expectancy ...
essentially makes social security a tax ... instead of a benefit
does she not see that ?
Has she become a swamp creature ?

Social Security IS A TAX!

The Supreme Court said that long ago and is the only way that it is constitutional.
if it is not a tax, then it is per se unconstitutional. full stop.

so make the age for collecting soc security older.
Not sure I agree with that, but either way SS is already an actual tax...so I'm not too sure what the OP is about here.

When the Social Security Act was originally passed, the average life expectancy in the US was 59 for men and 63 for women. Meaning the age at which you could draw Social Security was AFTER the life expectancy (at the time). ALSO, your social security number was never supposed to be used as a form of identification, lol.
It's a tax. Period.

It's a retirment plan for many. Median amount saved
Sep 14, 2023, 3:24 PM
|
|
35-44 $60,000 45-54 $100,000 55-64 $134,000 65-74 $164,000
If you are 50 years old and have $100k saved up you are in trouble but not as much trouble as someone that is 70 with $164k.
Those are median! At 50 you need to have at least 10 times your wage at retirement it needs to be more like 15 times your wage unless you want to sit at home and do nothing.

I think the 15 at retirement is a good goal, but I don’t think it’s a realistic for most. A lot of it depends on your expenses at retirement…I think having no debt is an even better goal…then you can make it just fine on much less. Do both and you’ll be truly living the dream golden years!

how does floating a change to SS in order to try to make it solvent make one a "swamp creature"?
Increasing the retirement/ss benefit age because people are living longer is a pretty rational idea, is it not?
There are 3 options, as far as I can see (with a given that the system should be saved)
(1) gradually increase retirement age (2) increase the tax amount/% (3) decrease the payout/benefit/"return"
Which option do you prefer?

to the best of my knowledge, the T-bills sitting in the account versus cash is not at all the reason for the projected insolvency, right? In fact, the Treasury has to pay back the SSI account with interest.

quite seen how that works (putting aside the moral/political question).
Many like to talk about increasing the SS cap for the wealthy...but the amount one gets at retirement is a function of what one puts in, so putting in more means pulling out more at retirement. So unless, they alter the program on that end too, raising the cap is a band-aid and not a solution.

and the Democrats offered burnt offerings at the altar of FDR?
Bush's plan was to privatize a portion of SS. that plan had problems but made a lot of sense.

This was the "lockbox" thing with Gore, and privatization from Dubya. And of course it didn't go bankrupt.

SS should be tied to a certain time from life expectancy. LE at 90? Eligibility at 75 or something like that.
Also, once all of these boomers die off SS will be much more solvent then it has been.

"Don't pay out until 75 now that people live longer"
But is anyone willing to argue FOR the 120k cap on reported income, or in favor of loopholes that allow Billionaires to get out of paying a proportional amount? We have a handful of families that own 40% of the country's wealth, my guess is they do not pay a dime into the system. It seems an easy fix to keep SS solvent if they paid 6% of their gross income like the rest of us.
I am sure a bunch of you think that is not fair because the poor billionaires will never collect on it.
