Let's settle this debate. Fireworks vs. Dogs.

As a property-paying homeowner, do I have a right to get peeved with people shooting off fireworks in violation of local ordinances (i.e. past quiet hours) and the impact that has on my animals or am I an unpatriotic stick in the mud who hates life and having fun?
I'm always interested in the responses on this question. I would like to identify the people older than 8 years old who can't have fun without shooting fireworks. I need to know who you are.

But, its the Fourth of July. Fire those bottle rockets. My dog acan deal with it for a day.
I get more irritated by people who are still shooting them off three days later.

On July 4 and January 1, up until midnight, people should have free rein to smoke Terry. Outside of that, I'll find you and murder you.

You have two days a year to shoot them off as much as you want with no repercussions. Also I do give my dog Trazadone and it knocks her out

One more reason I loved living on IOP.

Fireworks are illegal. I wish Mt P would adopt that ordinance. Maybe the cops could shift their efforts from GOLF CART AND ELECTRIC BICYCLE CRIMES to that.
Even with that I used to hear the NC tourons light off a gross of firecrackers at 1 am after getting kicked out of the Dinghy.
I doubt the IOP cops, as petty as they are, would even go after someone for doing that once...but I'd be interested in seeing what the fines would look like if they DID get caught.

and bought our little dog one of those Thundershirts back in the day. It helped a lot, but still gave meds as needed. She got through it just fine, just like those anxiety-attack-inducing trips to the vet and groomer and kennel. Bless her sweet heart. I cried like a baby when she passed. Still, I never had the raging audacity to expect, much less demand that other people give up a long standing tradition intended to honor and celebrate our great nation's independence and the freedoms that entails. I love every pop, bang, and boom!

who lived in Indiana, where fireworks were illegal. His grandma lived next door to us, and he would visit for 2 weeks every summer. He could not wait to get here and shoot fireworks. We spent almost every day and night shooting big strings of firecrackers, bottle rockets, whistling chasers, M80s and any other exploding firework we could get our hands on. I lived in a rural neighborhood surrounded on all 4 sides by houses with houses on all sides of them. Everybody had cats and dogs. I had a dog and a pony and my next door neighbor on one side had 2 ponies.
We shot firewroks almost non-stop for those two weeks. Sometimes neighbors would even come out in the evening and watch our fireworks show. This was usually not the week of the 4th.
Not a single neighbor ever complained. Not once. Never a word about pets getting freaked out. That was in the late 1960s-mid 1970s.
People and their expectations sure have changed.

and finding them out wandering around the next morning bleeding from the barbed wire fence they ran through because of the fireworks. Or finding your neighbor's horse in your yard with same type injuries.
I've spent so many July 4ths and NYEs out in the barn hanging out with my animals I have lost count. Dogs, it does suck for some of them (and some don't care one bit) but you can put in the bedroom or bathroom for a couple hours. Pasture animals not so much.
Like others, I'm fine with those two nights a year, resigned to that fact of life. It's when they shoot them every night for a week straight that distresses me.
