As I have aged, my Clemson love has not lessened yet I find myself much more at peace with losses and not as upset as I was in my 20's, 30's, even my 40's. Losing still stinks, but darn if a bunch of 18/19/20/21/22 year olds are going to define anything about my life any longer. For years I would go through way to many emotions tied to the football/baseball/basketball teams and find myself no longer willing to stress over it.
Has anyone else experienced this ?? Is it my age, is it becoming a grandpa about a year ago, I cannot tell you but I have definitely changed my attitude before/during/after games.
Are my thoughts still that Clemson can win it all, YES! Do I want our Clemson Tigers to win it all, heck YES. But does it bother me if they lose some games and just have a decent season, not in the least.
Being calm during the LSU game, and even calmer being down 16-0 to Troy really made me think about this. Even last year I was disgusted with the Georgia game, and even more disgusted by end of season loss to Lamecrocks....
I wish I knew why this change has occurred but it is bothering me a little, but happy at the same time. What gives lol

I have mellowed with age as well; the highs are not as high, the lows are not as low.
But I still get upset when I see our guys play below their skills.

Throw in a seemingly never ending expansion of the playoff and well.....yea, I dont get too upset anymore. Its just not the game I used to live and breath for. Maybe age and having kids have something to do with it too - priorities and what not.

the transfer portal, NIL, and all the money now coming in/out or wherever the heck it goes has been a big factor in how much joy comes from the game.
Appreciate the response, I think the other priorities took a back seat for several hours every Saturday or anytime the Tigers played but that is changing rapidly.

I hate to agree but he does definitely seems much more complacent and always reminiscing about the old days.....which is something you wait and do when you retire, not fair to current guys....if that is the case, which it certainly seems to be. I am not in the locker room so not truly fair to say, but the things he says certainly come off a bit less "driven" than in 2011 and the next several years.

But I’m curious why some folks claim he’s become complacent? From my eyes I see a guy who coaches his ### off. He puts his entire soul into making men and winning football games. When we lose you can see it pains him. He wants to win every game with the same fervor he always has. At least that’s what I see with my eyes.
So what is it the “Dabo has become complacent” are seeing to make that comment?

game in that atmosphere. The changes that have been made in the west stands where I sit have significantly impacted my game experience. Miss seeing the folks we had sat around for 20 years. Now I sit in front of a couple that whine and spill stuff the entire game. Definitely not as enjoyable in the stadium. And don't get me started on all the pumped-in noise.....
I also think NIL and the current playoff situation have lessened the enjoyment. I watch very little football on TV that's not Clemson. Used to watch a ton. And you know, I don't miss it.

I just turned 30 this year and I'm light years different than I was at 20 handling games. It's maturity really. You realize Football isn't life and it's dumb and albeit childish to let it consume you. Plus priorities change.

Don't get me wrong, I was pretty upset about that game last year too because that one always matters but I was over it pretty quickly once I got back into "life mode". I'll still be invested into the fun of Clemson Football always but wins and losses don't hit me the same as they did years ago.

No loss sticks like it did back in college. It took me an entire season to shake the '04 GT Calvin Johnson loss of a 10-point lead w/ 2mins left.
main factors:
1. Family, kids, age, life priorities change things
2. No matter how good it gets. It will NEVER beat the feeling of being in Tampa in person watching us break a 35 year national title drought in dramatic last second fashion.............not even the 2018 beatdown of bama touched the Tampa feeling.
All that being said. We still go to games, pay the money, and expect Clemson to utilize every tool, advantage, $$$$$, & resources available to be elite...........when that doesn't happen, it's maddening, but the game to game highs/lows are not what they used to be 10+ years ago.

Pheebo that game in Tampa was exhilarating. We went the year before also in Arizona and that was heartbreaking. I didn’t get over that one for awhile. The one in Tampa was something else. I was delirious. I don’t think any game or experience compares to that one although I was at our 1st national championship game when I was a teenager. I was thrilled and surprised in 2018 but the one with Deshaun can’t be beat.
I was raised going to home and away games and would get so upset with losses at times as did our whole Clemson tailgating group. We travelled to many games together when I was a kid. Now I handle them differently because although Clemson sports are very important to me they aren’t my life. I get over losses much quicker now.

Sad, but true. As you say, no reason at all to stress. Enough stress in life without adding to it

All things else pale into insignificance. lol
Actually, aging does bring on some mellowing in attitudes about a whole lot of things, but I've lived to witness 61 seasons of Clemson football since my freshman year, and I've experienced all the highs and lows in between.
There is, also, an overriding consideration: no one at Clemson has ever called me to stand on the sidelines...nor asked my advice. Therefore, I realized a long time ago that I have absolutely no influence over our abilities to win or lose games, and once over, there is absolutely nothing I can do to change an outcome. Can I still get emotional? Of course, but they are controlled albeit still laden with expletives, stomps and fist-pounding. Then, I have a drink, and say, "What the helllll? It's over!"

Absolutely understand DK and it is called maturing. Finally at 73 and with a granddaughter staring her career at Clemson this year, I see more every year that a football game or a lousy day at the golf course are not the end of the world.

Soon be 82 and I agree football is not real important in life other than the friends I've made going to games, etc. One day at time and if we win ok but if we lose an't a big deal not even to the Lamecocks.

As has been clearly stated, the issue you are addressing is maturity. I'm 72 years old and few things in life aggravate me they way they did in my 20's and 30's. The difference in me and what you stated is that I still get angry over the poor play and coaching. But where 40 and 50 years ago I would carry that anger for weeks, I now only hold on to it through the duration of the game. When it's over, it's over! Age has a way of teaching us what really matters in life. Sports are fun, and have been a major part of my life since I was 8 years old. But they are, in fact, quite simply, entertainment. As such, they are no longer allowed to steal my joy and peace. I only wish I had recognized this 50 years ago! But hindsight is always 20/20, or should be. Go Tigers! beat Tech!

Agree Willy1505, no more stealing my joy because a football team comprised of essentially young kids learning life are not going to change a single thing in my daily life.
I want them to win, and hopefully they do, but no sense getting worked up about it.

But at the end of the day, win or lose, my happiness and well-being will not be determined by the outcome of a football game like it was in my 20’s. With the maturity of being in my 50’s now I can also enjoy the games more.

Oddly, I've always gotten more "bent out of shape" about basketball than football. I think, as you age, you just become more aware of things you can't control...so why get upset about them?
For me unfortunately, Portal and NIL have been my death knell for college athletics. I'm all about the school spirit - and I just can't get behind a group of guys who we had to bid for their services.
I used to be the last person to leave the stadium ("These guys have busted their buttocks to represent Clemson, so I'm staying to the end to support them!") But now - quite organically - I've lost that connection to our hired guns....I mean, to our team.

Agree joeyb!! The amateur aspect has left and is now about NIL money and bidding for players that you "hope" can help you win. It has certainly derailed my enjoyment of the game, but I do not blame the players because why not go for what you can. The lack of regulation, if it could even be regulated at this point, is what really stinks.

I hear ya tigerlex24, not sure I am ready to move into that mode just yet....need a little more time to mellow out to where I expect defeat and therefore basque in the victory, which actually sounds quite therapeutic now that I say it out loud.
I may try that.....nah, no way I can expect a loss but certainly can appreciate what you mean and how that helps out on GameDay!!

I still get fired up during the game but I don't let the losses linger anymore. I remember when I was young my dad telling me to calm down. Now I'm telling my son to calm down, we get wiser with age.

Maturing is realizing that allowing someone else to dictate your happiness and peace is silly.
I am absolutely not letting 18-22 year-olds, and their performance at sports, ruin my day if they lose.
Win or lose, sports are supposed to be entertainment. If they are not, something is wrong.
Too many people take it way too seriously.

And, it was one of the multiple reasons I chose not to renew my season tickets this year.
Like you, I learned several years ago, I can't let 18-23 year olds control my emotions more than 3-4 hours on any given Saturday. There are much more important people in my life that I cherish spending time with.

...mind when the Tigers laid an egg and lost (LSU) or just looked awful during a win (Troy). I can now put it behind me about 5 minutes after and move on with real life.
It's a combination of maturity, watching your kids grow up, having grandkids, and realizing that nothing that just happened affects my life in any meaningful way.
Oh, I still cuss at the TV and bemoan every bad play. But when it's over, it's over, and I just look forward to the next game lol.
You are certainly not alone.

I’ve pretty much evolved the same way. I’m 66 and up until a year or so ago a CU loss would ruin my week, just ask the wife. Now I just shake my head and say oh well. I’ve come to the conclusion the if you keep your expectations low you’ll never be disappointed.

I used to get so mad and bent out of shape when they lost! I actually had to be taken by ambulance one year to the hospital because I thought I was having a heart attack! I am getting to where I just don’t watch at times when they start playing because I can’t stand to see them lose! Lol
