One of the strangest things I ever heard was "Hose Pipe"

when I was a Clemson freshman in 1976. Good gosh you upstaters, there are many other names that you can use:
water hose
garden hose
or just plain "hose"
Why the heck do you call it a hose pipe? One of my old girlfriends (1980's) called it a hose pipe and it drive me crazy. My wife is from Anderson and she use to call it that, but not now. At what point on our state do they use the word hose pipe? So is it a Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Clemson thing?

Nope not an Upstate thing! I'm from the Midlands and growing up there they were called hosepipes. I'm 74 and they are still hosepipes! One word!

I have heard many southerners/South Carolinians call it a hose pipe. Born and raised in SC I just say Hose though
If I say Gar-den Hose I feel like I need to raise my pinky finger while sipping a cup of tea. Sounds a little british and formal to me.

Yeah, I agree. "Hot" water heater.
There is no such thing as a "hot water heater." People don't even realize what they're saying in that if you have hot water - there is NO need to have a heater!
It's a friggin water heater.

Same as "boot". We Carolinians call the trunk of a car the "boot". It's British. Hung around from colonial days because of Charleston SC.
When I worked at a large plant off of woodruff Rd, I was made fun of plenty of times for the usage of both hosepipe and boot.

Only time I'd ever used "boot" was when I attended British car shows with my Spitfires. Boot, bonnet, gearbox, windscreen, blinkers, saloon, wings, etc.

Ah, Sumter. Did y'all have runnin' water over there in Sumter when you were growing up or did you have to fetch water from the well? Without runnin' water, you got no need for a hosepipe.

Sometimes you see metal (or pvc) pipes coming out of the ground with a spigot/valve on the end of it. I always thought that metal was the hose pipe and you connected the actual hose to that pipe.

One of my first jobs was a store room supervisor at a big plant in a small Pa town. I got a purchase requisition to get "20 hoes" from the local hardware store. When they came in the guy who wanted them called me all upset. Turns out he really wanted 20 feet of hose from a local hardware store. Once hee calmed down we had a good laugh about it.

With a hose pipe you can wash off your ink pen if you run over it with your wheel barrel.
I've lived in Upstate SC all of my life. A lot of people say "hose pipe" for a garden hose.
Also, those same people tend to say "Ink Pen" for a writing pen...I guess it's OK to express the difference from a pig pen or a clothes pin.
And "wheel barrel"...I guess that could be just a mispronunciation of wheelbarrow.

I rented a house in Sebastian, FL.a few years ago... Asked my landlord for a hosepipe to flush the hot water heater...He looked at me and said "you Southern boys speak a whole other language." Couldn't argue that point...

I got to Clemson in 91' and went to Ole Norm's Hardware and Building Supply to buy a water hose. An older gentleman asked if he could help me find what I was looking for? I told him I needed a water hose and he said..."Oh, you need a hose pipe"! I politely told him no...I need a water/garden hose.
After about 5 minutes of confusing each other we figured it out! Good golly that's a wonderful memory! ??

When I moved into Clemson after being raised in Florida I had to learn what a "hose pipe", "hose bib" and my favorite was being asked if I had a "drop cord" someone in the dorm wanted to borrow.
In Florida they refer to those items as water hose, water faucet and extension cords.
I was born in SC, so rather than fight it I just fell back into line.

one person calling a spigot a bib! And though I'm sure I've heard "hose pipe", it sure isn't common around here...we just call it a hose! But as far as words that aren't really words..."irregardless" takes the cake for me! If you use that one, you are actually saying "not regardless"!

What's bad IMO is that the southern dialect is waning away. It tragic. Probably the reason you only hear "hose" in Charleston is it's no longer southern as in traditional thoughts. It's a host of everyone in the world. Southerners have been shamed into losing most of their uniqueness. I'd much rather say hosepipe, boot, and many other terms than "cah" or "bah".
