Are you the man of the house and sit at the head of it?
Are you a beta male and sit on a side chair?
I sit at the head of the table closest to the living room.
Wife of sits at the other end of the table closest to the kitchen
Kids sit in one of the side chairs. They shuffle where they sit constantly

Our kitchen table is square, we hardly ever eat at the dining room table. Me and my son sit side by side like the Kings we are, while mama and the doggies flank us. We pass out morsels of food to them as we see fit.

Well, usually we're eating in front of the TV on the couch, but if we have guests over for dinner, I absolutely will have one of the heads of the table.
If I'm eating at someone else's house, I make a point not to take the head of the table.
