frank beamer retiring, but want the blood in this non-issue...
Beamer apologizes for hitting player on helmet
10/23/2003 - Virginia Tech Hokies West Virginia Mountaineers
Associated Press
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer will probably not be disciplined for slapping a player on the helmet during the Hokies' 28-7 loss to West Virginia on Wednesday night.
"The administration and I agree that this single incident is not reflective of how Frank has conducted business throughout his coaching career," athletic director Jim Weaver said Thursday in a statement.
Beamer slapped receiver Ernest Wilford on the sidelines during a heated argument. He apologized after the game Wednesday night.
"There is no one I respect more in my football program than Ernest Wilford," Beamer said in the statement. "I should have shown him better respect. It came at a very frustrating time for all of us, but that still does not excuse my actions."
Wilford, a senior, said he accepted the apology. "I respect him as a man, I respect him as a coach. Now it's time to move on and regroup."
Virginia Tech (6-1, 2-1 Big East) came into the game ranked third, but the Hokies are certain to drop after they fell behind by 14 points early and never crossed midfield in the second half. It was Virginia Tech's worst defeat since a 38-7 loss to Pittsburgh on Nov. 3, 2001. The Hokies were the least-penalized team in the conference, but were flagged 13 times for 116 yards.
Virginia Tech plays No. 2 Miami on Nov. 1.

When I watch it closely , I think the coach was probably upset the Watson ran into him and thought it could have been avoided. He must have said something of the sort to Watson because u can see DeShawn's head snap around as he walked back to the field. Watch closely and you'll see Watson doesn't go out of his way to avoid him. Still, a bush league move on his part ! Hey, it's a sideline and people do get hit.

It looked to me like the NC State defender pushed Deshaun out of bounds towards the coach

The coach actually smacked the ball out of Watson's hands.

Curious if/what Watson said to him when he turned around, but no excuse for that.
The sideline is supposed to get out of the way... or help catch the players to slow them down.

What a low class move by their very "Bush League" assistant. I believe him and spurrier have something in common. They both have reached the pinnacle of their careers.

point clear that you have to show greater restraint as a coach, if you're going to "coach" 18-21 year old athletes to be mature and show restraint on the field.
Of course, this was nowhere near a firing offense, so what ever happens internally on the NCSU staff is enough.
And that's enough said on the whole matter I suppose.
