Because of THIS:
Clemson is the only team in the nation to have beaten three teams currently ranked in the Top 25 – Louisville (5th), Florida State (19th) and Auburn (11th), something that should catapult Clemson ahead of Michigan.
Strength of schedule also plays a part, and the Tigers have the highest strength of schedule in the nation with a rating of 11.1. Alabama is fourth, Michigan is 19th and Washington is 38th. The Huskies have played just one team currently ranked in the Top 25, defeating 16th-ranked Utah last Saturday.
Clemson also has three wins versus ESPN’s FPI top 10 teams. Under the Football Power Index, Louisville is third, Auburn is sixth and Florida St. is tenth. No other school has more than one.
How can we NOT be #1?!?!?!?

There is another factor. Clemson #1, Alabama #2, Michigan #3, Washington #4, Louisville #5. The committee will hope that Washington falters, and then you will have a matchup of Clemson #1 vs #4 Louisville. Alabama would have the easier of the playoff games (last year, they bumped MSU ahead of Oklahoma to set up the easiest of the two games for Bama. The committee would HATE to see TWO ACC teams in the Championship Game. That just wouldn't do.

Even if they put OSU ahead of Louisville, it's a given Mich/OSU will have a loss and Louisville 'moves up' IF Washington falters...bad (still don't think a one loss non conf champ gets in over a one loss conf champ).
But I DO agree the committee will 'tweak' the standings to set 'matchups'.

However, Bama will still be #1, cuz, you know SEC! Meechegan will probably still be at 2, and I could even see Wash goin in at 3 and us at 4, cuz you know, eSECpn

Consider that ALL of our close games have been due to self inflicted errors!
We are also known to play our best on the biggest stage.
I do think the 1 & 2 spots could go either way right now, but only we can beat us.
I would rather not play Louisville in the first game. (Only because we have already beaten them and Michigan would be nice to add to our graveyard!)

"eye test" imo should come into the mix at some point.
IMO we will be #2 tonight over michigan b/c michigan's resume isn't nearly as strong as ours.......or bama's for that matter.
but if you had a blind resume of the "top 10" with just the currently ranked wins/losses all lined up we'd likely be and deserve #1.
but eye test needs to be a part
just like IMO Louisville should be #7 b/c their resume just doesn't stack up to the 1-loss teams TAMU or Ohio State

Bottom line: a 'W' is a 'W'. And we have 8 of them, with three being against SOS/FPI/Top 25.
