Deacon Jones of the Fearsome Foursome could just about bust a guys eardrum with a head slap upside his helmet. Dat be a penalty now. Deacon was my favorite player growing up, I even rode the bench in high school wearing his number 75.

I like the modern game better.

I know too many guys who can vividly recall the game in
which they got a concussion in the first half and then played but do not recall anything about
the second half. I know a few guys who played for Clemson and yet directed their sons to a different sport because of the dangers of old style football. And I knew too many who played football and died early or could not play anything later in life because of football injuries.

The game is physical enough as is.

Harley, you brought back a Clemson football memory with your post about playing and not remembering. I was a QB at Clemson back in the dark ages, when we called our own plays and ran the offense. During one spring scrimmage in the Valley which was filmed for later study by the coaches, I scrambled out of a pass play and ran down the left sideline and met one of our DB's helmet to helmet, which in those old Riddell suspension helmets meant the top of the heads slammed against each other.

I hopped right up and called the next plays and took us on into the end zone for a TD a few plays later. As we sat on the bench after that series, one of the players went over to trainer Doc Hoover and told him you need to go check on this dude, he is talking crazy stuff and making no sense. Turns out, I had a concussion and spent a couple nights in the infirmary.

The weird part of it was the following week, sitting in film study, watching yourself play and having no memory of it at all. It was like watching someone else play. How in the world could the brain be injured yet operate at a high enough level to call and run plays? It was really weird!

Crazy and scary story Wild Hogg. I bet that was a weird feeling watching film with no memory of it.

The violence and physical play is surely missed by me and many old school fans. How about Bubba Brown, Jeff Davis, Levon Kirkland, the Fridge and more breaking QB's (e.g. Major Harris) back in the day? Those Danny Ford Defenses were on a level that does not exist today.

Football is becoming more and more of a speed game and migrating more and more to a flag football mindset favoring the Offense.

Kirkland , Ed McDaniel, and Wayne Simmons all played LB together during that era.

They all went on to great careers in the NFL

We were then often referred to as LBU.

With the offensive philosophy of " 3 yards and a cloud of dust " you best have an dominant defense and we did.

My grandson and I were watching an old 1970 playoff game, between Dallas and Detroit on youtube. Detroit had the ball and ran a sweep play, that ran into about half the Cowboy defense. As the Lion running back was tackled, his helmet was knocked about twenty five yards downfield. After the play, everyone went back to the game as if nothing happened. My grandson, asked; shouldn't that have been a penalty? I replied the only way it was a penalty back then, was if his head was still in the helmet. That was football.
I haven't watched much pro ball in quite a few years, but I noticed a probowl commercial for a flag football all star game. Chuck Bednarik is rolling over in his grave.

I do miss that era of NFL football. I am a long suffering Viking fan. Grew up watching the Purple People Eaters. Allan Page, Gary Larsen, Carl Ellet and Jim Marshall.

I remember years ago, watching Minnesota play Detroit on Thanksgiving day. It was like blizzard conditions. The Vikings were in all white, and you could barely make the players out, in the snowstorm. Whenever the Detroit QB (Landry, I think), would drop back to pass, it was as if he would disappear under their pass rush. You could see him setting up to pass and all of a sudden he was gone. I'm not a fan of either team, but that was a fun game to watch.

obviously due to the defense. Your Vikings broke my heart in that snowy playoff game when they kept my Rams out of that Super Bowl that you lost to the Chiefs, SB IV. My AFL team was of course the Jets, who had pulled off the upset that led to the NFL merger, SB III.

Man, that was a long time ago.

The Fearsome Foursome. Cowboys had the Doomsday Defense. Vikings had the Purple People Eaters. The Bears were the Monsters of the Midway. The Steelers had the Steel Curtain. The Dolphins had the No Name Defense. The Packers of the '60s were The Pack. The Jets of the '80s had the Sack Exchange. Giants were Big Blue. Did I miss any?
