LET'S PUT THIS MATTER TO REST ABOUT DABO....

|

I rarely weigh in on these matters, but the attempts by certain posters to denigrate Dabo Swinney have gone far enough, for those who continue to label him as a bad coach know very little about leadership.
A good leader doesn't have to be a great coach...or general...or CEO. He has to have the ability to choose superior subordinate leaders to execute the grand strategy of the organization, then the ability to push those subordinates relentlessly to excellance. I have posted the example of Dwight Eisenhower's leadership role previously.
Eisenhower was never considered a great combat general. George Patton won the kudos for that. But Ike had the flair for choosing great subordinate leaders, all of whom contributed to the allied European victory. Occasionally, he had to replace some of those leaders; however, overall his management of his subordinates, including the allied commanders produced the grand result.
I don't regard Dabo as a great offensive or defensive coach, and frankly, I don't care if he is. I do care that he continues to have the foresight to select excellent subordinates, then push them toward excellance. I care that he continuously motivates his staff and team by whatever method he chooses. I care that he continues to motivate the team members. And I most certainly care that he replaces his subordinates when the need arises.
Has he been perfect? No. Has he made poor choices? Yes. Has he relentlessly pushed his staff and team toward excellance? Yes. Am I confident of his ability to motivate himself to push himself toward excellance? Yes.
That being said, I remain convinced that the final verdict is out regarding his leadership. He is making progress; he has achieved noteworthy goals. But most of all, by God, he has given the Clemson Nation a reason to stand cheering in the aisles...to honestly believe in our ability to attain great success on the gridiron...and to once again sing proudly that old refrain..."Where the Tigers reign supreme alway."
Am I a "pumper?" Yes, by God, I am...I've been one since the first days I entered Clemson in 1965. I spent countless hours in pep rallies and on the sidelines, home and away, yelling in exhortation of our fans to cheer on the Tigers. I learned something about motivation. And while I temper overt enthusiasm, I do want Dabo to be successful...AND I AM D@MN PROUD THAT HE IS OUR COACH!
AND I PUT MY NAME WHERE MY WORDS ARE:

Agree with your assessment of Ike's leadership in WWII.... he did a masterful job as a CEO/manager. However, as president, he was often callous, indifferent, and very indecisive on important policy matters. He was not at his best in the White House!

program the way he wants to, however, I do not think he should be given a pass on anything. He has now lost four in a row to SC and is time for that issue to be confronted. I don't care how many ACC championships he wins. He needs to beat South Carolina now.

despise losing to SC. I have no doubts that Dabo understands that and knows that he has to muster the capability to end that little streak ASAP. Frank Howard faced the same challenge (along with grads and fans ready to riot) after his four-in-a-row loss to SC in the early 50's. He found the answer...and won the next three. That's a hurdle that Dabo has to cross...and no doubt, he hears it every day.

While beating the coots is always important, it certainly is not the most important goal for our program. I do believe some on here would be happy to beat usuc and lose all the other games. That is giving the coots way more credibility than they deserve, IMO.

Clemson's dropping the cadet corps and going coed had a lot more to do with it than figuring out how to beat a coach (Rex Enright) who owned him.
Howard once said that when Clemson had the military requirement, he had to post an assistant coach at the bus station, rr depot and the highways leading out of town.

Peanut,
What you have to understand about the South Carolina series is this: When Dabo took over, the arrow was straight up on a Gamecock program with a NC seasoned veteran highly accomplished head coach at the helm (WITH A 4 YEAR HEAD START), while the arrow was straight down for a Tiger program with a young head coach just starting his career at the helm. Add to that the Gamecocks in the last 4 years have enjoyed the most successful 4 year run by far in the history of Gamecock football.
When I hear people say Dabo's not a good coach in the face of his body of work to date,I totally lose it. A Gamecock fan told me recently, "It's a good thing Dabo is a good recruiter and hires good coaches because he is not a good coach himself." When I quit laughing, I explained to him that he just named two attributes of a good head man...stopped him dead in his tracks.
There is not one head coach in the history of the game that achieved high performance levels w/o good recruiting and good assistants, NOT ONE!!
OUT.

I told friends that it wasn't a matter of "if," but "when" he would achieve a certain level of success. Admittedly, he and Ray Tanner have worked wonders with their respective programs. However, I do not believe the two programs have been upended permanently. I expect the rivalry to remain fierce, and I expect Clemson to win its share of the competition.

this year, he will have lost five in a row and when he does that he has pretty well proven that the can not beat them and will not win a national championship with a loss to that sorry bunch. Call me crazy if you want to but I had rather beat the Coots, this year. than to go 11 and 1 and have another loss to them. I hate that bunch with a passion.

There was also an opinion piece written recently and posted on the Bleacher report site that Dabo was one of the top up and coming young coaches in the country.

thread on TNet today included repetitious attacks on Dabo, which have been aired over and over. Up to now I've chosen to avoid those brawls; however, like many other loyal Clemson grads and fans, I've grown weary of the lurkers and posters with their own agendas, who constantly condemn Dabo. I would suggest you reread your own response, for that's what I consider an attempt to pick a fight...and I do, however, say that with respect to you and acknowledge your right to say it.

I believe most folks who have some sense of reason think these are pretty good times right now for Clemson. We are winning a bunch of games, staying within the rules, graduating our players, have a team of players and coaches with a high level of character and maturity, and we are improving our program and our depth each year. I think most should rethink their negative opinions. While scar has elevated their program to heights never reached in their rather uneventful history, they still haven't won much more than a few state championships against a program that was very down most of that time, but they did win some nice 5th place rings in their conference. Is that how we want to measure our success? Really?

You are one of the most astute & spirited Clemson Men I've ever known (from afar) and I really like your spirit. Of course, you were a male cheerleader (like the Leader of the Cheering Squad) and a sports writer for The TIGER, later being the Sports Editor..and later the Editor in Chief of the entire The TIGER student newspaper..so that puts you right in the forefront of being one of the best Clemson has ever seen.
You rock Harry, and thanks for your being such a great Tiger over the years!

You are all over this one, and I would bet that Dabo will be a very highly sought after Head Coach who will be pursued by many big named programs before it's over. I just hope he loves us, and we all love him, enough to keep him. Also, I hope those who have constantly disparaged him the whole time will just become fans of another team.

That is the way it seems, but I do know that some of them call themselves Clemson fans. I call them "pseudo" fans.

My man! Great post. He has once again made Clemson relevant in the national picture but yet there are idiots out there that disagree. We will start this season in the top ten because of his leadership. You are 100% correct buddy. Thanks.

Exactly. If Gettysburg taught the world anything, it was
May 6, 2013, 8:54 AM

that Lee absolutely blew as a military strategist. His genius was in administration, and in picking subordinates who were absolutely brilliant at their jobs. Granted, at the time the South was filled with younger sons who'd gone off to West Point because of primogeniture, so there was an abundance of talent to choose from, but the whole idea behind going to Gettysburg was just stupid beyond belief, and the decision to go there rests on Lee. Dabo has successfully avoided having his Gettysburg moment so far.

No question whatsoever that more of the total population of the state of South Carolina is estatic over Dabo Swinney being Clemson's football coach than any of his predecessors!

than most would realize, given the larger number of Clemson grads and fans along with the greater population than existed 30 years ago, when Danny was at the helm. Whether or not they are in states of ecstasy can only be answered by those folks themselves.

Also, many more of Tiger games are televised with each new season, as compared to maybe two or three per year in Danny's or Coach Howard's eras. Add in the instant access to sports coverage via internet etc., and Dabo is seen and heard in the media more in one season than the aforementioned coaches were in perhaps 10 years.

Sorry Sir...I respectfully disagree.

Dabo has beaten up on a bad conference and won one big game (LSU). He is 1-4 against South Carolina and 2-3 in bowl games.
It is certainly a half full/empty scenario. In my opinion, Dabo hasn't put it all together...yet. I was pleasantly shocked after the LSU game, but one win doesn't make a coach.
But in response to your thoughts on leadership, Dabo has yet to prove he is a good leader. He brought in Chad Morris who will leave soon. When that happens, we'll see what Dabo is made of.

I'm fairly certain that the vast majority of the gamecock nation would vote that we keep Dabo for a long, long time.

offer your opinion on a thread that has been generally receptive of my points, and because you offer valid thoughts that I have had. I ask myself a simple question: Would I yield the wins, the excitement and expectations that Dabo has created, given the mistakes and disappointments? The answer? No. Thus, I can only hope to see further progress with victories over those we should defeat, as well as victories over more quality opponents, including the Gamecocks. A key point in my OP was that I believe the final verdict on Dabo's tenure has yet to be rendered; however, I sense a trend toward the type of quality that we all desire, and until proven otherwise, I will support Dabo.
