69 - Four Players Hold Clemson Football Record with 69 Games Played

Thanks to an extra year of eligibility for any player who played during the 2020 covid year, four Clemson Tigers have been able to set an amazing record. Unless eligibility rules are changed again, it is a record that might not be broken!
According to Tigernet’s article on BT Potter:
“Potter “tied James Skalski, Will Spiers and Will Swinney’s Clemson record for career games played (69) and matched Spiers and Swinney for the most consecutive games played (69).”
https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/news/clemson-kicker-bt-potter-signs-free-agent-deal-42185
Of those four players, only Spiers started all l69 games. According to Spiers’ bio on ClemsonTigers.com, Spiers: “started 69 games, a Clemson and modern FBS record”
https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/will-spiers/
Similarly, according to Will Swinney’s bio on CemsonTigers.com:
“His 69 career games played tied for the school and modern FBS record”
https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/will-swinney/#:~:text=completed%20his%20five%2Dyear%20Clemson,his%20four%20career%20carries%20for
And, Skalski’s ClemsonTigers.com bio:
“His 69 career games played tied for the school and modern FBS record”
https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/james-skalski/
Unless I am mistaken, the maximum number of games that a Clemson player could have played would have been 73. To have done so, that player would have had to have played in every game in the 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 seasons and four games in 2017 before redshirting. I think I am correct on that assessment, but somebody please correct me if I am mistaken.
Maximum Possible Number of Clemson Games Played: - 2016: 15 Games - 2017: 4 Games (Redshirt) - 2018: 15 Games - 2019: 15 Games - 2020: 11 Games - 2021: 13 Games
As for each of the 4 Clemson football players who is tied at 69 games played:
James Skalski: 2016-2021 - 2016: 14 Games - 2017: 14 Games - 2018: 4 Games (Redshirted) - 2019: 15 Games - 2020: 9 Games - 2021: 13 Games
Will Spiers: 2017-2021 - 2017: 14 Games - 2018: 15 Games - 2019: 15 Games - 2020: 12 Games - 2021: 13 Games
Will Swinney: 2017-2021 - 2017: 14 Games - 2018: 15 Games - 2019: 15 Games - 2020: 12 Games - 2021: 13 Games
BT Potter: 2018-2022 - 2018: 15 Games - 2019: 15 Games - 2020: 12 Games - 2021: 13 Games - 2022: 14 Games
That is why I call: Living the Dream!

69 - Jay Guillermo Recorded 69 Knockdown Blocks

Jay Guillermo worked through his fair share of ups and downs at Clemson, but he came through it all standing tall. He was an integral leader on Clemson’s OL that paved the way for the 2016 National Champions!
According to Dabo (From Sports Illustrated):
"He's one of the most remarkable stories I've ever seen," Swinney marvels. "Sometimes you've got to fail, and I think that was the case for Jay. Some guys never recover. But, boy, not only did he get himself healthy again, he became one of the best leaders I've ever had here."
https://www.si.com/college/2016/05/19/how-clemsons-jay-guillermo-overcame-depression
Coming out of high school, ESPN Rated Jay Guillermo as the #1 center prospect in the country. While such a lofty ranking was certainly a good thing, it also had a negative side as well. As a redshirt sophomore in October 2014, he suffered a broken foot in Clemson’s 41-0 win over NC St. According to Sports Illustrated:
“The setback was the last thing Guillermo needed. He grew up cheering for Clemson, and committed to the school in February 2011 as the top-ranked center recruit in the country, according to ESPN. By his third season in college, however, he had yet to justify that hype. An injury delivered a fresh blow to his psyche, and Guillermo wondered if he would ever live up to expectations. … Guillermo was supposed to star in the trenches, but as he languished on the sideline, he felt his love for the game slip away. "I kind of defined myself as a football player," he says. "When I couldn't play football anymore, I thought, I'm not worth a whole lot right now." … Guillermo returned to the field for Clemson's final three games of the 2014 season, playing 44 snaps against Oklahoma in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Dec. 29. But he had already tumbled into a debilitating cycle, and his troubling tendencies soon became routine. He skipped workouts and stopped taking care of his body. He went drinking three or four times a week. After entering the year at 315 pounds, he ballooned to 365 by January. He even contemplated suicide. … Afterward, Guillermo called his mother, Christie Clary, in Hickory, N.C., where she serves as a volunteer coordinator at Safe Harbor Rescue Mission. He uttered nine words that once would have seemed unfathomable: I don't think I want to play football anymore.
https://www.si.com/college/2016/05/19/how-clemsons-jay-guillermo-overcame-depression
Credit to the Clemson staff for allowing Guillermo to work through his issues. Guillermo spent time with his grandfather getting himself back into the right frame of mind and body to move forward. According to the Gaston Gazette:
“Guillermo thought he was done with football in February, leaving behind two years of 16 games (and one start) of playing experience.
Though never officially diagnosed with mental illness, he was treated for depression and had regular appointments with an endocrinologist, a sleep specialist and a general practitioner.
With high blood pressure caused by gaining 50 pounds since leaving football, Guillermo sought – and found – a refuge in rural Cleveland County.”
https://www.gastongazette.com/story/sports/2015/12/30/former-burns-product-guillermo-overcomes/32814174007/
To his credit, he made it all the way back! According to the same SI article:
Each morning he woke up, ate breakfast and drove his 14-year-old brother, Justin, to school. Then he would work out, either in the weight room at Burns High or in his grandfather's backyard, taking a few swings with the ax. His wood-chopping time evolved into 30-minute spurts of meditation. "It was Rocky-esque," Guillermo says.
He showed up for his first workout at Woodland Cemetery, a conditioning spot referred to in the program as "Cemetery Hill," and stunned teammates and coaches with his performance. He weighed 335 pounds, a 30-pound drop from his max weight the previous fall, and was suddenly beating several of Clemson's veterans in sprints. A strength coach pulled him aside and patted him on the back. You must have worked your tail off at home, he told him. "From that point on," Guillermo says, "I put the impression in their head that I was there to work."
That night Guillermo called his grandfather back in Lawndale. He spoke glowingly about his mindset, both on and off the field. Greene recalls beaming as he heard his grandson on the other line.
"I think I made the right decision," Guillermo said.
https://www.si.com/college/2016/05/19/how-clemsons-jay-guillermo-overcame-depression
Indeed, he did! Jay Guillermo’s bio on ClemsonTigers.com describes Guillermo as follows:
“a two-time All-ACC starting center for the Tigers … posted 69 knockdowns in 2,552 snaps over 46 games (29 starts) in his career.”
https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/jay-guillermo/
NavySports.com adds the following about Guillermo:
“A dominant offensive lineman for head coach Dabo Swinney at Clemson from 2012-16, Guillermo helped the Tigers amass a 60-9 clip during his time in Death Valley, including a 35-5 record against Atlantic Coast Conference foes. Clemson captured a pair of ACC titles during that span, and made five bowl appearances, including berths into the College Football Playoffs (CFP) that culminated both the 2015 and 2016 campaigns for the Tigers.
Guillermo saw action in 46 games (29 starts) over his collegiate career, and amassed 69 knockdowns in more than 2,550 snaps as a leader on the offensive line. A four-time ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week and 2016 Hammer Strength All-American selection, he was voted as a permanent captain as the starting center for the 2016 squad that posted a 14-1 record, including a 35-31 win over Alabama in the National Championship Game.”

Outstanding, Mr. Guillermo! Outstanding!!

After Clemson:
According to WYFF, after leaving Clemson Jay Guillermo attended rookie camps with the Tennessee Titans and with the Buffalo Bills. He later signed a CFL contract with the Toronto Argonauts, before deciding to retire his playing days.
https://www.wyff4.com/article/former-clemson-lineman-retires-from-football/9990696
Since he stopped playing, Guillermo has coached collegiate football at several locations. According to NavySports.com:
“Jay Guillermo is in his first year as offensive line coach joining the Navy coaching staff from Mercer.
Guillermo had joined the Mercer staff after the conclusion of the 2023 season from East Tennessee State where he had served as the offensive line coach.
Guillermo was the engineer behind an offensive line at East Tennessee State that helped pave the way for one of the Southern Conference’s top rushing attacks last season. The Bucs topped the 200-yard rushing plateau four times in 2023, including a 286-yard performance in an early November shootout with league rival VMI.
The Maryville, Tenn., native got his start in coaching in 2019 as a graduate assistant coach at Georgia State and then broke into the profession on a full-time basis as the tight ends coach at Western Carolina for an abbreviated spring 2021 season.
Guillermo spent the 2021 campaign as the offensive line coach at Carson-Newman, a perennial national contender on the NCAA Division II level, and then made the move to Charlottesville, Va., where he served as a graduate assistant coach for Virginia during the 2022 season.

AND: YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS GUILLERMO’S DABO IMPRESSION:
Apparently, Jay Guillermo also does excellent impressions. Here is Guillermo’s impression of Dabo:
