I'd Like To Stir The Pot A Bit....

Dec 26, 2021, 11:03 PM

For all of these players AND teams that opt out of bowl games. The players don't want to risk their chances of making it to the big time payoff of playing in the NFL. I guess I see this. What about the teams that decide not to go bowling? They are afraid of COVID. They never seem to be afraid of telling their players to go out there and kick the **** out of the opposition. Nor, does the risk of their own players getting hurt ever stop them from competing. And I do believe injuries (sometimes very serious) sustained in the course of games far exceed anything players or coaches have suffered from COVID. Are these teams being sincere by opting out, or are they being somewhat hypocritical? Not sure myself. Thoughts?

I think you’re right.

Could also be the liberal Marxist university presidents virtue signaling…showing how caring and responsible they are.

or maybe the threat of lawsuits if knowingly risking their young lives because some young people had myocarditis from Covid. Or maybe it was from the vaccines. There’s so much misinformation out there.

But only one side is allowed to politicize a communicable disease. It’s for the greater good. Even though the “sophisticated, vaccinated crowd” in little, tiny, Washington DC is seeing a huge explosion in cases. So…sophisticated.

Lot of Republicans refusing to wear mask and refusing to get the vaccine is the reason

Bowls are becoming a financial burden to some schools

Dec 26, 2021, 11:17 PM

There should not be any conference affiliation for bowls. No divvying up and spreading the wealth. Let Clemson go to a bowl and keep all the money generated for it.

Dec 26, 2021, 11:20 PM

So they opt out because of $$$ concerns?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Let’s say you go to work all year long and get 100% of your checks deposited in your bank account.

Dec 26, 2021, 11:39 PM

Then in December your checks are split evenly between every family on your block and half of the families have nobody working at all to build up the kitty.

I would be fine with it if the money was only split between the schools that qualified, were invited and played in a bowl. But to share it with an additional 5-6 schools that more than likely don’t even try is garbage.

For instance, what % of the Cheeze-It Bowl $ will go to Clemson and how much to the other ACC schools?

Re: Bowls are becoming a financial burden to some schools

With 3 ACC teams not playing in their bowl games, Clemson will get less revenue. ACC you’re welcome for Clemson continuing to subsidize the league.

More evidence that college football as we know it is dying.

It was a real privilege getting to experience Clemson Football when I did. 1999-2021.

Not sure about the teams opting out but if players opt out, that’s there choice, but they should pay their full-ride scholarship back to the university. Should be cut from the team as soon as the decision is made and any after season bling should not be awarded to them. You don’t quit on your team. As for teams quitting, I’m not sure how to approach that. I wonder if it’s solely the schools choice.

Red hot pablo...

I understand your point, and if a kid opts out of a playoff game, I agree.

But these bowls games are not important enough for a kid to risk his future..
If a kid gives you three years of hard work and whats best for the program....then surely you can give him one meaningless bowl game

Re: I'd Like To Stir The Pot A Bit....

Dec 27, 2021, 1:11 AM

I see your point, but I never said he couldn’t opt out, but I think there should be consequences. If you look at it that way, he could have opted out to play any regular season game because he was concerned about the well-being of his future. This used to be a “team” sport. It’s not that anymore unfortunately. But I respect your opinion Trey.

I think it is more about financial concerns and athletics department’s facing money issues. Many teams actually lose money going to bowl games. I believe in 2016 when Clemson won the NC the AD lost close to a million dollars because we had to evenly split the money across the ACC. Since schools are already suffering financially going to a BG and go into further debt makes sense for the schools to decline the bowl bid.

I don’t think schools should have to share the BG money. Then if a school accepts a bowl bid then backs out of the BG there should be some sort of penalty regardless of the reason.

They are making it to easy for teams to cancel games, for players to opt out of games or go through that worthless TP. We are teaching our kids to look for the easy path through. Fortunately Dabo and his staff have a different approach to recruiting and I hope they do not change. Do change the culture Dabo has worked years to build. “ Best is the Standard “

I’m not too worried about whether NCSU or whoever, are losing money going to sub bowls. All of these teams whining, pay their coaches and usually former coaches royally and drive the market to infinity.
Teams and players opting out is caused by the BCS - the other bowl games are pointless in their minds, and personal brands are not enriched.
We are entering a time that the players and coaches will make all of the money and non revenue sports will be eliminated due to lack of AD revenue.
When everything is about money, non producers go away. It’s just the way the market works.
So while NIL sounds good to the players and multimillion $ contracts sound good to coaches, it’s not sustainable unless 40,000 iptay people pay $50k each plus $500/seats in the BiLo Stadium.

Just read about Russell Wilson and the need for a better line for him to play better - gee Russ, you make more than the rest put together, how do you expect us to acquire said linemen?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Haven't read anything about it yet, but I'm curious

Dec 27, 2021, 4:49 AM

as to any reimbursement to Memphis for their costly trip to Hawaii.

That Hawaii waited until the day before that bowl to opt out was inexcuseable, regardless of their justification. In addition to a hefty payment to Memphis I'd like to see invitees next year roundly and soundly decline, thus leaving that bowl high and dry.

I understand the reasoning, but to me it's a cop-out against their schools and teammates for players to refuse to play in the post-season. However, that's a decision those players will have to live with, as I believe it would be difficult to penalize them, if they've contributed 100% previously.

Re: I'd Like To Stir The Pot A Bit....

Dec 27, 2021, 9:08 AM

The question that is never asked is, what is the minimum number of players needed to play a game? Schools are allowed 85 players and in Boston College's case, the news was that 40 of those players are not available to play. Just because a player is a running back or linebacker he is not immune from injury or COVID. How would we do Wednesday if we had 1 running back and he was a non-scholarship player? Teams have to be able to put 11 players on the field at a time and sadly, that may not be possible in some cases.
