while still recognizing how cray it is that that same types complain about the halftime show anytime it's not a rock band full of 75-year olds up there groaning around.

When was the last rock band? About a decade and a half ago? It doesn't really matter to me. I don't watch very much NFL anyway. The rules are such now that the game is pretty boring, so it seemed like a fitting halftime show considering the overall product.

Do you consider Maroon 5 or Coldplay rock bands? Those were 2019 and 2016.

The Who was 2010. They shifted directions with halftime shows starting in 2011, I guess.
Before that it was Bruce, Tom Petty, Prince, Stones, and McCartney

I don't think I've ever heard a live band play Coldplay before.
I also just learned that song is 23 years old.

That sounds about right, age wise. I liked Coldplay when I first heard them, then I realized every song sounded exactly the same.

Argument that the only reason people dislike last night is because it was a black artist.
The sheer talent gap between Prince’s show and what we saw last night is ocean-sized.

"You didn't like something because it was...fill in the race," is such an intellectually lazy argument at this point that I don't even try to counter it. I mainly feel pity for people trying to make it.

I fell asleep and missed the halftime show. Prior to the game, son-of was telling me that while he liked Kendrick Lamar, he wasn't sure if the halftime show of the Super Bowl (not sure why I capitalized that) was his thing. He said he mainly drops his stuff, a lot of times unannounced and you have to find it. Large venue performances like that may not be for him. He (a millennial) said that this show requires a much bigger name and broader audience.
I'm not entirely sure who that would be these days. Those that have already done it and those that have already refused to do it.

Super Bowl p.iss break time slot was a far cry from some of their other "pop" half-time shows like Michael Jackson, Prince, or even Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
For at least half (probably way more than half) of the audience - the lyrics (if that is even what they call Lamar's rapid mumbling into the mic) was completely unintelligible. Ignoring the overall like/dislike of rap music - if one can't even make out the "rap" being spoken then what's the point??

About how Kendrick has a huge year because of a diss track, then won the Grammy for best song with said diss track, then performed it at the Superbowl.
The performance was unremarkable. The story makes it the best diss track of all time.

And I thought the performance was terrible. Awful audio. Very boring presentation. It only worked as an inside joke, and not many people in the viewing audience were in on that.

To his credit, he says a whole lot of words real fast and probably can't get too winded or else it all falls apart. Idk if there are stats, but I bet he had the most words per minute of any SB performance.

that people didn't seem to like it. I'm an over-50 white guy and was really impressed with everything---his live performance (minus the recorded backing vocals), Samuel Jackson as ringmaster, and the choreography and camera work were timed really well.
What are people nitpicking, exactly? I liked it better than Usher last year, even though I thought he did a great job, too.
I love rock, but the genre is on life support.

it seems so forced these days. Performer tries to work in 30 minutes of show into 10 minutes and it turns out rushed and not up to standard.
Plus, there's not that many A-list artists even out there any more. The era of the big stadium concert tours is over. There used to be dozens of massive big-name tours every summer. How many people can fill a stadium any more? Taylor Swift and.....?
It was great while it lasted but seems it's time to turn the page and find something else for halftime entertainment.
