Why is everyone on the road a major jerk nowadays
Jun 30, 2021, 9:31 AM
|
|
Sometimes I feel like people are just driving around trying to be jerks to people. Purposely speeding up to prevent a merge, then going slow as heII just to say haha I screwed you buddy. For no reason at all. No wonder road rage incidents are going up. I know people being jerks is no new thing but man it seems to be more prevalent now than ever in my lifetime.
I guess common courtesy is as rare as common sense these days….

Agreed. My only guess is that everyone being cooped up inside for a year has driven everyone crazy. No pun intended.

I don't think it has anything to do with covid lockdowns. It's just part of the deterioration of basic civility. You see it pretty much everywhere.

There seems to be a direct correlation between this the migration of yankees to the south.

The left lane is for passing. If you're not loading anyone get in the right lane. It's not that hard. Just don't be mad when I come around you in the right lane and swerve over and brake check you hard for being an a-hole

No I'm letting idiots know to get out of the left lane and stop holding up traffic. It's proven that the main cause of accidents is speed variation. If the majority of cars are cruising at 75-78 and some idiot is cruising at 68 in the left (passing lane) they are more likely to cause an accident.

That problem has existed since cars have been a mainstream mode of transportation… You're not going to magically solve that with a PSA nor road rage in return. I hate the left lane tards, but rather not get into an accident likely I would be cited for.

I agree. Had to avoid 2 accidents Monday where a jerk kept changing lanes without notice. Some are just trying to provoke people I believe. Better look out for yourselves nowadays. I believe some are just trying to cause accidents so they can call a lawyer and wear a collar. Sometimes accidents are he said she said types of situations.

The thing that gets me is when they are in the left lane with three lanes of traffic going one-way. Then, within 100-200 feet of an intersection they expect you to yield as they try to clear three lanes of traffic to get into the right turn lane. IDIOTS!
Plus, I think people have forgotten how to understand GPS directions. I CONSTANTLY see people get into turn lanes, then as traffic starts moving on a green light, they decide to go straight.
I really wish I have a James Bond car that shoots bullets out of the headlight. Or, had a Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang car that flew and/or inflatable bumpers so I could ram them.

That wasn’t you behind my horse trailer on they way to Raleigh last week??. Cars kept coming by me & cutting in front of me with a trailer full of 2000lbs horses & slowing down quickly so between Greensboro & Burlington I rode mostly in the fast lane doing 70 the speed limit to avoid the cushion up my tail.

often, is the "pullout to pass" JUST BEFORE you get to them, and then drive 0.00005 mph faster than the vehicle they are passing, so that it takes about 10 miles to complete the pass.
Makes me wish I had the old Ben Hur RAMMING SPEED! available without hurting my own vehicle.

I hate that. They run 80 until passing then go 65. If I pull out with a car comin up fast better believe my foot is in the throttle. Or I let them go first. Most people just aren’t paying attention. Asleep at the wheel. No problem. We’ll engineer our way out of it. Self driving cars ??

I drive an hour to and from work each day. I get in the right lane and set my cruise at 75. At least twice each way I have some idiot fly past me and get in front and within a mile slow down considerably so that I have to pass them. Some of these idiots will pass me several times this way before I finally pass them and swerve hard in front with a finger firmly extended and then it will usually stop.

Begs the question why don’t people use cruise control?
Jun 30, 2021, 1:42 PM

Speaking for myself, I hate having my foot constantly on the gas pedal. It’s severely uncomfortable. Set the cruise control and relax. But that’s the thing - these freakshows are all hopped up on caffeine - among other drugs - and they’re slowing down/swerving while they text and drive (or watch actual tv shows/videos while they drive).
But anyway, 99% of cars on the road have cruise control. I simply don’t get it.

Common curtesy and civility are on the wane for sure. My guess is that its just another symptom of the cultural rot that plagues so many portions of our society. Everything is about me, me, me…now, now, now… others be ######. Unfortunately, those who have been raised this way are in for a miserable existence.
Despite how aggravating it is, I find it therapeutic to go out of my way to treat strangers (particularly those who seem disgruntled) with overt kindness and grace if for no other reason than to provide a small lesson of how good it can feel to not be an #### all the time. ‘Kill’em with kindness’ as my mother always said.

everyone else to be a moron on the road. I used to think that as well. Then several years, back, as I was driving my wife to her 30th radiation treatment, she was really nauseas and I tried to drive slower. Then some self-righteous idiot in a white pickup got all over my tail, weaving back and forth because I wouldn't speed up (single lane road). So now I think, maybe that idiot up there has a sick family member or some other thing going on and I'll not waste energy getting worked up over. Maybe just flip them a finger!?

That's an excellent point that I also try to keep in mind while driving. We've all been in situations where maybe we had to drive a bit slower because our car was having issues, we were lost, or maybe just zoned out for a moment. We've all had situations where we honestly didn't see another car and cut them off by mistake, or some other type of similar situation. We all find ourselves in those situations thinking something along the lines of "I'm a good driver, and just made a mistake, and hopefully that other person realizes that." We then find ourselves honking our horns and calling other people idiots who may be in the same situation.
A road near me has a right lane that ends at a traffic light and becomes a turn only lane. There are no signs leading up to this and it isn't really very obvious. I remember needing to go straight at this light the first time I came across it, but being in the right lane and needing to merge over to the left. I have to remind myself quite often that the car needing to get over to the left was probably the same as I was that first time, and just needs someone to give them a break and let them back over.
Of course there are plenty of terrible drivers out there who have no issues in cutting someone off, riding within an inch of your bumper, or not giving a crap if they're going well below the speed limit in the left lane. I just try to give people the benefit of doubt, and I find it's healthier for myself to have that mindset as well.

another driver is in the left lane about a car length behind. NO ONE is within 1/2 mile behind you. They speed up, pass you, then slow down to take an immediate right. Why not slow down, get behind the car in front and then slow down and make your right turn. Instead they rather cause you to slam on brakes and take evasive action to avoid a wreck.

In general it’s a basic lack of consideration for others. It’s also paired with a contemptuous disregard for laws of the road. The prevailing attitude seems to be, “it’s about me and what I want right this second, nothing else will be considered”.
I’ve given many of these behaviors names.
The Front Runner - this driver must be in front of you at all cost. Change speeds and they will speed up or slow down as necessary, whatever it takes. They gotta be in front.
The Tailgater - the opposite of the front runner. They insist that you be able to count the bugs on their windshield. Doesn’t matter what lane you are in or if you’re doing 80 or 40.
The Invisible Man - this guy insists on sitting in your blind spot, again regardless of lane or speed. His perfect day is to sit where you can’t see him for 500 miles.
Mr Swoop and Squat - all lane changes are to be made by accelerating past you with max engine output, followed immediately by a no signal lane change and a max anti skid braking event.
Lord Right of Way - these people will run over you in the grocery store parking lot. They go first at all 4 way stops and they’ll broadside you in order to enter a traffic circle. In all circumstances they have the right of way and they are indignant that you don’t know that.
Ms Hotline - nothing happening on the road matters, because I’m either on the phone with the Vatican or a G8 leader. Trust me, the most important thing going on within a thousand miles of here, is going on on my phone.
Vin Diesel - I did all the stunt driving in every “Fast and Furious” movie and you’ll now be privileged to witness my professional driving skills.

Tailgating has gotten out of control. Mostly, where I live, its young people in big pick up trucks. My wife does not agree, but when they get very close, I pat the brakes enough to make them mess up their pants to avoid rear ending me. Running into someone in the rear is almost always the fault of the person in the rear. While I'm ranting, I believe I am the only person in my town that still uses turn signals.

I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket for tailgating. It’s one of the most dangerous driving behaviors and it is never enforced.
My best tailgating story. My last job in Army, I was the driver for the Squadron Executive Officer (#2 man on base). I’m driving at night on the autobahn heading to Hohenfelds (gunnery training for armor). We’re alone, no convoy. So I’m in the right lane and we’re going about as fast as a jeep can go and the autobahn is mostly empty. Lights show up behind me and they’re closing super fast. This Mercedes gets about 6 feet off my bumper, there is no reason in the world not to pass…..then he hits his brights. He stays there for about a minute, clearly messing with us. Major Cowan reaches into the backseat, grabs his .45 and points it straight at the guy. That dude locked his brakes and disappeared. About 3 mins later he came by us in the left lane….had to be doing 150+

driving per month back in January and I’m with you, unfortunately. But it’s not surprising. Police departments are severely understaffed nationwide - that’s not a new revelation to any of us. But there is no law enforcement on our roads/highways anymore. It’s completely lawless. We may as well adopt “autobon” rules - if there are any, I don’t know. But they’ve absolutely lost control of our roadways and people are absolutely psychotic behind the wheel of automobiles. Maybe they are making them too safe. I know they are making them unnecessarily fast - we’ve had an obsession with speed and automobiles since days 1. But even car commercials will advertise with someone flying around a curve or driving a car on the verge of flipping it, revving the engine, flooring the gas from a stop, etc.
I guess these dimwits think it’s cool. I have no idea. I do know this: auto body shops and tire shops and transmission shops and brake servicing are all making a killing.
Let the good times roll, right? SMH

I try to control my temper and assume someone is making an honest mistake, or has something going on. However, the one that gets to me most times is when you're on the interstate and you're bumper to bumper with traffic without an end in sight.
You try to be safe by leaving at least a car length or two between you and the car in front of you, and suddenly the car behind you darts over to the right while nearly hitting the car in front of them in the right lane before darting over directly in front of your front bumper and the back bumper of the car in front of you. Now they're the 154th car in line instead of the 155th car, and you're forced to slow down just a bit more unless you want to continue being right up on their bumper.

I think in part it's because cars are so easy to drive. Before all wheel disc brakes, one finger on the wheel for control, and quick acceleration, you HAD to drive carefully.
I try to give jerks on the road a break, not always easy. I assume they have to go really bad and are trying to make it home in time.

Folks driving with really bad attitudes.
Tailgating, going 100 mph, weaving lane to lane, pulling out and turning in front of fast moving cars, brake checking, crossing solid lines, speeding in construction zones, middle fingers.
Very little enforcement.
Scary.

Anywhere there is the slightest bit of daylight... or moonlight, artificial light, or a school zone. They MAKE it happen
I remember getting into an argument with a ATL friend who I tagged going 57mph on Williamson near shotgun alley. Basically, their method is that you don't stop accelerating until you HIT the traffic ahead of you. Excess speed from a ATL driver is basically the same default behavior as you have in North Carolina of drivers going 4-wide in charlotte at the SAME speed (1mph under posted).

Everyone with a new turbo-charged or large displacement car has to show off.
It's insane.

I am sure no one wants to hear it but I really believe we all need more love and Jesus in our heart and then we would show more of it to one another.

It is worse than it used to be...all over. In SC and other "Red States" like here in Texas, we are seeing an influx of "Blue State" drivers. Not that Texas didn't have a$$hole drivers before, but it seems that the concentration has become much stronger of late. Not that these immigrants are bad people, they are just used to driving amongst totally stupid and arrogant people. It does bring out the road rage in anyone.

Finally a thread where I am an expert as I am certified by Northwestern U as that. I have often testified/masqueraded in court as an expert.
My take is:
-- younger folks lack experience or have no clue as to physics. -- people are impatient and believe arriving 5 minutes sooner has meaning. -- snowbirds believe they can drive on ice.

Sometimes it's hard when they come up and tailgate to flip them over with 1,200 1/2" ball bearings or spin them into the median with oil.
