The "insanity defense" for Roof

He can't make it. In order for that defense to work, you have to prove that you were not capable of understanding the consequences of your actions. Based on all current information, Roof planned and executed a well thought out plan, including and escape plan. This obviously shows that he knew what he was doing was wrong, and that if he was he would be in trouble. This isn't "Law and Order", most of the time this defense isn't even allowed, and on the rare times that it is allowed, it rarely works.
He was crazy, but not insane. There is a difference.

SC strill uses the M'naghten rule - pretty much have have the inability to tell right from wrong.
precise language is:
"...as a result of mental disease or defect, lacked the capacity to distinguish moral or legal right from moral or legal wrong or to recognize the particular act charged as morally or legally wrong."
http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t17c024.php
very rarely plead and very rarely works in SC
one way i've seen the question phrased: would the guy have done it if there had been a cop present?

Unable to tell right from wrong, and completely disorganized, like you found a gun on the ground, picked it up and started shooting, and even then, you're going to have a tough time with that defense.

I would be content with having every member of the church curb stomp his head into the pavement until it looked like a bloody pancake.
Televise it nationally.

I honestly believe that if public hangings was brought back, I surely believe it would reduce a lot of these murderous crimes against humanity....

Totally okay with the death penalty, but certain crimes

such as this, and the Boston marathon bombing, I'd rather see the perpetrators endure decades of degradation, pain, and abuse in prison. The death penalty opens the door for self-perceived martyrdom, and a quicker out. Granted there's no amount of suffering that someone can endure that would equal these crimes, but still, stretch the punishment out as long as possible on earth then let God handle what's left.

If you read the accounts of his earlier arrest

it sounds like he was casing Columbiana Center Mall
http://www.wistv.com/story/29353220/police-dylann-roof-arrested-for-trespassing-drug-possession-at-columbiana-centre
Mall security contacted a police officer patrolling the mall on February 28, 2015 about a man wearing all black who was asking store employees "out of the ordinary" questions.
Workers at "The Shoe Dept." and "Bath and Body Works" told security that Roof was asking them how many associates were working, what time they closed and what time they leave.
The officer approached Roof and asked him why he was questioning store employees.
According to the report, Roof told the officer "his parents were pressuring him to get a job." The officer asked Roof is he had gotten any applications from the stores and he said he had not.
I have a feeling that when the details of the investigation into Roof become public we are going to be shocked at what he was prepared to do.

When a significant portion of the population thumbs their nose at morality then you provide a venue for evil to flourish.
