Evaluating Dabo's Record Among Current Head Coaches by the Numbers (Long)

The TNet article reporting how Greg McElroy had ranked College Football coaches entering the 2025 season got me thinking about how much Dabo has really accomplished!

Here is McElroy’s ranking of current Head Coaches:

1. Kirby Smart (UGA)
2. Ryan Day (OSU)
3. Steve Sarkisian (Tex)
4. Marcus Freeman (ND)
5. Dan Lanning (Ore)
6. Kalen DeBoer (Ala)
7. Dabo Swinney (CU)
8. Jeff Brohm (UofL)
9. Brian Kelly (LSU)
10. James Franklin (PSU)

One could argue with Dabo as compared to Smart and to Day, each of whom have win a national championship. It is worth noting that each of them won those titles with superior talent to their opponents.

But ranking Sarkisian, Freeman, Lanning, and DeBoer EACH above Dabo seemed curious to me. So I ran the numbers using each of these 4 coaches COMBINED vs Dabo:




By the numbers, McElroy's ranking adds up IF:

- 5 CFP Appearances (23 seasons) > 7 CFP Appearances (15½ seasons)
- 2 Title Game Appearances (23 seasons) > 4 Title Game Appearances (15½ seasons)
- 0 National Championships (23 seasons) > 2 National Championships (15½ seasons)
- 3 Conference Championships (23 seasons) > 9 Conference Championships (15½ seasons)

And these are the COMBINED records of those four coaches as compared to Dabo’s accomplishments ALONE!

Enough said!!

McElroy is just another in a long line of esecpn writers that suffer from the 'peter principle'.

Not sure dabo should even be ranked that high w losing the last 3 games we played against SEC teams and losing the last 2 out of 3 to the coots🤷‍♂️

Unless this is some kind of last three years rankings or something, this is a terrible take. What Dabos done career wise puts him among the top ten coaches of the last 50 years, much less the top 10 right now.

How he (or anyone else) could put those four in particular (Sark, Freeman, Lanning, and DeBoer) ahead of Dabo when they have accomplished far less is beyond me. The numbers in that chart tell a very one-sided story.

Dabo is one of the most highly accomplished coaches in the game today.
