Most embarassing losses in Clemson football history
Apr 14, 2021, 2:20 PM
|

Obviously the Orange Bowl loss to West Virginia would be #1. What are some others that come to mind? Don't list losses when we were mediocre. This needs to be epic fails on a big stage (or at least a semi-big stage).
Would #2 be the loss to OSU last year?

Begins with punt and ends with rooskie. Played over and over on every sports reel for a week. Absolutely sucked. It was even worse being in the stands, gut punch, kick in the shorts, pie in the face, all at the same time.

Had just read the week of FSU coming to CU for that game, in Sports Illustrated that Bobby Bowden refused to lose any game.We had them backed up and everybody just knew they’d punt. If they did, they’d lose. I argued with someone next to me that BB would do something to try to save the game,,, he said they had no choice but topunt.Well, the rest is history, and we can’t change history

The 1990 loss to Virginia, who had NEVER beaten Clemson in football. Virginia beat the Tigers 20-7 but Clemson never had a chance to win this game.

when the Ellington fumble / TD-in-the-other-direction happened. After that, a switch flipped for both teams - we couldn't do anything right and WVU could do no wrong, but had that one play been called correctly (TD Clemson yes a bad call I'm claiming it) we very well could have won that game, I think.

college football history. That would be quite an interesting topic, actually. You could argue for Puntrooskie in that category, but it was outcome changing, not necessarily a momentum change, IMO. Two different topics.

Get the punt off? How about picking up 1 foot

[ in reply to 2004 vs. GT ] |

On 2nd down instead of fumbling the ball or picking up 1 yard on a sneak attempt on 3rd down and not punting at all then run out the clock? What made it worse was that was the game the week Chan Gailey said that Clemson was just like all the other places.

all we needed was the first down and we could've run the clock out. We didn't get it. Had to punt. Botched it. And the rest is history.
We had started walking out of the stadium and going to the car during that drive, thinking we had it in the bag. As we were walking outside the South stands we heard a roar from the GT crowd. We scrambled over to some tailgaters watching the game on a projector and watched us lose in the final seconds.

we had a 9-3 regular season and were thumped also by NCstate, GaTech, and South Carolina. Yes, it got out of hand and we were in a "BCS bowl" because we won the ACC that year, but I'd consider us a "smoke & mirrors" good team that year......very inconsistent anyway.
losing to South Carolina in 2012 when we were 10-1 at the time was embarassing.
2013 FSU was very embarrassing. Albeit they were a great team........we didn't show up AT HOME. then follow that up with another South Carolina loss in same year. I know to a lot of fans the LSU win made up for those losses, but not to me.
2017 bama semifinal.....yet again not the loss, but the score was bad and we were handcuffed on offense.
2019- again not the loss itself, but the 17 point margin loss in title game vs LSU then follow up in playoffs again with BAD loss to Ohio State.

sticks in my crawl. I can't think of which year,06-07(?) but we lost to the coots in Death Valley. We were driving for the winning score and Reggie was running wild. Down near the goal line, Bowden pulls him and put James Davis in. Nothing against Davis, but why take Reggie out? Did Bowden want Davis to have glory? I believe so. The decision, more than the loss, stuck with me.

Clemson football history. Taking Reggie out (2006 game) was probably the worst in-game decision I can remember. Jad Dean missed a 39 yard field goal attempt at the end of the game that would have tied it.

On a personal level - Bama 2008
Apr 14, 2021, 3:32 PM

When I consider the amount of buildup, effort and cost associated with attending that game, And then to sit a few rows from the field and watch my tigers get steam-rolled in methodical fashion, I’m not sure I’ve ever been more angry at a Clemson coach after leaving that game. to hand the ball to a true freshman Jamie Harper to start that game was the height of stupidity.

^ This one hurt
It was supposed to be one game that would cement that we were ready. Rebuilt. Focused. We weren't.
But then, the Maryland game a few weeks later was salt in the wound. Then the next one was a 12-7 loss to WF.
I am never embarrassed by a loss. I can only be embarrassed of how we lose. I don't care about WVU because our kids were outcoached but they didn't give up. Kept hustling. In that bama game, our kids quit because it was a fight. They folded.

I think our admin forgave that abysmal showing against Bama but not that inexplicable loss to Maryland at home. That was the final nail in Tommy's coffin. I believe the wheels were finally in motion to relieve him of his duties. The WF loss only sped up the process.

Some of you guys don't go back very far. Not a loss but 18-18 tie against Duke at home in 1976. Duke kicked 6 field goals including the game "tie'er" of 50 plus yards at the buzzer.
Worst/and best for me - my very first game at Clemson - UNC and Don McCauley ran all over us 42-7 in 1970 and I loved every minute of my first football game ever.

embarrassing losses that i was there...........
Apr 14, 2021, 3:48 PM
|
|
The ones that I was in attendance where I was totally embarrassed go like this:
1. 1996 Gator Bowl (1995 season) Syracuse beat us 41-0. They could've named the score. 2. 2002 Tangerine Bowl Texas Tech 55-15. Never understood why TB stuck with CW so long that night. 3. 2002 NCSU on a Thursday night. They just destroyed us at home 38-6. 4. 1998 VPI beat us at home 34-0. It was 31-0 at half and we left. It was obvious what was going on. 5. 1995 UGA beat us in DV with a third team QB and a second team RB. They won 19-17.
I consider any loss to the chickens to be embarrassing because they are inferior to Clemson. Losing to them in football is unacceptable. And the worst part is you have to listen to their fans act like they will never lose to Clemson again. They get this attitude like "yep, the tide has changed". I really don't want to deal with that again.

My worst were when our players gave up. It hasn't happened since 2008. Not that we haven't been blown out but even the WVU orange bowl, FSU in 13, or any sugar bowl, our kids played hard despite a shellacking'. I can live with that... uneasily but that is just motivation for next time. No, when we would quit and you could watch our guys give up, that was always the rub. So on to West/Bowden...
West's final season, especially vs VT... actually VT for a few. UNC 97/01, NC State 2003, those few games in 2004, vt 2006/2007

At home against Nancy State in 2002. I was done with Tammy B from this point on. What a painful 6 additional years after that. ??

Based on personal experience ... 1992 Florida Citrus Bowl

Cal Berkeley 37 Clemson 13. Hatfield's 2nd year coaching. Cal team was good not great, but it put a hit on ACC champ Clemson who did not want to play. The demise of the stocked Tiger team, and Hatfield's relevance in college football continued its decline that day. It was the last ACC championship until 2011.
I remember being supremely confident in a Tiger victory that day, as were the bookmakers. And what a one-sided hopeless beatdown it became. Bad memories.

84 loss to the Coots. That really hurt at the time and got my picture on the front of the State paper, which I did not care about one way or another. Got home with my fiancee (4 weeks until we were married) and found out her sister was killed in a tree cutting accident. That just made the whole month SUCK!

Alabama blow out opener in Atlanta was rough

Bama had a national championship team that year but we were preseason #8 that year for the first time in eons and Tommy B proved that it was way too early to give us that respect. We were not in Bama league yet. Not close.

They didn't win it that year but they were #1 until Tebow beat them in the SEC and then they didn't bother in their Sugar invite.

Looking back last 50 years thank goodness unlike the coots Clemson hasn't suffered really really embarrassing losses to the likes of Appalachian, Furman, Citadel, Navy, Pacific etc. At least those being mentioned are Power 5 schools.
USF in the bowl and Marshall in TB's opening game in 99 are the worse non p-5 losses by the tigers I can think of.

I was at the Duke game... my very first Clemson game and then was a student later with spurrier as head coot
even worse, as a Washington fan, the only time Spurrier was horrible was when he was in the NFL with my team
he would not stop causing me misery

if they stopped fighting. As bad as the WVU game was and even though my Tigers were shell shocked, I don’t think the gave up. Come to think of it, I can’t remember a game when they did. So, at no time has my team embarrassed me. They’ve made my heart ache for them, but I’ve never been embarrassed to be a Tiger.

Clemson was up at halftime 19 -3 in Auburn w/ Cam Newton as QB. That loss hurt along with Calvin Johnson fades in the corner. Plus Joe Hamilton putting the hurt on Clemson. Also the DW4 fumble in Tallahassee went over his head. Any loss to Duke , WF , VA. Md.

embarrassing. Especially because we showed up in droves and got spanked. I'm pretty sure we left when it was 45-0.
I was also at the Bama game in Atlanta. Ugh And the FSU game in 2013 - came back from Penn State from that one. even my students felt bad for me and didn't heckle me that next Monday.
That GT game in '04 was also despicable. I remember my coworker (an OSU alum) was with us and right before the punt he turned to us and said, "I think you have this locked up". He took the the blame and voluntarily uninvited himself to any future games after that, btw.

Defending national champion who lost the opener in a titanic matchup of the last two national champions on Labor Day night versus the dawgs 13-7. We come back home and find ourselves in a dogfight with a team nobody ever heard of and a little 5 ft 6 in QB named Flutie. It wasn’t quite a loss but it sure felt like it coming off the first Natty and going 0-1-1 to start the season. Oh yeah, BC went on to be pretty good the next 3 years but at the time we didn’t know that.

With Dabo your worst loss means your best success is NEXT
Apr 15, 2021, 12:56 PM

I don’t know our record since that 70 million to 33 loss but I can tell you that we have the best coach ever after a big setback. Even the Notre Dame games this past season tells you what our coach is made of.
We will have a great season because Dabo plans to overcome in the long term & win.
My prediction is we will win another Natty in ‘21. That loss to O31O was the first of 5 games but Dabo will correct our deficiencies. Injuries happen & if we are truthful about how different this team would have been with Justin Ross healthy, Ngata & Marshall healthy. We were close to another Natty & who knows if we had been healthy we may have won it all but top 3 in an off year is pretty good, 2nd in ‘19 & a championship in ‘18.
We really need to count our blessings!!

Only game I've ever left early

was when we hosted FSU in 2013. Both teams undefeated, we were #3, they were #5. End of the first, Tajh hit Sammy to make it 17-7 FSU. Still felt like a game. Couple of minutes into the 4th, Freeman ran one in to make it 48-7 and I think that's when I left.
Final score was 51-14, but Stoudt ran in the garbagiest of garbage time TDs with like 13 seconds left. So it was really more like 51-7, and it felt worse than that. Tajh couldn't get anything going and ole Crab Legs whipped us like a rented mule. I agree that the Orange Bowl was probably the worst, but man, FSU in 2013 was a sickening game to attend.

West or Bowden
45-0 season opener at UNCheat - West
45-17 at Wake - Bowden (Thankfully Grobe put in his scrubs so Clemson could get on the scoreboard)
Last second FG loss to Dook - Bowden - Dook students got wind of the score and started flooding into the stadium mid 3rd quarter
55-15 Texas Tech bowl - Bowden - I bet Whitehurst is still sore from the pummeling he took
