The Moscow Mule is from Los Angeles, created around 1941 by John Martin (the first importer of Smirnoff - Americans weren't into vodka back then), his friend, bar-owner Jack Morgan, who wanted to help him move product, and bartender Wes Price. The famous cups? Morgan's girlfriend made those.

I'm big on cocktail history and was even (if I may humble-brag) cited in the Wall Street Journal as definitively uncovering the origin of the Shirley Temple.
