I'll bet it is a challenge on the practice field drainage given they are below the level of the lake. Seems like you'd do this after spring practice rather than shortly before yet stadiums change sod these days and have games a few days or a week later. Still not sure how that is done so quickly

There is no reason to do it prior to this summer when the Bermudagrass is viable and growing. The elevation of the fields with regards to the lake have no bearing on what they do. Generally when this work is done, they basically build the field like a huge golf green with 4" or 6" pipe laid in trenches at certain intervals (10' - 20' in golf greens). The trenches with the pipe are filled with pea gravel or small stone. In a golf green 4" of gravel is placed over the entire surface, but I am not sure that they do that on athletic fields, although it would be a good idea.

After that it is overlaid with about 12" of a sand/peatmoss mix. A little topsoil can be added but you don't want to slow the percolation rate of water too much. I would prefer that the field be sprigged with one of the newer Hybrid Bermudas (Latitude 36), but the old T-419 is perfectly fine. They will probably use sod though. Hopefully the sod will have been grown on the same type of soil mixture that is in the practice field. Bu bnuilding fields like this you can also cut down on the "crown" in the middle of the field because of the much better internal drainage.

This procedure also allows for SubAir units to be installed that will literally suck the water out of the soil profile after a big rain, but I doubt if they will go to the expense to install it. I don't think we have pumps in Memorial Stadium either.

I hope this means bringing in some sand, gravel, additional sand spurs beggar lice, goat heads and adding some mud holes. Practice ain't supposed to be fun. Sounds like the fields are going to be real nice, may cut down on a few injuries.

The new softball facility has field turf...

Feb 6, 2020, 11:57 AM

I wonder how long it will be before Death Valley is converted to field turf as well. I know if has been a serious topic of discussion among the administration and the athletic department for quite some time now.

I think more than half of the teams in the ACC still play on natural grass (Clemson, FSU, NC State, Pitt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Duke, Miami and Georgia Tech).

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.
