my freshman year. I knew it was buggy there too w no screens. Well I had a tempra paint poster of something I made. I noticed the paint coming off in little lines. Squashed a bug on the floor and noticed his residue contained day glo green. The bugs were coming out at night and eating the paint.

You really needed a fan to create white noise so you could sleep. You could literally hear a pencil being dropped on a desk in an adjoining room.

Honestly, it's been a while, but I believe that first pic could have been taken out of my room, either my first or second year - A-804, or A-904, respectively. The view itself brings back memories, and late in the afternoon it got the full blast of the Western sun and felt like an oven.
Go Tigers!!!

On your neighbor's answering machine informing him she's pregnant and he better get his ### back home.
He did. Left mid first semester. 1994. October or November. Johnstone E3 I think.

Many memories 62-64 and then I moved to one of the "shoe boxes". Hope Thomas has forgiven me by now for locking him out on the ledge at Johnstone.

The pay phone on a sunday night. Making a collect call home to myself to let the folks know I made it back to campus. Remember the heat, the cold, the steel bunk beds, hot plates, hall monitors, logia, quadrangle, sandwich shop, to name just a few memories.

That was my thought too when I first looked at that photo. Now I'm not so sure it is him. Regardless, Steve was a good guy (I was on The Tiger staff when he was editor) and gone way, way too soon.

Wish i had a photo of filling Max Foster's room in '69 with toilet paper... Us Merry Prankster's scoured the toilets for weeks loading TP and storing them under our beds... We opened the top storage shelf between rooms D-510 and 508 (if you lived there you know the shelf). A broom handle will hold 4 rolls and we wheeled them until there was no way to pack any more. Max (Dan Foster Sports Editor of The Greenville News was his dad)came whistling down the hall after a date, tried to open the door. No luck...After a few shoves he got a foot in the door. We stepped out and started laughing. He got mad and hit one guy and the fight was on. After the blood letting was over, they went to the can and washed up... The rest of us pulled all the paper out into the hall and rolled it like a road paver packer into C-5... The janitors had a conniption fit the next morning...Today that is probably a felony or at least dismissal... Dean Lomax had a lot of patience.

I remember a similar incident, except it was balled-up news

paper. Saved them up for months. The room was similarly slam full! It all got shoved down to the end of the hall and into the dumpster just below in the breezeway. Then someone lit it and all heck broke loose. Talk about a dumpster fire!

Was it on C7 in 1975 with your newspaper story? When I was a freshman two seniors left their top window open when they went home for the weekend. We went thru opened the door and poked their room head high with newspapers except we closed the window and turned the heat on high! It was early fall semester and still very hot. They had a heck of a time when they came back Sunday night.

Reply from Max Foster....
Max is a friend of mine. I did a C&P and sent him the story of his room being packed with TP. Here is his email response:
"Man what a jerk he was !! Or rather I was !! True 100% . Wish I knew who sent that !!! Funny - packing for beach and opened up 1970 Taps just 45 min ago!! Flood of memories!!! Thanks for sending
Max Foster"
CU Guru, if you want Max's email, let me now and I'll put you in touch.

Those photos take me back to 1968. Like most everyone of my era and maybe of every era in Johnstone I have a lot of memories of great and crazy times in that really old time monumentally large barracks like dorm. No AC, basic living at best, toilets and showers from early in the 20th Century, one phone per hundred yard long hall, and of course the ledges. I suppose the fact that it was rustic at best is one of the reasons people remember it so fondly an "EMBRACE THE SUCKAGE" mentality.
Seems a bit perverse, but I am glad I lived there.

It might have been a hall monitor meeting at the first of the year when they told you all of the things you weren’t supposed to do.
