So yeah. I guess we are the world's trash can. We take that trash and turn it into riches. Trump knows this. He's a prime beneficiary of what he despises. A shinning example of the progeny of a poor German immigrant family. And when Trumps grandfather was struggling to make a name for himself in the US there were people just like Trump who put an end to the system (for decades) that even allowed his ancestors to be here.

Circle of life I guess. Maybe it's just the brown skinned immigrants who are garbage? I don't know. Vote for this at your own peril.

I'm third-generation German garbage myself. Actually, my grandmom's parents were potato farmers from the Artaman League, this farm collective that was apparently racial purists but not quite racist or genocidal enough for the Nazis, and so they ran for their lives in the '30's before they could get rounded up and disappeared like everyone else the Nazis didn't like. (But Sweet Jesus my grandmom was racist as $^%^; she hated everybody but she particularly despised Fins; she referred to them as "squareheads" and I vividly remember her warning me at great length how shifty and no-account Finlanders were. I spent a lot of my early childhood looking around corners for Squarehead Fins up to no good, I just knew they were out there. Thanks, Grandmaw!)

In most of my family's defense, though, most of them weren't racists, they were just drunks.

Fortunately none of us are our families. And if you're an immigrant, for one reason or another you're looking for a fresh start, and a lot of those reasons are sometimes not very nice. But, you know, give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, and all that...without that, I certainly wouldn't be here, and if folks really knew their family histories I suspect I'd be far from the only one with a story like that. I can tell you some colorful ones about some of the dads of the Latin kids I used to coach back when I was a soccer coach, and my son's best friend growing up was Colombian...and the Feds were trying to deport his mom his last couple years in high school. (His dad had gotten citizenship, for one reason or another she hadn't. But the woman had been here 20 years at that point and made a very good living cleaning houses...why the $^$# were we trying to deport her again? I truly did not get it, the woman was awesome.)

I agree we need far better border controls that the turnstile we've got going now. But where do Americans think the folks willing to do the hard, dirty sh!t jobs no one else will touch come from? And where do they think the bodies are going to come from? Replenishment fertility level is 2.1, and ours is running at 1.7, I believe...and the only reason we're not suffering the same demographic collapse most of the rest of the industrialized world is looking at is because of immigration.

Back in the day of Trumps grandfather, there were Americans preaching the same rhetoric Trump is preaching. They rose to power in the early 1900s as did groups like the KKK that rebranded itself during that time to be anti-immigration. And back then the zenophobes were descendants of the original American settlers, themselves immigrants.

Nothing new here. The way everyone thinks this is new though, is concerning.

Sure, but did you ever stop to ask why? The problem you're not getting is, if you're going to maintain an industrialized, urbanized society, women have to have agency...and that includes the right to control their own bodies. You try to take it from them and wind the clock back before women's rights...well, look no further than the Taliban, Iran, or the Amish. It doesn't work. Women got into the workforce in the Western world - followed closely by the Far East - for one simple reason, and that was because our industrializing society needed more labor than men by themselves could do - far more.

On the other hand, when women have agency and start being career women wanting things for themselves, and especially when those women then move into cities where kids are expensive, birth rates plummet...and as we've seen worldwide, they plummet below replacement level...often well below. Most of the industrialized and even developing world is teetering on the brink of collapse because of it.

So you have to have both: women have to have agency...and yet, they also have to have more kids if we're going to maintain or build on our population. Actually the ideal is about 2.3 kids per woman - it gives you slow, steady, 10% growth, but it does not overwhelm your infrastructure with a population explosion.

So how do you get there?

The answer's fairly obvious if you stop and think about it. But to get there you do have to abandon the notion that politics and even culture are a zero-sum team sport, where someone else has to lose for you to win...and just solve for x.

Honestly, the feminists have prevented more Americans from being born than legalized abortions. That and the birth control pill both account for less Americans than abortion.

And we're so money-driven that we sacrifice family, health, and whatever else, to chase that dollar, and buy that fancy car, boat, etc. That comes with a cost. One we have for decades offset with imports and immigrant labor.

Women want security. Period. They used to see marriage and a man as a means to being secure. Today they have their own careers, and men are not needed, and they won't be bothered with children. So we become the wealthiest country on Earth, and perhaps the most socially dysfunctional as well.

While I don’t disagree with the reasons we are where we are…do you not see all of this as an inevitability in a free society?

I support those who choose to live a more traditionaI lifestyle, but we certainly can’t (and shouldn’t) force women back into those roles.

You know, many times I've heard the worry about not meeting replacement levels, but the world population could shrink by 25% and there would still be about 5.75 billion people. Doesn't seem that concerning to me.

This guy puts it best. It's about four minutes and it tells you what's about to happen to the other industrialized nations in the world, starting with China, but a bunch of European countries - including Italy - are right behind.

We have a 40-50 year grace period, mostly due to the fact that our Baby Boomer generation was immense, and Gen Z was also very large...plus, immigration has been much higher here. But it will get us too if we don't start taking note of what's about to happen most everywhere else in the so-called "first world". From what I've been hearing lots of places, it's going to be real hard to miss. Basically: if you've ever dreamed of a European vacation, you might want to do it soon...because you are running out of time.

that can't connect their own immigrant past to people doing the same today just a few decades later.

For instance my mom's side are proud immigrants from Sicily. Came in to Ellis Island and all that. They have mentioned it my whole life and talked about their past. Italians/Sicilians were demonized for a long time in the early days of coming over to the USA.

And yet plenty in my family with that background who are repeating these talking points from Trump now. One family member goes to a local Mexica restaurant weekly and gets along great with the Mexican owners, talks to them about how they go back to Mexico to see family etc.

and yet still supports this Trump rhetoric. Its like??? I know people roll their eyes at the comparisons to Nazi Germany but it's exactly how the ordinary German citizen was slowly radicalized against their Jewish neighbors.
