I pursue notable things to get affirmation, from family, work, whoever, in this system where validation is a cure for aloneness. For the same reason, I have done 'great things for God'. Never ended well. Jesus instead said: "No thanks. The Father will give me all the affirmation I need without prereqs, and nothing here can give it."
"Well, okay, but you'll need control of your circumstances. Fail to secure that, and some little pissant governor can, well, you know. And here's the thing: I hold the keys. I can give you all of it. Take it, and I'll stand aside."
I check the 401 performance every blinking day: I just dont want to be without the means to handle whatever comes up. Jesus said, "I think we're done. No dice, so do what you gotta do. See you down the road."
Respect, affirmation, security. I need them deeply, and I have violated all of The 10 to get them. Never quite did. Jesus offers us the most freeing and most difficult choice imaginable: We can have them, but only by choosing to not pursue them. We trust Him for them, or stay in the gerbil wheel. In choice, I know I have surrendered. In practice, I fail. So I sing Amazing Grace.
