In rural, upstate South Carolina, it is ok to be a little bit redneck.

We aren't taken seriously because people put a p in Clemson? As long as people don't put p in the streets of downtown Greenville, I can accept it.

No its not. When you say Clemson............

It is Clem
and
Son.
Nothing about Son sounds like a Z.
Say Clem and then say Son. When not pronouncing the S like a Z, it naturally sounds like Clemson with a P, at least a little. Right? Proper pronunciation is not a redneck thing.

You'd have to figure since it's a proper name like "Dabo," that those who knew him personally pronounced correct. Add to that the fact that phonetics was not taught in most southern schools until after I was in high school the few who could read had probably heard the name spoken as children. It's seems therefor, natural that the locals would be the absolute reference for an accurate pronunciation.
It's not relative to what yankee, midwesterners and the rest think, it's relative to us.
In natural speech pronouncing the 'M.' brings one's lips together thus making the P sound as the mouth and lips make the transition to the 'S,' sound.

At least that's what I remember when I was there. I'm also not sure that P&B's is actually still around unless it moved. Had my graduation dinner there on 2001. Kinda sad if they shut it down.

Both are still open and owned/operated by the Corontzes family. Great people and two fine establishments. I frequent both when I am in town. They actually had a third called Rudy's on Ram Cat in downtown Seneca but it closed 2 or 3 years ago.

Coolest post ever. To read it here first and then to show the napkin on national television was just awesome. I don't know how many times over the years I have yelled at the tv correcting a commentator on how he or she mispronounced CLEMSON. Way to go sir.

You sir are a man of reason. Points to you for taking up for the meek. The mild. The MAN who got in someone's ear about OUR CLEMSON.
Re listen to the broadcast. I have never heard a professional pronounce CLEMpSON so eloquently from start to finish. I did my part. I will sleep well.
Thank you to all others who take pride and leave a mark for our University.
