The question would be: what exactly does Elon have, and where did he get it?
The answer could be: nothing. Elon's FoS quite often. Usually, even. And you're right - the whole phenomena of deepfakes gives anyone plausible deniability...for anything, really. Usually.
Of course, Elon is the world's richest man. And people with old stuff that might be verifiable - like having copies stashed in a safe-deposit box, say, which serves as a timestamp nobody can argue with - could be a different story, and people with dirt often squirrel it away for a rainy day, or whenever they think they can make a buck with it.
That time would assuredly be now. And even a narcissistic kook like Elon might have thought when dealing with Donald it might be good to have some insurance and leverage.
I'll go with "Elon is probably FoS" for right now. But it's worth keeping an eye on.
