All the crying about athletes being paid and getting their cut of the HUGE financial pie is exhausting. If you don't like college sports and where they're headed, stop watching. They'll be just fine without you.

I think much of the complaining is related to the lack of regulation.

It's currently the wild west, with little to no guidelines or oversight regarding athlete compensation.
I used to be against any athlete payment, based on the huge value associated with a full scholarship, health insurance, training, expert coaching, free housing, etc. Then I started to think more about how much money is involved in college football, and how much money it makes for schools, and then I came to the realization that athletes deserve a greater slice of the pie.
However, what we have now seems excessive. While I am all for free markets and capitalism, something seems off when a top player who is still technically an amateur is getting millions of dollars. It's one thing if it is an endorsement deal, but another thing entirely when that money is used to recruit (and in some instances, mislead) a player.
What gets lost in all of this is the academic part of things. The student part of student-athlete is becoming more and more de-emphasized, making even more of a joke of the concept of college athletics. That's sad to me, but I don't see how we can make it better unless we completely separate academics from athletics. That would obviously have consequences that wouldn't be good.

And they are currently still getting exploited. If the house settlement falls through, college football is dead for most universities. Very few booster organizations can keep up with this train wreck.

for acceptance into these institutions for higher learning .
make the exploited students have to care about academics in high school the same way non exploited students have to.
Then have tryouts for the sports teams to see which STUDENTS are good enough to play sports for the university.

as regular students, evaluated for their academic excellence without regard for their athletic skills, many FBS college rosters would look much different (including ours).
It's not that these guys aren't capable of maintaining a 2.0. Most do. The issue is that most would not come close to being accepted at their current schools, nor would they be able to graduate if not for dumbed-down majors, extra tutoring, and even testing accommodations.

I have always felt that it makes a mockery of higher education to claim academic excellence while admitting athletes who would not be accepted into school otherwise. This, plus dumbed-down "jock majors" as well as special tutors and testing accommodations make the whole idea of student-athletes at major division I programs a joke.
Of course, this will never happen, because athletics are major money makers for universities and athletic success is important for alums and fan. But adopting a division III model would be a great first step in restoring some academic integrity at these universities.

I think its a true statement that given how competitive Clemson has become, if we are looking at grades and test scores only, yes our team would look very different. Thats not a slap at our guys, but more of a nod to how competitive Clemson has become academically.
That said, I would be ok if academic standards were the general rule on acceptance. That was one of the good things about the ACC. Not to be a snob, but we did have conference standards as well. I think that was the whole thing about limited partial qualifiers etc.
But regardless, Money/ No Money, Grades/ No Grades it comes down to a simple thing. If we are all playing by the same set of rules, everyone is pretty content. Right now, there is a feeling like there are no rules, except the Golden Rule. He who has the Gold Wins. And that is frustrating.
I think over time the money issues will settle down. If it gets to expensive, or if a team is not competitive, people will stop coming/ and watching. Thats when adjustments will be made.

If you think about it, isn't this the same kind of thing that happened in the Olympics (which was the ultimate in amateur sports at one time) and now we even have pro athletes participating, i.e. basketball, golf, tennis, etc.
Couple that with men now playing in women's sports as women. Just a changing of the times and now we have to accept the new realities...

I don't begrudge the players making money at all. They are ultimately the reason we consume the product. It is just that the current constructs of player payments within the guise of NIL is a charade, much like the notion of college football student athlete. Drop the whole NIL facade, and pay the players based upon their perceived and real value to a team, just like the NFL. Then regulate it just like the NFL with salary caps and a draft. Otherwise just call it the best team money can by league.

They are currently not getting their cut of the huge financial pie. Please quit trying to blur the two issues. Right now, boosters are being shaken down for the money. Until the house settlement is implemented, we the boosters can complain all we want because we are the ones that are paying for their scholarships and perks.

But I am about to that point. I increased my IPTAY level this year to maintain my parking. I am currently treading water for the next two years to see how this all shakes out. Understand if I walk, Clemson football is in trouble. Not from my donation but because I know other boosters will be fed up too and will also walk.
For the time being, it would be nice if Clemson just announced the players like Cade that are not entering the draft and quit posting the other social media “signed” things. We all know what is occurring behind the scenes. We just don’t need it thrown in our faces all of the time.
Remember IPTAY was developed on the backs of blue collar workers donating $10 a year. A lot of our fans have never set foot in a Clemson classroom but, love the Tigers. Others, like myself, had to work jobs and take out loans to attend Clemson. That is why it is so degrading to see the scholarships that IPTAY provides being treated as an unappreciated afterthought.
That is my soap box for today. Going to start cooking for tonight. Happy New Year and stay safe.

Well said. The saddest part is how involved parents have become in making sure their kid gets their fair share of all the money being given to these greedy immature parents and kids.
When these athletes hit their 30’s I wonder where they will be ? Some will be broke, some unemployed, some in prison, some successful. IMO I see to many negative outcomes for these kids.

I basically have stopped watching college sports aka pay for play ! This just the beginning of this greedy pay for play disaster. It want be to many years before the players get their union, pension plans and they will continue to demand more.
As college football is in chaos and destruction mode, your post is disappointing supporting NIL and the large sums of money headed the players way. It sad that education and character are no longer important to many players or recruits.
I will be surprised if Dabo stays at Clemson and coaching through his current contract. If he signs an extension it is for recruiting and to maintain Clemson’s current Culture.
When Clemson loses Dabo Tiger football will never be the same. Maybe then supporters of pay for play may feel different about their support for NIL and revenue sharing.
