The best thing to do is

Apr 15, 2016, 10:28 PM

Not support it and just ignore them, if anyone protests them it will just give them power.

In this country everyone has a right to express themselves, I believe and support this idea of free expression. All groups and ideas should be allowed to expressed in public no matter how perverse or racist. Allowing them an open forum expose them to the light day and allows everyone to see them for who they're, racist and perverse groups only become dangerous when forced into the darkness.

There was a time in our countries history when college campuses were free to express all ideas, sadly they have become the least open place to all ideas and thought.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The best thing to do is

Apr 16, 2016, 2:50 AM [ in reply to The best thing to do is ]

Very well said. If you don't agree with this on a personal level, then just don't attend that bar that night. If it's not something you're interested in, then just don't attend.

Even though I do lean "far left" from a Clemson perspective (pretty moderate from a national perspective), I do feel terrible about how many colleges have turned into fascist institutions when it comes to freedom of expression. Students & faculty alike have become the most entitled, spoiled, delusional groups of people out there today.

In my opinion, two big problems are the reason for the state we're in now:

1. Perceived racism after Obama's election (some justified, some not) put a very, very large split in between the left & right and their future recruitment strategies for their respective parties. As intolerable as the far left is, they have a much larger & more effective web presence, and the far right have awkwardly stumbled through adopting social media. The liberals have eaten the conservatives lunch for a decade now due to social media presence.

2. Despite past results & overwhelming evidence that they're not appealing to anyone except white conservatives, the Republicans seem dead-set on doubling down on a Thelma & Louise scenario where they drive off a cliff for whatever reason...but they don't see that they've lost the country due to their own insanity and not because reasonable people aren't willing to listen. Here's my reasoning:

- Donald Trump has been the overwhelming favorite of the party (just imagine yourself saying this in 2006!!!!) despite saying many sexually/racially controversial comments (for the most part of which, I have no problem with, with the exception of the really nutty stuff he said off the cuff), and proposing some of the most un-American policies imaginable when it comes to things like foreign policy & freedom of press. People have also seemed to totally ignore the fact that 20 years ago he said if he were going to run for president, he'd do so as a republican because "they're the dumbest group of voters in the country" and that in 2007 he was praising not only Obama, but his "good friend" Hillary.

- Some of Trump's most contested moments as Republican candidate have come when he's criticized George W Bush for starting an unprovoked and unreasonable war with Iraq. He was booed on stage, and then crowds cheered when Jeb & other candidates said W "kept us safe"....HOW DID HE KEEP US SAFE? The largest terrorist attack in our nation's history occurred under his watch and he entered the United States in TWO separate trillion dollar wars where not only thousands of Americans died, but gave birth ISIS! HOW IS THAT KEEPING US SAFE?! The highest points of the campaigns of Jeb & Rubio were when they supported invading Iraq IN HINDSIGHT despite it being a multi-trillion dollar failure! It's just insane!

I'm a babbling idiot right now, but the overall theme of my post is that people need to be a little more fluid in their beliefs sometimes. It's ok to admit invading Iraq was a bad idea, and it's ok to not protest a drag show even though you already showed up at the bar despite telling your wife you were going to the movies with a couple friends.

Re: What "bar" ... the ad says it's in Tillman Auditorium.***

Apr 16, 2016, 1:55 PM

Ok, so then don't go to Tillman Auditorium. How does that change anything?

The FCA has events in Tillman every Thursday. Why does that group get to have their meetings on campus, but some doofy queens aren't allowed to prance around?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're pretty defensive ...

Apr 16, 2016, 3:39 PM

You said it was in a bar, I said it appeared as if it was actually in Tillman.

All I did was point out your error.

But since you bring it up ... whether an event is in a bar or in Tillman makes a great deal of difference.

The difference would be university blessing and approval.

As long as the event is officially university sanctioned, then there should be no problem with using university space for that purpose.

Now, as to exactly WHY a certain group or event (be they FCA or "doofy queens") is able to obtain official university sanction, that is a different question entirely.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How am I being defensive?

Apr 16, 2016, 3:56 PM

I can get on board with your reasoning...if the university allows it, it is sort of saying "we don't have a problem with this".

I don't have a problem with the FCA using Tillman, nor do I have a problem with the drag show, and it would appear Clemson feels the same way. Their reasoning is probably similar to the main reasons being mentioned here: 1. It doesn't hurt anyone 2. If you don't like it, simply don't attend.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There's a big difference between FCA and this drag show

Apr 16, 2016, 4:24 PM [ in reply to You're pretty defensive ... ]

The difference in content is obvious. But the more inportant difference for our conversation is that the drag show is an official university sponsored event, while FCA is just an organization at Clemson that sets its own agenda and largely pays for its own programming.

The question shouldn't be whether you want to go to a drag show, but why the university is sponsoring this event.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: There's a big difference between FCA and this drag show

Apr 16, 2016, 4:51 PM

Is there a good reason they shouldn't? The University sponsors all sorts of shows.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What, exactly, is the educational value?

Apr 16, 2016, 5:12 PM

What values does this event endorse?

Even if a university chooses to sponsor a "Pride Week," it can do so in a way that doesn't emphasize flamboyance and cross-dressing. Are these really things Clemson wants to endorse? Are they "Clemson Values?" And it's not like the event is prosaic enough for students to experience it critically, like they might if a controversial speaker were sponsored (and we all know they wouldn't sponsor a speaker who pissed off liberals).

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: What, exactly, is the educational value?

Apr 16, 2016, 6:02 PM

Clemson has many events without educational value. What's the educational value of having a comedian come to the university? What's the educational value of a concert?

Here's the thing though: this isn't a "gay" event. Are most of the performers gay? Yea, probably. However this isn't a celebration of homosexuality, and it's not entertainment strictly for gay people. Coincidentally, a couple of weeks ago my coworker and I were grabbing a beer and he was talking about how he had gone to a drag show the night before for a girl's birthday party. He and his friends (who I believe are all/mostly straight) all thought it was hilarious and said it's something everyone should go see at least once. I don't expect I'll be going anytime soon, but the fact remains that this is entertainment that can be enjoyed by anyone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: What, exactly, is the educational value?

Apr 16, 2016, 6:18 PM

I just saw this is being put on for Pride Week, so it is a gay event...but this isn't an event that is only able to be enjoyed by gays.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

simple, the drag queen show isn't a religious event...

Apr 16, 2016, 4:57 PM [ in reply to There's a big difference between FCA and this drag show ]

If you read the Constitution and kept up with court rulings, with Clemson being a public school they can't sponsor religious events. If you want them to be able to, then start a movement to make Clemson a private school

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is entirely irrelevant

Apr 16, 2016, 5:05 PM

Nobody's talking about the university officially sponsoring religious events. And that an event isn't religious doesn't automatically make it appropriate for the university to sponsor, obviously.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well they did, so what are you going to do about it?....

Apr 16, 2016, 6:50 PM

Since a drag queen show is so offensive to you, go to Clemson and protest it. But, alas you won't do that. You will sit behind that computer and wait on the next issue that the far right out rage industry promotes to get mad about. Then you will come on here and complain about it just because some blogger, tv show host, or radio show host told you to be outraged about something that has been common place in American pop culture since the 70's

Have to question that statement. A movement like civil rights is being compared to someone wanting the acceptance of child molestation ? Really ?
Also , and not to be snarky here but being a cross dresser or putting on a drag show is in no way related to pedophilia. In fact , most of the pedophiles I have ever read about or saw being arrested in tv are " straight white married guys " or men of the cloth . They also tend to lean towards little kid groupings like sports organizations or scout troops .
From what I'm aware of drag queens don't care about child molestation, they care about artificial eyelashes and heels that match their purses .

Apr 16, 2016, 5:02 PM

This is an event officially sponsored by Clemson, and yet it's wildly out of step with the values of many (maybe even most) students and alumni. Just because you don't object to it doesn't mean that nobody else does.

I still wouldn't like this if it was being sponsored by some student org, but it wouldn't really be my business.

Re: And neither do you

Apr 16, 2016, 6:14 PM

I never claimed I spoke for everyone...you're the one who labeled something universally "wrong", not me.

So if many/most of the students don't like something, then the university should totally ignore the people that might?

Also, it must be popular among at least a decent amount of people, because this is actually the 4th time the University has hosted it.

Last time I checked, as citizens we have a lot of freedoms - own guns, religion (or none), assembly, speech, press, sexual orientation etc. Seems what kind of clothes people wear during a show is no big deal.

Apr 16, 2016, 4:51 PM

Why are you complaining about drag queens now? They have been apart of American pop culture since the 70's with disco music. Continued in the 80's with Boy George who was huge with the hits he put out with Culture Club. And then to the 90's Rupaul hit it big with his house music hit song. In that time period drag queens have been in tons of tv shows and movies. And there are many more examples than the one I mentioned. So you wait until 2016 to groan and moan about it. You're just doing it because the people you follow, to tell you what your opinion is, started freaking out about it. Here is a clue, the people who tell you what you think are doing it just to make money off of you because of your inability to form you own nuanced opinions.

The debt acquired by your average Clemson student... frivolous facilities spending/keeping up with the Joneses mentality while underfunding actual colleges/programs... lack of a proper dollar theater… as an alumnus and father, these things raise alarm bells for me.

However, a drag show on campus doesn't register negatively. In fact, there's a part of me that's pretty happy that Clemson seems more inclusive than when I attended.

Yes. Religous freedom of FCA some have mentioned is ridiculous. Not even close compared to this. Let's have a women lingerie walk in Tillman. Think university would allow that? Hell no. It's about political bs allowing this crap. Don't care if people enjoy it. Just do it OFF campus. Or not in a university building. This is not equal to a religious club or campus activity club.
