Post from an OU board that really puts this CFB thing

Oct 10, 2017, 3:57 PM

into perspective. Flame away (i hate OU), but this guy gets it

This morning I read an article in the Tulsa World saying that was Iowa State's record against Oklahoma prior to yesterday's game and it put what happened yesterday into a different perspective for me. It made me think about the images of the Iowa State players and coaches when they stopped OU on fourth down on their final possession. It made me think of the images of the fans and players celebrating after the game. It made me think of the image of the Iowa flag planted at midfield. It made me think about how happy I was when I went to South Bend a few years ago and watched OU beat Notre Dame and how I thought later that night in the restaurant/bar I was in that the trip was once in a lifetime and had been worth every penny. It made me think about how happy OU fans must have been in Columbus a few weeks ago. Finally, it made me forget about my disappointment about yesterday's outcome and it made me happy for them, the Iowa State players, coaches, and fans.

5-74-2. Think about that for a minute and let it sink in. Imagine all of those losses for those fans. Imagine the hopelessness. I'm 42 years old and I've never in my life attended or tuned in for an OU game thinking we couldn't win. Even during the John Blake years. Being an OU fan always gave me the expectation that we could win on any given Saturday. But Iowa State fans, I imagine they had no thoughts of winning yesterday's game prior to kickoff.

Think about the travels and the money spent of fans of schools such as Iowa State. The commitment through the years made knowing that their team was going to get it's teeth kicked in by Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas, etc. And yesterday, the commitment paid off. I bet those Iowa State fans that stuck around Norman after the game had the time of their lives last night.

Remember how great you thought it was when Appalachian State beat Michigan, or when Liberty beat Baylor, or South Alabama beat Mississippi State, etc? We all loved those upsets. It's what makes sports so great. So it happened to us yesterday. Sure it sucks, and I said to my brother after the game that it put a cloud over the enjoyment of the rest of my college football Saturday. But we'll be fine and we'll expect to win every game that comes after yesterday. We're lucky that way, we're OU fans. Our season is still not over. We can still win the conference and still make the playoff. And with the the way our coaches are recruiting the future looks very bright. But today, I'm happy for Iowa State and I hope they woke up on top of the world this morning.

OU fan rationalizing what happens to them EVERY SEASON. If you can't improve make what you do seem important.

Good post. The few times I've been to a Clemson game that we lost (including last year's Pitt game), I always made sure to congratulate the other teams' fans when I saw them. For Pitt, that was a HUGE win last year. I had a Pitt fan behind us and he mentioned at one point very early in the game, if not before, that he just hoped we didn't run the score up on them! Poor guy was by himself (as a Pitt fan, that is) and had a hard time celebrating, but you could tell that while he was quiet on the outside he was jumping up and down on the inside.

Win with class. Lose with class. Nobody likes to lose, but it's going to happen, however infrequently, so at least do it with class.

I had my kids with me at the Pitt game and my son, 11, wanted to trash-talk the Pitt fans. I told him no, we need to congratulate them and tell them "good game" because they played a great game. We didn't. It made an impact on him and the Pitt fans we saw were very complimentary of the fans they heard from after the game. That's one reason why visiting fans love coming to Clemson games. They know that, win or lose, they will be treated with respect and class. Unlike that li'l ol' school down southeast.... ;)

Very worthwhile post! Any Tiger fan old enough to have lived through the 1960s through 1976 understands how uniquely successful Dabo’s tenure has been thus far. The Ford years were great except for probation so our younger fans best recognize just how blessed we are in the moment!

I live in NE Cola and therefore see and hear the Gamecock football fans long for any sustained degree of reasonable success. They won’t admit to admiring our success, but after Spurrier’s run they want a return to their idea of glory. Muscrap likely isn’t going to get them beyond a modest success and most know it. Do I feel sorry for them? Absolutely not! However I do understand just how blessed Clemson fans are by comparison. We need to appreciate the victories and learn from losses.

Remember 2-9 in 1975 every time you want to complain or find fault! Even closer keep in mind Coach West’s tenure in the 1990s.

Go Tigers!

Getting older puts a lot of things in perspective

Oct 10, 2017, 4:54 PM

When I married a USC alumnus, it made me see Gamecock fans as real people probably for the first time in my life. When I started a business, I realized that winning is good for business, no matter what team, but also realized that life goes on win or lose and that were a lot of things that took priority over following the aftermath of the win or loss all week long. Now with 3 young kids, I care about Clemson football as much as I did before, but only between kickoff and the end of the game. I wish the best for all our fans, athletes, coaches, and students outside of the game, but have way too much on my plate to let it worry me before or bother me afterwards. Even with all that said, the winning is a great bonus to the life I've been blessed with and my wife is a much better sport than I would be if the roles were reversed!

I go find all of those 5 bomb pics. The feeling goes away.

I grew up pitying them...When I was in 5th grade UGA won it

all, the next year we did...All I heard during JR high was "we're next....wait till next year". Then Black Magic happened and the ensuing loss to Navy...HeII, they didn't even win a Bowl Game in their best season ever...I felt so sorry for them, to be surrounded by Winners while they couldn't even win a freaking Bowl Game...The 5 Bombs changed all that permanently...#### em...#### em in the a$$ with a sharp stick...They pissed their bed, let them sleep in it

Those images are burned into my mind and I'll never forget.

You can't enjoy the winning unless you've suffered through losing. I think it's part of why most folks on here don't take this run we're having for granted.

Good post. People who let a loss make them miserable

Oct 10, 2017, 10:08 PM

For the rest of the week have lost perspective on sport. Two teams battling it out. On any given Saturday the underdog can find victory. So it was with Pitt last year. Great game plan, full effort and a few mistakes by Clemson...tip your hat to them, it was their day.

I am so much enjoying Clemson's recent success but Clemson was great fun when we won eight or nine games a year too.

I should add that it is the absence of this type of

Oct 10, 2017, 11:26 PM

perspective that frustrates me with ESPN. That's why they can't enjoy a big upset...they jump all over "what's wrong with Oklahoma!?!" I mean, be shocked, explore issues with the favored team at some point, but please otherwise focus on the team that's winning. Unless the favored team is truly stumbling all over the place, fumbling, dropping passes, etc.
