Do yall wash fruit before you eat it?

I kinda have just always figured "WTF's the point", but any time I pull a piece of fruit off the shelf at the super market and take a bite, or from the fruit bowl at work, people are like "you're not gonna rinse that off before eating it?"
Fundamentally, is it gonna make any difference whatsoever? I feel like it's one of those social norms like washing your hands after you take a #### that really just makes people feel better somehow.

I learned recently that black people wash their chicken before cooking it

If you watch a video of someone prepping chicken, you have lots of black folks in the comments talking about "how come he aint wash the chicken" or whatever.
You basically wash it in water, salt and lime juice BEFORE cooking it for some reason. Idk, it's a thing.

Modern chickens are soaked in bleach before packaging
Apr 28, 2025, 12:14 PM
|
|
(Or some chlorine solution) If you open up some leg quarters sometime from the store, sometimes you can get a faint whiff of the bleach. I do rinse mine off usually just to get any bleach residue off. Back in the day, you always washed off the chickens so you don't get sour vanilla poisoning. The bleach ended that necessity at the butcher/packaging level years ago.
Side note....RFK is pushing to have this process ended for chicken processing. YAY sour vanilla!!!

All this #### you don't want in 'normal' is already in the soil, roots, and plant your organic is coming from.
Any having been in both 'normal' and organic orchard, always wash your produce.

Absolutely. Do you know how many hands probably touched that fruit before you picked it up? Have you seen some of the people that frequent grocery stores? These people are picking at their a$$ and nose right before picking up the golden delicious apple. Then they decide they would rather have a Debbie cake and then place the apple back in the bin on top of the other apples.
Wash those fruits!

I try to. However, if it is my hand, I am okay with my own a$$ and nose picking germs being on my food. I just don't want Martha's germs going down my gullet.

Well you touch people's feces on everything else you touch and that ends up on your hand is my point. You touch door handles, railings, etc. etc etc.

My logical male brain tells me that rinsing fruit under cold water for 6 seconds just isn't going to make that significant of a difference in what's sitting on the outside of fruit. But let's say, for the sake of argument, that it shortens my life by a week. I guarantee fruit washers spend more than a cumulative week over a lifetime washing fuggin' blueberries and strawberries, so....it's a wash. See what I did there?

Typically in my chlorinated city H2O. Funny story. Mrs Pabst cuzzo lived in Paris for 15+ yrs. So we visited a lot due to free crash pad and kitchen to cook. So I'd hit up city farmers market. 1st day ever across pond I went G shopping. Picked up apple and aske Parisian farmer how much. Bro flipped out on me. Evidently you don't touch the fruit, ever! They put in bag for you.

Don't wash the fruit. You need to ingest small amounts of germs every day so that your body can built anti-bodies to ward off sicknesses that larger amounts of germs create
