Interesting comment by Dave Clausen

He said the difference between this year and last year was recovers were open in both games but Hartman had no time to throw last year, and he had time this year.
Going back to watch the game last year, I noticed we moved a lot more pre-snap on defense disguising our fronts and blitz packages. Our pre-snap movement and shifts were minimal today. We basically gave a great qb and sr o line a predictable day at the office and that allowed them to give Hartman just enough time to be the great player he is.
Did you guys notice this?

Yes absolutely. It made all the difference this year. No pressure up front gave him time to pick apart our very inexperienced secondary. Thank God we got out of there with a win. With our fantastic players upfront WHY was there no pressure against a team like Wake Forest’s offensive line? Big problem

Yes, I noticed for sure. Not many shifts or "games", while the D-Line was rushing the QB...
I hope these young Corners grow up fast, if we aren't going to pressure the opposing QBs enough like Clemson used to.
A game like this one might be just what the Clemson Defense needed to begin to identify it's issues and solve those problems.

Not possible when they are quick snapping the ball. We’re barely getting set by the time they snap.

I feel like the D has regressed. I hate too be negative and I do realize we haven’t been at full strength but schemes are off and I think like you said BV was excellent at disguising our movements and blitz packages. On the flip side, Wr are just dropping balls everywhere. DJ is getting better every week, really happy too see that. I almost feel like Streeter is holding him back.

Last year they pushed the O line backwards and disrupted Wakes running game. This year the D line didn't get as much penetration .

For whatever reason we've played a very vanilla defense this season compared to years past. I had hoped we were keeping some things under wraps until we played better teams but today proves that isn't the case. I guess creating havoc on defense and not allowing QBs to get comfortable throwing the ball are concepts we no longer find beneficial. At least its a lot less complicated though. For us and whoever we are playing.

The reason has to be the coordinator. We have the bodies to cause havoc up front and with trouble out back . . we need it!!!

I know it's a gamble to promote from within, but it'd be a gamble to bring in a new DC and system from outside as well. Of course we're gonna face some learning/growing pains.

not expect to keep the same elite defense we had. We can still be good. And maybe we made the best possible decision. But you don't replace Michael Jordan when he leaves. It's impossible.

How's Kevin Steele working out in Miami? That's a new DC and new scheme for the Canes.

It’s absolutely killing him. And it’s exhausting him too, because it’s a lot more work to create his weird backhanded compliment posts that are defensible when the Tigers are going on the road and beating top-25 teams. Real tightrope act.
Hence a post where he blames Dabo for something that he imagined. That’s the new strategy.

It's the same players, last year they put more pressure on Hartman maybe they changed their scheme to take advantage of over aggressiveness.

Like, it's crazy how some of other posters aren't giving the other team credit too. WF made some plays and adjustments. Watching the 1st Q I thought we might run them out of the stadium by half.
Credit given where it's due. WF is a problem when they have an experienced team and they have super seniors with 5th and 6th year experience.

You nailed the difference in philosophy. Wes says he wants the defense to focus and play free as opposed to all the pre-snap changes.
This is not working and he needs to adjust and quick. If the full year goes the way the last few games have gone Dabo must fire him.
You gonna fire Steele for his horrible year. Wes should be no different. At this point he better be on the 1 year plan if the defensive struggles continue.
Now playing a young secondary is part of that, but once we have a full year of a body of work we can make a decision. He should have adjusted sooner.

Our boys were doing a lot of shifting in the first game but the ref's started throwing flags for delay because of it and they stopped. They haven't done the shifting presnap regularly since. I have a sneaking suspicion Dabo told them to cut that out.

The bottom line was our front 4 just could not whip their o line for some reason. We had times when we did but long periods they killed us. 11 was getting double teamed but others were just not beating their one on one. If I am State this week my first three plays would be bombs to wide outs because if our db's play like yesterday we cannot cover them, but that being said State's wr are not WF.

I think Dave Clausen is the best offensive mind in the ACC (maybe the nation) and gets more out of his talent than any other coach out there.
Personally, I got more out of his post game assessment than anything our coaches said because he spoke to specifics in the scheme and over all approach.
We’ve got another really good QB in Leary thats going to be snapping it with 20 seconds on the play clock and getting that ball out of there quick and climbing the pocket. And they have a legit defense too. So, we better come with a less predictable and more flexible gameplan and scheme next week regardless of the personnel we have available

to have so many defensive starters out.
Regardless, we are not using the exotic blitzes and disguises that we did under BV.

We called off the blitzes because Hartman was picking us apart in multiple areas. Then Wake ran that slow play running style where the back just sits in the backfield until a hole opens, knowing the LBs were in coverage.
Frustrating to watch for sure. I do think Wes needs to change things up some and disguise things but getting our starters back in the secondary will make a huge difference. NC State got a ton of eye candy on Saturday. Lots of work to do this week.
Clausen is a great coach. He got the best of us Saturday but we still won on the road.

We would be in desperate need for the D to get better while the O is looking like a real top 10 offense.
No turnovers was a big deal.

Couple random thoughts
Dave Clawson is a really good coach.
I’ve done the math and I found that sixth year QBs have five more years of college football experience than freshman CBs.
I didn't like our defensive line’s game plan against the slow mesh. But Goodwin learned some things and we hopefully don’t see the slow mesh again this year.
BTW, Dave Clawson is a really good coach.
