TNET: ACC commissioner says he expects football to be played despite recent outbreaks

ACC commissioner says he expects football to be played despite recent outbreaks

ACC Commissioner John Swofford said that recent virus outbreaks across the ACC haven't deterred the conference from planning to play football this fall. (Photo: Usat / USATODAY) Full Story »

huevos to not overreact when outbreaks happen and cancel it all. You can't tell me the players aren't safer on campus with full access to all the testing they could ever need and personal physician attention than they would be trying to get the same in small towns back home. I hope swofford and the like mean what they say when they acknowledge that we KNEW cases would happen when kids show up but that that is not a reason to not play. I'm sure he means it. But he meant it when he said we'd definitely play FSU in hoops back in March. There are no guarantees

hope they have good advisors about how to deal with outbreaks and have high tolerance for pushing train forward.

If we play football this fall, I will have newfound respect for swofford. If we get to attend games, I’ll stop booing him every time he is introduced.

Well I wish I could but the nepotism and ACC network delay, girdle gate, and hand holding of UNC through academic fraud are it for me. the sooner he is towed away the better.

Aug 22, 2020, 9:55 AM

football is delusional. However, I would wager that the percentage of football cases will be LOWER than the public at large, due to the strict precautions being taken. This is the argument that the coaches and the athletes themselves are making to allow the season to go forward. I sincerely hope they are proven right. I think that we are holding onto college football so hard because having it means we have not fallen completely down the rabbit hole. Go Ask Alice.

Another Swoff "wishy-washy" message. Just like the "medical experts". I haven't heard a consistant analysis since this started. And what has happened to those players that tested positive? Did they become bed ridden, end up in the hospital, or even worse die ? It seems that for this young age group it is lie the flu, you don't feel well, do what you need to do until feeling better. But we want to shut down the world. Swoff is as bad as the medical advice that is all over the place.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The medical advice hasn’t been all over the place.

Aug 22, 2020, 10:58 AM

It’s been very consistent throughout most of the pandemic. The problem is that many people just don’t want to hear it, because it means they might have to do horrible things like wear a mask and wash their hands. Or (gasp!) not have football this year.

It’s strange how people only trust experts if they are saying what they want to hear. Ironically, if the experts’ advice had been followed more closely, we would be in a much better place now and the football season very likely wouldn’t be in jeopardy.

masks work is far from consistent...even flip flop fauxie admitted to lying about masks in the beginning...also you mention following advice more closely places who had very strict lock downs and mask mandates still had massive spikes see california and the other northern states.

one or two covid cases pop up, then don't waste everybody's time with trying to play. Even if there is an outbreak, which very easily could happen. Surely they aren't that stupid. They must have a contingency plan in place for when that does happen.

I agree, I think there is little or no doubt that players in the season have a much lower risk of getting it than the general student population- they have much more incentive than a normal student so you hope will have the maturity to do the right things. But keep in mind the inconsistency is NOT from the medical folks - they know what the virus is, how it spreads and how it does or does not affect people. What is not clear yet is why one person is affected one way and another way. The inconsistency lies in the interpretation and tolerance level of risk. If one person in 1000 gets permanent heart problems is that OK? What about 1 in 100 or 1 in 10? That decision is made by lawyers and administrators with advice from public health folks. I've tried to reach "Pack" a few times on this since he and many others keep referring to the doctors not being able to agree. That's not true its purely a legal interpretation of risk tolerance and liability. We all make these decisions many times each day - some folks follow the odds and others don't. Do you know anyone who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day but won't get on an airplane? Makes no sense right.

Great Caesar's Ghost, move it to the Spring !

Aug 22, 2020, 10:51 AM

I don't know how they can be so brain dead stupid. Look, a vaccine might be here as early as this October, certainly be end of year. What are they gonna do, a couple hold-out Conferences are gonna play in mostly empty stadiums then at the end, they will argue which team was the best ? Its gonna be like a glorified sand-lot game and no ones gonna care.

Do it in Spring, start about Feb 1. By that time a lot of people will be immune to the plague, you can play a regular season of Football, in front of fans. Only diff is that the playoffs will be in May, Early June, so what.

And, people will care.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And what, play 20 games in a year?

Aug 22, 2020, 11:08 AM

Virginia, Mid-west in February?

Most of the best players would skip and prepare for the draft.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, and no "best players" would not skip

Aug 22, 2020, 11:37 AM

They have to show 'em what they got, else they not going to get as much dinero

Re: Great Caesar's Ghost, move it to the Spring !

Aug 22, 2020, 12:34 PM [ in reply to Great Caesar's Ghost, move it to the Spring ! ]

I could live with spring but who knows when we could start - will it be better or worse with the next winter surge. Vaccine won't be much help - taking the most optimistic look and sayings we have one by years end, it will take 3-4 months, best case scenario, to get it produced and delivered and develop enough immunity out there - and then there are a significant number who have said they won't take the vaccine so they will screw its effectiveness up for all.
The other two basic problems are the draft (already discussed and yes folks would just have to make a decision to stay or move on) and the other spring and winter sports (can you imagine a May-June with NCAA Final 4, Baseball WS AND football playoffs!). We would at least make up for lost time on something to watch but it would lead to many logistical problems to be resolved.
Last are the health concerns in playing 2 seasons in less than a calendar year!
We'll take what we can get at this time though I guess!

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Logistical Problems ?

Aug 22, 2020, 3:42 PM

Its a good problem to have, Football, Baseball, Basketball all playing overlapping at same time. The local economy will certainly like it !

As for vaccine, they are going to have a 100M doses right off the bat. If people decide not to take it and they get sick, that's their problem (they have been warned, sorry for being cruel).

By February, most people who want the vaccine will have the vaccine.

As for draft, so what. They can draft in late June.

As for number of games, thing ends in June (if in playoff), they get 6-7 weeks off, and start all over again. The actual time on field is probably LESS. After all, no Fall Season, and the Spring is when they are doing Spring Practice anyway.

I do not see the big deal.

You will not see a vaccine available for everyone in a year, or more. The FDA doesn’t work that way. Our best hope is that a suitable vaccine has already been developed and is now going through the long testing period.

Eff the Big 10 and Pac 12. They're making their decision under pressure from Blue state idiots that have been cheering on the death count and increased unemployment numbers as soon as they realized it could impact the election. The going with the - more misery we can create, the worse it is for the Orange Man- strategy. They blah-blah about players safety yet the BiG10 Commissioner's own son is still going to toplay for Mississippi State. I'll pass on joining a group of such transparent hypocrites in the spring and stick with our Duke-led medical board and Fall football. 90% of the CFB fans will "care" as will most of the OSU, PSU Nebraska and Michigan fans. I actually almost feel sorry for Justin Fields in all of this.

I have just about as much confidence in Swoffie doing a good job with this as I have in the accuracy of the mailed in ballots and the confidence I have that the Post office will be able to handle the timely delivery of mail in ballots. I predict a major "Cluster----", to borrow a line from a Clint Eastwood movie.

MASKS DONT WORK

Aug 22, 2020, 6:07 PM

That’s why doctors have been wearing them for a hundred years! Why can’t you experts understand that?

I think Swofford has done a good job handling this impossible situation.
