Alabama this year, even if Bama were to lose to Georgia next week? That is the kind of hard question the Committee will have to answer. Now, I would not want to see a two loss Bama get in, it would set a really bad precedent. But, I will admit that I personally believe Bama would mop the floor with Cincy head to head.
It would be a case of that age old argument: Do you take the best 4 teams, or 4 teams with the best records?

heck ill do one better..say bama loses to uga and auburn..they will then have three loses but would still be considered better than cinci..but even so cinci should be rewarded for going undefeated and winning their conference vs a team who didnt..honestly this is the best time yet to let a team like cinci in to see what they can do.

I think the best thing for college football would be to pick for the conference championship. To much of an advantage to let two sec teams in. And ND needs to pick a conference too. They play one less game.
But it doesn't matter because ESPN wants a 12 team tournament.

could make an argument for a 5 loss team being better than cinci..remember we were told when it started that regular season was the first playoff because reg season games mattered..but allowing in 2-3 loos teams overs an undefeated team would nuke that argument

The thing is if Cincy played a power 5 schedule they probably aren’t undefeated. And if Bama or whoever else that is better than Cincy plays a group of 5 schedule, they are probably undefeated.

they have beaten every team on their schedule including one loss notre dame...at the end of the day wins and losses should matter..a team with 2-3 losses that isnt even a conference champ should not get over an undefeated team with cinci's resume

Opinions should be taken out of the equation. You win; you're in. It works in the NFL and the Super Bowl. If wins and losses don't matter, why even have a CFP? I understand your thinking--this scenario negates the whole idea of super conference domination.

"Opinions should be taken out of the equation" sounds great, but for CFB, it isn't possible. Go back to my point. UTSA is unbeaten. Do they get in over a one-loss UGA or one-loss Ohio State? Schedule matters.

in front of them including the number 5 team in the country on the road..everyone trying to make a case for bama with 2 losses but when does it end? 3,4,5,6 losses? because technically bama should beat them even with 5 losses..but it doesnt mean they should be in the playoff over them

I'm not advocating that Bama be in. I wouldn't put a two loss Bama in, even with a close loss to UGA. But, I also don't default that the only requirement is going undefeated. I don't think it's a simple as saying, they won all their games - put them in. Schedule has to matter.

absolutely - flip schedules and Cincy is 8-3, Bama is 11-0. Bama would beat Cincy 9 times out of 10 in my opinion. I think this Clemson team would beat Cincy 4 or 5 of 10

bama doesnt play their schedule and vice versa. whats the point of playing a regular season when the argument just goes to "well if we had this schedule we would be undefeated"..and opinion doesnt matter the play off was put in place to settle it on the field..yet seems like its standard to keep non power five teams off of the field to have a shot

That is the question. 4 best or 4 most deserving.
If they really want the best teams, ask Vegas. Which 4 teams would be favored over every other team in the country on a nuetral field. Those Vegas guys didn't get rich by just guessing.
As for me, even though the committee is tasked with "4 best" I think they should at least factor in most deserving.
(And that is why I favor expansion of the playoffs. I'd much rather argue over who is 12th and 13th, than 4 and 5.)
I think a two loss Bama team would get in over any 2 loss conference champ. But, I don't think they would get in over an undefeated Cincy or a 1 loss conference champ. (If I were on the committee, that is what I would be arguing for.)
But, who knows what the committee will decide.

Have you watched Cincinnati last year or this year? They were better than UGA last year and should’ve beat them. Probably a wash this year with them or Bama, I wouldn’t bet on either, if I had to I would take Cincy and whatever points they are given.

How can you say Cincy was better than UGA when UGA won without 9 starters who were opt outs and also outgained Cincy by 409 to 305 yards. Having a 4th quarter lead doesn't make you better. Also, do you really think UGA was motivated to play Cincy?

I’m in the wins & losses matter group. If wins & losses don’t matter then there is no reason to play ANY games. ESECPN can just do a TV show and vote for their 3 favorite sec teams and their token B1G team. BAMA’s loss to unranked TAMU means that they don’t get anymore mulligans.

Getting beat by an unranked Texas A&M team with top 10 talent on their home field with 110,000 fans is better than almost getting beat at home by an unranked Tulsa team with no talent.

Where they are now is way more relevant than where they were at the time of the game. Wasn't Florida top 10 when Bama beat them? There's no way in hell I'm giving Bama credit for a top 10 win in that game.

beginning, so that teams like Cincy, which don't play in a P5, could have their shot at the title.
Of course, there is an argument about the weakness of one or more of the P5's, but I'd be surprised to see FCS teams in the top four repeatedly. History doesn't favor it.
Another argument could be made for creation of super conferences of 20 teams with FCS teams included, and frankly, I wouldn't be surprised to see movement in that direction, sooner rather than later.
I am not sold on this 12 team play off idea, as it seems an overcompensation for the current model to those opposed. I understand floating playoff sites, but it seems it would make it a heck of a lot easier on fans to centralize, much as baseball has done. Dallas comes to mind, as a decent location. as long as arrangements could be workable with the Cowboys.

Nov 25, 2021, 9:18 PM

Championships should be about who wins not who’s better. If Bama gets a shot at UGA as it will in SECCG and loses, they had their shot. Next. Sports should not be about voters deciding that a team is better so keep giving them another shot when others teams are waiting for their shot.

Winning has to count for something. I also think Clemson is better than quite a few teams in front of us in the rankings, but we have lost 3 games... they have lost fewer. You move up for winning, not just participating.

People have said the same about Clemson in the past. Clemson proved that it deserved a chance. Cincinnati can only prove it by being given the same chance. Personally, I think conference champions should compete in the CFP. If a team can't win the championship of its conference, it shouldn't be competing in the CFP. It's simple and eliminates opinions.

I don't think conference championships should be much of a factor. It should be a factor, but sometimes we just know some teams are stacked that are runner up. Sometimes the two best teams are in the same conference. On the other hand, sometimes certain conferences are just weak and the road to winning the conference championship isn't very tough. JMHO

Conferences should be more balanced, and these types of debates will probably ensure that it happens. The SEC wants to dominate all others with a superconference which effectively eliminates the concept of wins and losses determining who is better. The CFP needs to be revamped.
To isolate the Cincinnati question, it will be resolved on its own soon since they have joined the Big 12. We will find out whether or not their program can compete on that level.
Wins and losses must matter.

The best records (conference champions) should play and let the game decide. That’s the fair way

I think a 13-0-0 Cincinnati team would be better than a 11-2-0 Alabama squad. The three numbers because (for team evaluation purposes) I consider an OT to be a tie.

If Bama loses to UGA they will have proven they are not the best team in their conference. Other teams with better records deserve the opportunity to see if they are better than UGA. The conf championship IS the first round of the playoffs
