Here is the reason that I can recall my room numbers...
Mar 12, 2021, 2:00 AM

|
My first professional job after graduating from Clemson involved writing technical documents for 688 class and 726 class US Navy nuclear submarines. As part of the detailed security background check, I had to list all residences where I lived for more than 2 weeks. I had to return to campus in order to get the room numbers. I found out later that investigators actually paid a visit to these residence halls looking for people who remembered me. I saved a copy of the paperwork, and still have it. It was a very good starting point for subsequent background investigations and associated clearances in support of several NASA projects over the decades.

I can't remember my room numbers. I guess they had numbers? I too had a Top Secret Clearance. I had a COSMIC TOP SECRET which sounds like fake, but is a real thing.

I only had a regular Top Secret Clearance. However, during Ares I-X Flight Test Vehicle assembly, I could enter/leave the KSC (Kennedy Space Center) VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building), designated as a critical national asset, 24/7 with a swipe card through a turnstile.

numbers, but kudos to those that do.
I know I lived in the tin cans all four years, always on a top floor. The first year was in the one directly across the quadrangle from the loggia, the last year in the can to the immediate left of the loggia. The key event was when we finally got A/C. lol.

I'm a December '84 ME graduate
Mar 12, 2021, 8:40 AM
|
|
I mid-year transferred from Lander College with 1.5 years of credits, but only 1 year was applicable to my ME curriculum. This year of credits from Lander covered almost all of my non-engineering related classes, required and elective. This left me with almost completely engineering courses. It took a lot of planning to figure out how to graduate in 3 years taking all of the pre-requisites into account. A big key was, after my first (mid-year) semester, taking Calculus II and Physics I the first summer session, and then Calculus III and Physics II the next summer session. I enjoyed living in #10 Holtzendorf YMCA for 2 semesters, but I was involved with starting a fraternity and I moved into our new fraternity's hall in the dank, echo filled, basement of Bradley Hall on the quad. Put this whole story together (and I left out a LOT), and I changed rooms/roommates a lot also.

Mine is easy to remember. All 4 years from 77 - 81 was Johnston E-5. I guess I should have moved around more but I met a group of guys freshman year that I am still friends with today so we just stayed put.

I would have preferred not to have moved around so much. My favorite dorm that I stayed in was #10 Holtzendorf YMCA.

being a co-op student made that hard. Other than the first 3 semesters then the last straight year I was on campus then at work alternating. I did 4 work semesters so my roommate always needed to find a new roommate. Cooperative education was great for me but made finding a place to live was a challenge.

... to have the same room all four years. Johnstone C-806, from fall '79 to spring '83. I did take a couple of summer classes and stayed off campus for those, but I was all in for the tin cans, rest their souls. I actually remember our dorm room phone number: 656-8587.

87-88 Clemson House 503 (My Grandad said I lived at the country club compared to the barracks he lived in in the 1930s. We had cable TV and A/C in the dorm, which were two luxuries we didn't have at home.)
88-89 Clemson House 431
89-91 Old Triplex on Old Central Road
If a fortune teller had told me in 1987 what my annual salary would be in the year 2021, I would have thought I was going to stike a gold mine or something. Then I found out how much money it takes to pay the rent, put food on the table, a car on the road, and raise a family, and no matter how much money you earn there's never much left over at the end of the month.

Yes, I remember his name for my freshman year in C-821, Jerry XXXXX. I searched online and located him two years ago, called him in New Jersey, and had a nice chat...for the first time in 56 years.

I really missed out. I couldn’t afford to live on campus so I stayed with my parents at our house about 10 miles away all 6 years I was a student. Worked my way through. Never got invited to a campus party but at least I stayed out of trouble. And got mom’s home cooking too. Would have loved to get the campus experience but it was still a great 6 years, albeit with 6 losing seasons in football.
