please 'like" the FB Page, "Take The Flag Down SC" :
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Take-the-flag-down-SC/1671717746376616?fref=ts
It is a community page that offers discussion/suggestions on moving forward.
I am descended from Confederates on both sides of my family, and I understand the Heritage angle. However, it is, in my opinion, past time for the flag to be removed from the Statehouse grounds.
There wil be a vigil for the Charleston victims on the Statehouse grounds from 7-9 this evening, for any in the Columbia area who would like to join us.

Should the African American monument also be moved?

overlook the fact you're a chickenfan too embarrassed to admit your usuck ties in the handle you chose, but don't think we've overlooked the dumbest post of the day.
run back over to fgf, or the juvenile cockytalk (which is probably more akin to your undeveloped thought process) and tell them that Clemson fans are putting aside these differences to come together as a community and help our state heal.

Neither the flag nor the fact that it is there offend me.

I do think things would be better if it weren't there.
But I don't care enough to do anything about it, like protest or join a Facebook group.

occupied a position atop our state house until the 1960's. The actual sovereign confederate flag is the Stars & Bars. The battle flag (Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia) that's flown on our state house grounds has, and always will, represent not heritage, but protest, and that protest has long since run its course.
Interestingly enough, I worked with a hotel near Abbeville for a number of years recently that displayed the sovereign flag for years in its lobby along with other historical and national flags that represented our clientele and the area. The hotel's patrons represented a true cross-section of the community and acted as host to many prominent African-Americans who visited the area as well. There was not one single instance where anyone ever objected to its presence, even upon learning what it actually was.
Politics and race aside, the battle flag represents ignorance and misunderstanding far more than it does the 'heritage' argument. The monument that it now resides behind, erected in the late 1800's by widows and daughters of the fallen, facing north, is all the heritage anyone could ask for. The battle flag flying behind it cheapens its authenticity and solemness. That monument was built by pain. The flag was flown by politics. It's time for it to go.

I'm not a bleeding heart anything. I'm not affiliated with any party, and quite apolitical.
Let's get it over with and move on.
Let's host ACC and NCAA games again.
Let's not look like ########.

I had two Great Grandfathers in the Civil war.One was a private and was killed in 1865.The other was a Lt.and survived the war.I believe either one of them would say, take it down and put it in the Museum. Both were pawns of the rich political folks and slave owners from the South and were only fighting to protect family and property.

What book would you recommend that supports your position? Every time I see the "read a history book" statement, it's usually from someone who is history challenged.

reminded of the flag marches on Hilton Head many years ago

one year back in the '90's, both pro- and anti-flag groups had parades/marches on HHI during the Heritage - on different days
the anti-flag folks were well-dressed, well-organized, orderly, clean-cut.. and the vast majority were persons of color
the pro-flag people were slovenly, unruly, barely organized into a moving group... imagine a biker gang out for a walk - lots of leather and big tattoos... and of course, all caucasion
like a lot of folks at that time that i knew on the island, i was ambivalent about the flag (and i am a 'child of the Confederacy' still have the certificate stashed away somewhere
and like a lot of folks who saw those groups, my opinion swung to anti-flag afterwards
like tberg above, i think SC is better off to consign the flag to museums and remove it from public display on the Statehouse grounds

I wouldn't use FB with YOUR info, much less mine. Recipe for disaster IMO.
Please post on FB when you are going on vacation and when you will return, and whether or not you have any security on your house (if so, how to deactivate it).
Asking for a friend.
