Nope. The closest beach south of that I have been is Isle of Palms and the closest beach north of it I have been is Carolina Beach. I don't know that middle beach area.

I miss it as a tradition. But the place has become overbuilt and overcrowded.

It’s totally changed. Both OIB and Sunset used to be made up of rather modest family beach houses.
Brunswick County has exploded. I spent a lot of time there in the 60’s to very early 80’s. It’s hardly recognizable now, but it’s fine.
My grandfather made a critically bad move shortly after Hurricane Hazel buried the road to OIB under several feet of sand. He sold a bunch of front beach lots at a price that would make the Indians that sold Manhattan look brilliant.
My uncle did build a home and I have fond memories of a slow paced beach.
It’s worth a look.

Yeah, it has changed, but they are still the most "residential" beach towns

with VERY FEW hotels. I just hate the old 4BR single story houses are all going away in favor of 8BR mcManions that rent for $10k per week.
Brunswick Beaches will always be my favorite, in order...
1. Sunset 2a. Caswell 2b. Oak 3. OIB 4. Holden

there are tons of house rentals and stuff to do. If you are looking in the same area for a more laid-back beach with less rental houses, check out Sunset Beach. Also, Oak Island is right there as well, which is the beach we prefer. So is Holden, but for some reason I have only stayed on Holden once.
All four are South facing beaches so the waves are not really surfable and the Atlantic can be really calm out there. All three are VERY family friendly, tents are allowed but there may be newer restrictions. All three have significant turtle populations, so fill in holes on the beach, no tents left overnight, etc. Lights out after sunset, can distract momma turtles from laying eggs and can distract babies when they hatch.
Sunset has no grocery store on the island (unless that has changed in the last couple years) but the draw bridge has been gone for a while and it is easier to get off and on the island. Our family went here every summer for 10-15 years. We used to get a house on the canals and walk to the beach, plenty of public accesses if you choose that route.
Oak Island has two grocery stores, some restaurants, bars, shopping, etc. Family goes here now, closer to Wilmington. Renting beach front this summer with another family, should be a banger. Some mid-priced rentals available and some HIGH priced ones.
Ocean Isle has attractions on the island as well as all the other amenities you need. I do not think there is a grocery store on the island though, which is weird. It's like Sunset, but twice the size.

do your in-laws bring an RV and park it in your driveway when they come on vacation ?

lulz at alot of logistics with this question

1. Inlaws don't have an RV, they do have a mobile home, but it isn't actually mobile. They do, however, come and visit and instead sleep in my downstairs bedroom, kids' bedrooms, etc so they do not get a hotel room. They also eat my food and drink my drinks.
2. An RV wouldn't fit in my driveway. New neighborhoods maximize the house on the lot so I think my driveway MIGHT be 20' from garage face to the back of sidewalk.

Ohhhh, was this in reference to where I said FAMILY visited these beaches?

Cause that is my Mom and Dad with me and my brothers when I was little and my current family. Paying to go on vacation with my wife's family is a non-starter from both of us.
First off, we'd have to pay for the whole thing, nope. Second, they would drive us batshit crazy real fast and ruin the vacation for us.

worse. But if you wanna try, go for it. In all my years at Brunswick Beaches, I can count on one hand the number of times I have seen people successfully surfing. One occasional wave, sure.
