Swinney on the A+ grade he gives his 2023 team

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney gave a quick recap of the Florida State game to lead off his call-in show, and Swinney remains amazed his team has found a way to be 2-2.
"That one was a huge missed opportunity, but man, our team competed their butts off. Just played tough and physical. We always talk about it's how you play that matters, and as far as how they played the game, I give them an A+. They played their butts off and you can't ask any more."
Swinney said a couple of times that turnovers are the great equalizer despite seeing everything else he'd want to see from a team. He made comparisons to his national-title winning teams and some of the luck those teams experienced.
"Of all the teams I've coached -- that's what is so heartbreaking about it so far, we've not had a team play better in the first four games," Swinney said. "When I say better, obviously we're not perfect. I'm talking about how you play. Dominating the line of scrimmage. We've outgained everybody. We've done some things in these first four games that are absolute anomalies in my time here at Clemson..."

Okay, so the players got an A+ for the game. I get it, there were some outstanding performances but what grade do the coaches get? I would be very interested in hearing this...

Yeah I felt sorry for our kicker threw into the fire like he was, I thought he did the best he could do and do not blame him for losing.At least the kick got above the line lol.

Thing is statistically he’s not lying, I know he’s gonna get crushed for coach speak though. The beginning has sucked and yet at the same time has been one of the weirdest starts ever. One would think we are just getting whipped but that’s not how it’s went.

The Clemson team that I watched CLOSELY in Durham WAS NOT the Tiger team I’ve known to love and admire over the last 60 plus years.
My team truly did not show up on Labor Day. Not all night. Tell me why Dabo!
Duke ain’t great. Duke ain’t got great players. The coaching staff ain’t great!
Go find some guys who really want to play the game for keeps.
They are out there.

We’ve taken 4 tests. We’ve passed two and failed two. If you want to put a letter grade on them that’s fine but the best we could do is a C at this point.

Wow. This is delusional. Great they’re playing hard. To give an A means the expectation had to be what? 1-3 at this point or 0-4. The first 1/3 of this season is an F. Coaches, players, whatever you want to grade. Can’t fix a problem you don’t see and thinking this team is an A means same thing over and over. So I guess he will be happy at 6-6. Good effort guys.

It feels like we could beat anybody or lose to anybody with this group.
We outplayed Duke and FSU but since we lost the turnover margin in both we lost both games.
The question is if we can tie up our loose ends (coaching included), can enough happen for us to back door in to the acccg? FSU likely in, could we end up in a tie breaker with Duke and say Miami or UNC for 3rd? If we have head to head wins over 2 of 3 would we go?
@Syracuse will tell us a lot about this 2023 team.

because if you look at it, other years they were outplayed by teams but won the game - this happened quite a bit. And we always heard something to the effect: "we made the plays we had to to win the game". Or "An ugly win is better than a pretty loss". Or even thinly veiled boasts of "ten-win seasons" when they could've easily been 8 win seasons. Now the tables have turned the other way. It happens all the time, men and their boasting are humbled. If we accepted the sun when it shone, we have to accept the rain when if falls.

nasty defenses while he was here and he always acted like they needed to clean things up and be more sounded in their execution. I never had to worry much about if our defenses were going to be ready. The moment you let your team rest...they will.
Dabo knows that.. i don't know what he was thinking here. I know he doesn't want his team to get down on themselves so maybe he sees that we're past all the motivation talk and more on the keeping everybody from quitting talk. I guess when you have a really dominant team you tell them they have alot of work to do and if you have a mediocre team you tell them "hey you're doing great buddy! I'm guessing we need the latter on this team.

This team lost to an average Duke team. Dabo really spins it for alums and fans. It's quite a 5-star country club environment.

Yeah, if best is standard we are far away from that at this point. We played better saturday but as they say two or three plays decides close games and we failed period.
