The era of old and serious money dominating college football is upon us

Every dog will have its today, but there is a new era of old and serious money dominating college football now and into the near future.

Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, and Notre Dame have figured out the NIL roster accrual and management. Congratulations to them as they have put aside the old SEC royalty, Clemson, and others at least for this year. And it looks like they are gearing up to set the pace for raising and using NIL funds.

2015 to 2018 we were on top of the world. Whatever it took to get the best players assembled on one roster, Alabama and Clemson really knew how to do it then. Semifinal matches were not competitive. Oklahoma lost to us 37 to 17, Notre Dame lost to us 30 to 3, and well the saying O-31-O came from a 31 to nothing blowout. 2016 and 2018 the semifinal matches were really blowouts due to a serious difference in the talent level on the field. Clemson had the talent. Ohio State and Notre Dame did not. The talent difference we had seemed unsurmountable.

By 2019 Ohio State had caught up to us and LSU had one year lightning in a bottle. Here’s hoping we figure out how to build rosters with overwhelming talent again. Winning at all with a lot of fun!

One of the talk shows I listened to today had a B1G yapper on and basically stated.... the North is back now that you can buy teams. LMAO.

it's largely true...

the large established teams like Ohio State, Michigan etc... that have 60k enrollment and all of those grads giving every year have a definite advantage over a team like us.

Something I imagine will have to happen (players as employees and a salary cap?) or this is going to get all out of whack real quick.

GET out of whack??? Thought we were already there.

A salary cap won't affect NIL.

NIL is t salary and the schools don't pay it.

They finally have enough $$$ to lure kids out of the south that would have never considered leaving before.

The QB that used to be at Duke threw a TD to a player from Clemson. The dude that ran the kick off back was from Temple (?). The kicker was a former Gamecock. I don't believe a single point was scored by anyone ND recruited out of high school.
When you look at it in that light, what Dabo has done to stay competitive, using HS recruits, is downright amazing.

If Harvard or Yale decide they want to be serious like the olden days, their alum base could collectively outbid the billionaires at Oregon and Michigan. Would never happen, but it would be hilarious. Actually, Cal and Stanford could be legit threats if they were serious about football.

Indeed, it would be funny if the Harvard’s and Yale’s of the world made a business decision to strike it big in college football. They definitely have bigger fish to fry, and their alumni really aren’t that interested.
But they could out invest anybody for players and facilities. They could back door demand some pretty hefty TV contracts. If you’ve ever seen the fleet of private jets at the FBO private terminal in Belmont MA or New Haven, depending on where the game is played, $10,000 per seat tickets would just be starting money to make up for the smaller stadiums.

If people could watch Clemson vs Alabama battle it out for four years in the college football playoffs, watching a couple of Ivey’s do it would become the norm soon enough. Hard to imagine televisions turning off in the rural south if college football is being played just because there are new teams on top.
