Defensive Strategy Question

3

Jan 9, 2025, 9:31 AM

I'm not a basketball coach by any means, but a thought / question I had during the Lousiville game....

Brad obviously runs a man to man defense 95% of the time, with lots of switching. At least, that's how I observe it. I do notice that other teams run a ton of screens on us and try to get us switched into bad matchups, but most of the time we do a great job of really stifling offensive movement when we are switching well.

However, it is also apparent that in some games, like on Tuesday (and I'm not sure what the other team is doing to accomplish this), we get caught up in that switching game and get sloppy with it and we leave guys open for 3. A lot of our really bad games we get beaten up by the 3 ball at really inopportune times, due to our defenders not quite being able to switch cleanly or stay with their man to guard.

In this case, would it help to switch to a zone style defense temporarily, just to disrupt the other team? Louisville didn't end up shooting that hot fromm 3, but they really got us in the first half with several well timed 3's that were defensive lapses.

We just don't seem to swtich up too much on defense, even when it isn't really working like we want it to, but just a thought.
