunatic is grooming young children for the benefit of their Lizard People overlords.

And here in the middle, right now, is the at-least 40%-and-growing middle that's independent and members of no political party, watching the insanity on either flank, and getting increasingly irritated by it all and wondering who the he!! speaks for us.

The answer, it seems, seems to be: nobody.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sure, but that extreme you talk about on the Left...

Oct 23, 2022, 10:04 PM

has never been in charge or even a large minority of the democratic party. Your 'Martha and Henry' seem to now be in control of the Republican Party or at least make up a large minority of it to where it can't be ignored. And it feels like that's just happened since 2016. It feels like something broke in people's brains or the timeline got messed up or something. It feels odd and bizarre but also objectively noticeable.

To me, the strange part is that it seems like the majority of America isn't interested in the middle or rationality. They want tribal. They want emotionally compromised. People don't respect politics and think none of it matters, and then they go out and prove it by voting for the disrespectful, the troll that will destroy the system they think is broken or corrupt. They don't want a fix, they want it burned down.

That's dangerous and scary.

tnet-military.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Everyone hates on Liz Cheney because she sees the problem

Oct 24, 2022, 8:49 AM

She's not wrong here. I have ALWAYS said, the wheels WILL fly off when republicans start ACTING like democrats. This coming from a life-long conservative. NOTE, I did not, and haven't for a long time, called myself a republican. My family has always been conservative. At times they were Democratic-Republicans, then national republicans, then democrats, briefly Dixiecrats, and now they're republicans. The politics and issues remain consistent, but parties morph and change as they chase power. The democratic party has been radicalized a very long time now, and republicans have been "aloof", but weak. NEITHER has our best interests in mind though. And when systems become broken, and everyone knows it, radicalization happens, and power usually shifts.

Traditionally, the American people, being educated, informed, and RATIONAL, have used a system nicknamed cognitive Madisonianism, to keep the boat afloat. We elect Presidents, and Representatives and Senators based on altering election cycles. It's a system of checks and balances that's purely spontaneous. You elect one guy, then the change doesn't happen, so you elect the other guys. But even with Obama and a dem congress, and Trump and a GOP Congress, the "problems" were never addressed. That tells you it's a systemic, not political problem we have. Obama and a dem congress, never managed to legalize illegal aliens in the US or enact immigration reform, they didn't enact single-payer healthcare, and they didn't raise the minimum wage. Trump, and a GOP Congress, didn't cut taxes (Trump's tax "cut" was as symbolic as Obama's "Obamacare"). Our trade deficit was not fixed, and illegals still flowed in. NOW, Obama and dems, as soon as cognitive Madisonianism put the opposite party in control of Congress, they started ranting and railing for a minimum wage increase, knowing it would never pass. Two years Obama had a dem Congress, and minimum wage was literally never even whispered. With Trump, he had a GOP Congress for two years. He campaigned on securing the border, building a wall, fixing the trade deficit, etc. BUT, in Trump's first two years, a border wall and the funding for it were never discussed with his GOP Congress. When the dems too back Congress under Trump, THEN the GOP ranted and railed on dems for not funding a border wall.

All this points to a systemic problem over a political problem. It is one foreseen by our founding fathers, and is exactly why our Constitution has a mechanism (NEVER used btw) to amend the Constitution without Congress being involved.

Anyway, I know Liz Cheney knows this. But even she, her father, and GWB, and other "stabpubs" will not be candid about the real problem, even though they too know it well. I am of the opinion that we have two options.....one we have a revolution, and freedom is lost, and we decline (in some order). The other is we use the ONE mechanism in the Constitution to amend it to add a clause that NO PARTY, EVER, has agreed to in Congress, term limits, and a balanced budget. Those are the two options. There is no political/party solution.

Re: Sure, but that extreme you talk about on the Left...

Oct 24, 2022, 10:22 AM [ in reply to Sure, but that extreme you talk about on the Left... ]

Oh, I'm in complete agreement the right is a bigger problem than the left...at the moment. They've gone full-on Fascist, they're the most pressing threat...we're literally at the point now where there's this really sick feedback loop between Fox News and MAGA...Fox can't moderate or it loses viewers and opens the door for the likes of Newsmax or OAN, and so MAGA politicians can't moderate lest they incur the wrath of Fox. And so nobody can seemingly stop this runaway train...and for the sake of #%#^ing TV ratings one of our political parties is literally trying to upend democracy in this nation. The GOP takes control again as it is presently constituted, that's it for democracy in the US of A. We could easily be Turkey or Hungary or Pinochet's Chile five years from now.

It's gotta be thrown down. Fox has tamp it down majorly and decide if it wants to be an American broadcasting station again (it actually was under Roger Ailes, if a Nixonian vision of America...who would have ever thought we'd miss Roger?) because right now Fox is literally a propaganda network for the global far-right as pernicious as RT. Which is an ironic contradiction in terms, seeing as how the first thing its adherents always do is promote hyper-nationalism (usually with intense racist overtones) and lean hard into anti-globalist populism.

The problem, though, is exactly like World War II, I fear we could put these Fascists-and-Nazis-in-waiting down...only to face an intense and immediate challenge from the far left. In WW2, we threw down the far-right Axis only to face the Communist Bloc, and my fear is that the MSM has drifted too far to the left to realize it's toying openly with socialist ideals, and there's massive leftist entrenchments being made in government, higher education - the state of our universities is scary right now - Hollywood, the entertainment industry, and oh, yeah, Big Tech and even corporate America. Listen to what white folks who work at, say, Amazon have to say about the over-the-top political correctness of their corporate culture. It ain't good.

The Dems have never addressed the elephants in their own room, and while they are not yet in the ascendancy, middle-of-the-road centrists like Biden seem in increasingly short supply. And Biden is old.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's not the "massive leftist entrenchments being made"

Oct 24, 2022, 2:16 PM

that are the problem... No, it's the people reacting to it. "Being made" my AXX!

You think the anti-globalist populism that FOX covers is more of a problem than the reason for it.

You just defeated your own twisted argument.

It didn't used to be like that. And it happens now instantly with the MAGA flock. They MUST know where you stand, because in their small minds, you're either an ally or an enemy--there is no in between. They've got to test you out.

This is one reason why they're a dangerous bunch. To them, everything now boils down to political identity and that's all that matters.

About 4 years ago I relayed the story of taking my mother

Oct 24, 2022, 10:29 AM

to the eye doctor, and watching an older gentleman spin himself into a fury after asking me if anyone was sitting in the chair next next to me. I have never made someone so mad by simply saying "No..it's all yours".

I was working on my laptop in the waiting room, answering some emails. He immediately went into a self induced rage starting with something about laptops, then moved into something about Hillary's e-mails, then finally something about Nancy Pelosi, and he got so angry he got up and walked outside. He was visibly mad; his face was red and the longer he sat there the madder he got. I think he finally left, because I was there for about an hour longer and never saw him again.

That guy let several people that he doesn't know and will never meet completely ruin his day. I can't imagine what every day is like near him. How did this start? Why did it start? I contribute it to Fox News and MSNBC making everyone feel like a victim; I have no idea what the reality really is.

People are crazy. I had a good friend tell me that Trump supporters should be shot. In the same conversation, she previously said her parents voted for Trump. I said, you think your parents should be shot because of who they voted for? This person is generally a little high strung but not insane. Politics (and I think media too) drives some people off the deep end.
