belittled by intellectuals for not "trusting the science". The problem with putting an Immunologist in charge of the COVID response with the mandate of minimizing deaths is that everyone assumes he's the smartest about a pandemic because of his scientific and medical background. In reality, his extensive study in a single field, coupled with so urgent a mandate, can lead (and reasonably would lead) to tunnel vision. If your only tool is a hammer, every problem is a nail. So how does an immunologist limit the spread of a virus? Limit social interaction. Does an immunologist have the bandwidth or background to consider the social/emotional tolls of such a decision? How many drug overdoes victims can be directly attributed to that decision?
Easy for me to say, I know. But my point is that calls to "Trust the science"...far from being the rallying call of the enlightened...can sometimes be a lazy and simplistic view of what science actually is, or the larger picture.
