A Pac12 and ACC merger is needed for college football

Jul 3, 2022, 8:22 AM

How boring would it be to have only two conferences? And then add in the plain awful football programs in those two conferences like SC and Vandy, it’s going to be a homogenized product. It’s already gotten to that for many fans of the sport.

3 conferences fighting for 4 playoff spots is the best possible outcome.

And who were the idiots who locked the entire ACC conference into a mid major contract for decades without escape clauses? Smdh

The Playoffs Will Expand like the NFL

Jul 3, 2022, 8:24 AM

There's no way the CFP stays at 4. 12 may be a low number. It may be easier to win the national title than a conference title if only 2-3 super leagues exists.

We’re gonna end up in the SEC what we should’ve been decades ago. And idiots that want us to be in the Big Ten please just stop you showing how stupid you are. And for you truly mentally challenged people the think Clemson doesn’t need to make a move if we want to stay at the top of college football stop talking. Let the adults pick the decisions.

Re: Overreact much?

Who says the SEC wants Clemson? I’ve only heard the Clemson market doesn’t add to theirs and South Carolina would block it. I’m good with Clemson going to either the SEC or B1G but neither seem probable.

Need a clemson alum back as governor

Jul 3, 2022, 11:37 AM

Get rid of the McMaster moron and put somebody like Niki Haley back in. The governor is technically COB of USC, but never uses that clout (except to force an unwanted and unqualified guy into the president position). With the right governor, USC can’t block Clemson from the SEC.

McMasters good Governor but Niki Haley sucked. I don't think one team can block Clemson from getting in if could doubt Texas was be in. Probably would take a few teams to block them in. Doubt Saban and Alabama really want Dabo and Clemson in SEC.

In the streaming age markets doesn't matter as much. UCLA is in one of the biggest markets but if only 10 people are watching their games it doesn't matter.

South Carolina will vote however the SEC tells them to vote just like Texas ATM had better vote Yay when Texas hit the ballot or they will be looking for a conference.

Re: A Pac12 and ACC merger is needed for college football

Jul 3, 2022, 12:56 PM [ in reply to A Pac12 and ACC merger is needed for college football ]

I totally agree with the point that you're making about the weakest joining the hands with the strongest, and believing they are actually a part of the strength of the strongest simply by association.

Most sports writers believe that the SEC is arguably the best FB conference in all of college FB, and I can't make a case of them being wrong, but, the truth is by their association, the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Vanderbilt Commodores, the Kentucky Wild Cats, Mississippi State Bulldogs, and the Missouri Tigers. In most seasons those 5 SEC teams at best, have been on average a 5-7 loss teams since their membership in the South Eastern Conference. Those 5 SEC teams, and their fan bases believe that year after year, they have been a part of the ( questionable ) SEC FB dominance.

When I think about the SEC being the best FB conference even with USUC, Vandy, Kentucky, Missy St, Mizzou in that conference, for reasons they have never considered, they have played a big part in helping the SEC to be thought of as the strongest FB conference bc, they are in conference scheduled cup cake practice dummies that help the powers of the SEC get ready for post season play. With those 5 teams being in conference, in season scheduled SEC practice dummies, and actually being SEC cup cakes that helps the SEC strength of schedule. The SEC will also have 2 or 3 Out of conference cup cake teams on their schedule that will also help their own SEC practice dummies. The powers of the SEC has a schedule of in season, in conference practice dummies, and they will have, in season out of conference practice dummies with those teams known as cup cakes, and that gives the SEC power teams up to 7 or 8 in season practice dummies that they will play leading up to post season play.

The power teams that run the SEC in FB, they will only play about 3 of the SEC power teams in regular season play before 1 or 2 of those teams will ever face a playoff team. As it has been said by many in our own Fan base, the SEC is top heavy with a few really good teams, and those teams could be contenders for the national championship every year....

College football will change again, Clemson will still be a player as we have been.

Fact is CBS learned that folks on the west coast don't care about bama v auburn or uga v Florida, NBC isn't renewing ND and is already moving games to other channels they own to show stuff that draws better on the main network.

It still mystifies me

Jul 3, 2022, 10:00 AM

That schools would voluntarily agree to lock up their grant of rights for almost 20 years without clear (and less draconian) options to exit the “contract.” I really think there is a strong argument that this contract is void ab initio for lack of consideration, especially in a SC court of law.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It still mystifies me

Jul 3, 2022, 10:36 AM

I'm no JD, but one of my old investors taught me that the detail of any exit is always the most important piece of a contract, not the entry!

To answer your question though, I'd say that providing "stability" of the conference would be consideration, right? I remember that Maryland was poached by the Big 10 and ND was dipping their toe into the ACC about 10 years ago. I also remember there being a lot of fear in the NCAA alignment changes. Would be interesting to see old TigerNet boards from those days.

As for SC law - do you think this would be adjudicated or arbitrated in SC courts? All of the ACC schools had to sign the grant of rights, and the conference is based in Greensboro. Seems messy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It still mystifies me

Jul 3, 2022, 3:16 PM [ in reply to It still mystifies me ]

I wonder why we would have agreed to this. I need to go back and look, but thought we had voted against it, but majority ruled.

Regardless, I really hope we don’t stay put. Think SEC is preferred destination, but Big Ten would be better than staying in ACC. I wouldn’t be surprised if Notre Dame finally makes a jump into a conference and think it’s more likely Big Ten.

I think it’s time for us to leave. Let the ACc sue us. If we make the move, others will follow (FSU, Miami) and there won’t be an ACC left to take legal action as this could get tied up in courts for years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The idea of “student athlete” has become a joke.

Jul 3, 2022, 10:55 AM

I don’t blame players or coaches from capitalizing financially. But I do blame universities for doing so. If they want to use major sports to market their school and unite alumni and fans, that’s fine - but stop acting like academics are a priority for the players. Most of the players care about their sport more than they do their education, and most at the power 5 level wouldn’t have gotten into their school based on academics.

I realize most fans don’t care one bit about it. I know I’m in the minority. But it’s insulting to what higher education was intended to be.

Judge, look up the rosters of the 18 or so other sports at Clemson and you will see name after name of student athletes you have never heard of. Football rules the roost but colleges and universities have sports for far more than football.

Jul 3, 2022, 4:40 PM [ in reply to The idea of “student athlete” has become a joke. ]

you're not wrong, but you're not 100% logical either. As a member of the media I have long ago dropped any expectationsof any school invovled in sports to inherently do the right thing. They never have. They never will. If you cna seperate the academic branch of eductation from the sports branch, it's eaier to understand and accept. There is no longer a stringent correlation between the two. The always have, but now even moreso, operate under different rules, objectives and goals. It's time we as fans stop playing the "bbbbb...but college sports!" card. Move on.

Knee Jerk Reactions Seldomly End Well

Jul 3, 2022, 11:00 AM

If you ask me, there should be 4 Major Conferences. This should realign the playoff selection as well. Each conference should produce a conference champion, and that champion will advance to the 2nd round of the playoff to face a non-conference opponent etc.

However, after listening to this nonsense that I'm hearing on ESPN and FOX Sports, I cannot believe my ears. If the conferences split this way, it will undoubtedly create a hostile condition whereas the conferences will just fracture and split again. This would create a disaster and a gigantic waste of money will ensue.

Below will establish a decent conference alignment if you asked for my opinion. Not that my opinion means much.

ACC
SEC
BIG 10
PAC 12

The BIG East never produced much in the name of athletics anyway.

Possible way PAC ACC merger could work (long)

Jul 3, 2022, 11:31 AM

What if the APAC had 10 teams west coast (current ten) and took ten from ACC. You play 5 permanent schools from your coast. Then rotate the other four, 2 this year, two next - repeat.

Then you rotate the ten schools from other coast, 2 each year-one home, one away. It does take 5 years to get to everyone, but better than what ACC does now.

Gives you 9 conference games. Everyone has one trip across country

Alternately, have 3 permanents, rotate the 6 on you coast in 3 groups of 2s. Gives you 5 games. Pick you 2 on west that travel to you, 2 you travel to. In 3 years you play everyone.

Two cross country trips. Things are doable.

Plus if you eliminated BC, Cuse, Miami, and Pitt, pretty much could drive to all away games except those two west coast teams.

A schedule of FSU, GT, NCSU each year with UNC, Duke , WF, Louisville, VT, UVa plus an Oregon, Utah, Stanford and Arizona wouldn’t be so bad???

Or better - FSU, GT, NCSU, WF, Louisville - then 2 of UNC/UVa//VT/Duke and Washington away and Colorado home isn’t so bad.

Plus it is a coast to coast conference-may not demand as much money, but not bad.

Maybe kick out Duke and Wake , add ND and Miami? UNC could schedule Duke like we do UofSC. Same with State and Wake.

Two best Atlantic Division meet 2 best Pacific Divisions. Not sure where games to be played…

Be honest and look back over the list of the last 20 Football National Championships and tell us if super powers have not been around for years. Football will not change regardless of whether there is no longer a Power 5 but becomes a Power 4 for example. There will still be a handful of teams that win all the time, some that win every year, and a whole bunch of teams that struggle to break even each year. The game will not change just because the bank accounts at schools get bigger.

Clemson is in trouble. Worst-case scenario is that the ACC stabilizes (thanks to the idiotic GoR) and we fall behind on a budget that pales in comparison to SEC & B1G schools…come 2036 we aren’t the football power or the brand we are today.

We are not going to get poached. It is too costly. A merger with the PAC-12 is our only viable option: that ensures the stability of the conference and reopens our TV deal to get us in shouting distance of the other two conferences. I don’t have much hope of that happening.

I’m usually against government control or interference with anything private, but I would applaud if they did. Firstly these are public schools that take public grants from we the people. Not some capitalist monopoly (which anti trust laws prevent). This amounts to a private takeover of a public institutions assets for outright corporate greed.
That said, we should have Begged to join the SEC years ago if for no other reason other than they are serious about football like we are. It’s hard to be in a conference with teams like Wake Forrest.

Ryan, nice call and summary about the NCAA and their 'efforts to stay abreast' of events impacting college sports in general and CFB in particular.

Regardless of what Clemson fans see as the future of CFB and of our future in CFB, everyone here had known for years that Mark Emmert and his staff at the NCAA were (and still are) little more than shills for big sports media (e.g., ESPN et al) and the money that flowed from big sports media.

As you had cited, the NCAA's convenience myopia about earnings rights for college athletes (why can't college athletes make money via outside work, yet non-athlete scholarship students can make money via outside work [delivering pizzas, painting, carpentry, cutting grass, etc.]) was inexcusable. But the Emmert cabal was comfortably living in high cotton, and didn't see the Civil War brewing.

Now the shizz has hit the fan, and it's just starting.

Big decisions looming for Clemson University overall and Clemson athletics in general ... your summary is terrific.

Fine work!
