Your scheduling idea makes way too much sense

May 16, 2022, 8:28 AM

So obviously they’ll never go for it.

I thought that is exactly what they are proposing and voting on: 3 Permanent and rotate the other 10 in groups of 5 every other year.

The SEC asst commissioner briefed a very comparable plan for the SEC to the Savannah QB Club in Oct 2021. Looks like ACC is just playing copy cat. That said, it makes sense. Why have teams in a football conference if your school never plays those teams? Different fans have different preferences and locations they wish to visit. And variety keeps it fresh.

May 16, 2022, 2:48 PM [ in reply to Your scheduling idea makes way too much sense ]

Unfortunately David's scheduling proposal is unworkable. If our 3 annual rivalries are Ga Tech, NC State, and FSU, and year 1 we are @ two of them and home for one, with @ 2 of the remaining 5 and home for the 3 others (4 home and 4 away), then in year 3 if we simply flip-flopped home/away with Year 1's 5 then we would still be @ 2 and home for 1 among the annuals, yet @ 3 and home for 2 against the other 5 (5 away, 3 home), unless we flipped venues with annuals also, which would mean two consecutive years of either home or away games there.

The non-annual games would either require the same 5 in back to back years then swap for the next 5 for the next two years in order to align with the annual schedules, or a schedule that would rotate out and in 2 to 3 of the remaining 10 teams annually, with back-to-back home/away games for each, but changing a few from season to season once two in a row occurred. The latter is my preference as I'd rather see our schedule change a few games annually than one massive change every two years for the next two.

The wild west of practically unregulated NIL combined with

May 16, 2022, 8:45 AM

the free agency of the transfer portal is proving to be a problem for college football. Even with these problems Clemson is still doing well from what I can tell.

What does concern me is the "inbreeding" of our coaching staff particularly on offense where just about all of the position coaches are former Clemson "dudes" (Kyle Richardson being the lone exception). I'm wondering how all this young coach inbreeding is working out on recruiting trail...

Dabo has all the confidence in the world in these young, former players so I guess I should too. However it still bothers me that we had such a bad, stagnate, predictable offense last year and after watching the Spring game it feels like we still have the same problems.

Re: TNET: Monday Notebook: NIL and Clemson recruiting, scheduling scenario

May 16, 2022, 9:10 AM

David, I've thought oh well, we're not going to load up on 4 star players every recruiting season like we were doing when Clemson and Dabo rose to the top of the FB scene the way we did. That Dabo could load up on 3 star players, coach them up to like a 4 or 5 star player by their Junior, or Senior season where they become starters, and top back ups. Once that system has gotten to a yearly rotation, we could rise back to the top again, as long as we can continue to recruit and sign top QBs with an NIL deal through a business in or around Clemson.

After thinking about how that could work out for Dabo, and Clemson, the thought run through my head, what's to stop those recruits that Clemson has put so much time into coaching them up to play top college FB, what is going to stop another school with big NIL deals to get word to those top players that our coaching staff has worked endless hours of coaching those guys up, and have made into the type of top athlete they are as a Junior/Senior, and coaches with no morals, and they know no rules, and talk our player into the transfer portal, and they go and play for for the dirt bag coaches their Junior/Senior season with an NIL deal!!!! For that to work in the way I feel it could work, the NCAA needs to be pressures into putting a restriction on player that use the transfer portal. If that don't happen, Clemson should just drop any athletic programs that the NIL can be used to steal coached up athletic players!!!

By chance have you thought what if Dabo, and coaches used their coaching skills to develop our players into a 4-5 star status, and what could be done to deter those guys from leaving after they have been dirty recruited after they had been turned into top Juniors or Seniors???

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Doom and gloom though

May 16, 2022, 9:20 AM

"what is going to stop another school with big NIL deals... and coaches with no morals, and they know no rules, and talk our player into the transfer portal, and they go and play for for the dirt bag coaches their Junior/Senior season with an NIL deal!!!!"

Clemson, of ALL places, is special in who they get to come here in the first place. Don't forget that.

Players leave EVERY program. Every single one. They leave Ohio State in droves. They leave Alabama & lead other teams to the playoffs. They leave Texas and... come back to Texas.

Would any of y'all not be surprised if Clemson started losing its biggest names to Lamborghini deals? I mean, we had the first player with a nationwide TV campaign; he didn't leave, but came here from the other side of the country. We take it for granted, & that's human nature, but it's like we FORGOT to notice all the good Clemson is doing including with NIL.

Like I said, Clemson is special. It is. We're not bulletproof, but the program is better equipped to handle this stuff than anywhere else. Why Clemson Nation isn't seeing it that way at-large is what really bugs me; we've become a "believe it when I see it" culture, even though Clemson has made us believers countless times under Coach Swinney just in football alone.

What if, for example, Clemson's Reign institute becomes the definition of the future of NIL and it results in more and more 4 & 5-star recruits choosing to try getting into Clemson? What if Clemson is stronger than ever, rather than being poached into oblivion by selfish rich men & greedy 19-year-olds?

It doesn't seem that far-fetched to me that Clemson is going to be vastly better than OK, & extremely soon, too. Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

THIS!

May 16, 2022, 9:10 AM

All of this!

OK, some of it is inaccurate, but the bottom line is WE as Clemson Nation seem to be taking on a "doom and gloom" attitude about NIL & how it affects Clemson's future competing against "the rich."

NIL isn't bad. It isn't evil like the fat guys behind desks getting billions while the players on the field couldn't have any of it (or even have a job, like Coach Swinney did).
Using NIL in bad ways is wrong, & some places are doing that more than others, but it is NOT defining the sport, certainly not yet, & the biggest offenders so-to-speak (Tennessee is a good example) won't last in the future.

Clemson will.

There seems to be this idea that Clemson ISN'T using NIL in any way & we're falling behind; we're not buying players with cash, we're not partnering with Greenville's BMW plant to get players deals on luxury cars, we don't have a collective of rich people to form a money pool, et al. Yeah, we're not using the transfer portal. Yeah, the portal becoming a reality at the same as NIL is essentially too much to handle.

But Clemson is still weeks away from the launch of the first-of-its-kind NIL & Branding Institute, Reign, & I sincerely believe this method of providing resources to teach branding & marketing is what NIL will eventually be defined by. Consequently, it will help bring in players; they just won't be juniors in the portal, so they get no notice, no explosion on social media. Like, it feels like an awful lot of Clemson voices are in no way prepared for another ACC title this year; we used to go nuts for just the idea of it, & it's here, right now.

In all sincerity, Clemson may very well define what NIL is in all of college sports better than anyone. That might sound drastic & optimistic, but man, the way we've gotten SO pessimistic in Clemson nation in spite of Coach Swinney's attitude & leadership just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If we don't scream and shout about the good Clemson's doing, you really think CBS Sports or a Texas fan board gonna do it for us?

The future's so bright, & NIL is an inescapable part of it. Go Tigers!

Re: TNET: Monday Notebook: NIL and Clemson recruiting, scheduling scenario

May 16, 2022, 9:16 AM

I still don't get the "buy players" deal. NIL requires an athlete to receive a 1099 or a W-2 for money he or she receives. It is easy to say anything, just ask Trump, and think it is true. What evidence can anyone show that a school is employing players?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Monday Notebook: NIL and Clemson recruiting, scheduling scenario

May 16, 2022, 9:27 AM

I see what you mean.

In the case of Tennessee, for example, they're not paying a player $8 million dollars... but a group of Tennessee fans are. He has a contract... but it's not specific to staying at Tennessee, in a sense. Bottom line, it's extremely fishy & reads like it's trying to get around several loopholes (which is certainly the case), & those loopholes are just as likely to be closed very soon.

But that's an extremely rare case & not the definition of NIL. We give Clemson players money every semester for good grades. We teach them how to market & brand themselves & give them the tools to do it, a critical skill set in the 21st century for any business.

The implication that TAMU bought this class is still just message board stuff; I would have thought David would know better but he may be being deliberately cynical instead, hard to say, but the Tennessee one is a clearer example because it's verified and it's for a single player, one who showed little interest in UT from Hawaii & after a single in-home visit committed to the Vols. Again, this is singularly rare, but to do it they're not using W-2's even though there is a legitimate contract.

Clemson is erring on the side of what we think is right. It happens to also look safe. I don't think that's a bad thing, & my guess is we'll all agree when the NCAA starts making changes to what they let go; they will NEVER be able to enforce everything, make no mistake (they're down to like 15 enforcement officers after the pandemic, FWIW), but the big fish like this Tennessee thing are the ones that they won't be able to ignore & frankly make easy work for enforcement.

working hand in hand with the school, is buying the player.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes

May 16, 2022, 9:59 AM

While the TAMU thing was never confirmed & seems to be explicitly an internet message board rumor, it's not like we haven't seen Jimbo have the top-ever-rated class in the sport before.

In fact, the last time he did it... Florida State missed a bowl game for the first time in my life with the same class.

But the Tennessee thing is legit, & yes, it's semantics. I suppose that was my point; they're doing it in a way to deliberately skirt the rules, like shooting someone with a pistol & saying, "the bullet did it, not me!"

It's why I think they're likely on the short list of busts for these rare kinds of deals & he'll be a poster boy for what not to do, & Clemson will be the opposite.

Has nothing to do with money. Dabo has put coaches in place who are great guys and his friends. No experience recruiting or coaching at this level. They may get there but it will be years. Others have learned from Clemson, caught and now passed us by embracing the changes. We are not the cool destination and are going to take a big step back. Could have been avoided.

Serious question, albeit I don't see it; I don't see similar leaders at other programs, for example, & building new facilities has been the most essential recruiting tool for the last 25 years or so.

Re: TNET: Monday Notebook: NIL and Clemson recruiting, scheduling scenario

May 16, 2022, 9:52 AM

Because teams have up years and down years, there is no way to have a balanced schedule every year in a 14 team league. What seems good one year can be totally out of balance the next year. The 3 permanent teams absolutely must be fairly set up or the idea will be a disaster. If we were to have Ga Tech, Fla State and NC State as you suggest and Pitt were to have BC, Syracuse and Virgina Tech would that be balanced to start with?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Schedules are imbalanced by nature

May 16, 2022, 10:03 AM

Schedules are imbalanced by nature, I agree with that.

That's a big reason why I think schedules should deliberately include SOMETHING of competitive relevance.

For example, for the first time ever we have a singular ranking system.

Yet that ranking system is only used for two games a year, & the winners play each other for the national title.

What if we used those rankings from the previous year to create matchups for the next season? Yes, teams fluctuate with how good or bad they are, but at least it's something better than saying this team gets to play Vanderbilt or Georgia Tech every year no matter what.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

May 16, 2022, 10:14 AM

May 16, 2022, 10:25 AM

2020 was a one-off.

Yeah, it was the most-watched "ACC" game of all time, but these new potential changes to the ACC schedule & how a champion is determined don't affect Notre Dame still being an ACC member of every sport they participate in EXCEPT football.

Bottom line, they are ineligible to compete for an ACC title in football, for better or worse.

Every team's fans want to play the teams with good game atmosphere. Unfortunately, they can't.

With Georgia Tech, Florida State, and N.C. State, we have the most obvious three permanent rivals in the conference.

At least we will now know we are playing in Blacksburg once every four years! And hosting them in between.

Re: TNET: Monday Notebook: NIL and Clemson recruiting, scheduling scenario

May 16, 2022, 11:26 AM

247 Sports has us at 35th in 2023 recruiting, with three commitments. That puts us one spot ahead of Alabama, for those who want some optimism.

That considered, there seems to be little buzz about us contending for elite players right now. Dabo's has not hidden his disdain for some of the direction that CFB has headed and that passes through to recruits. The disinterest in transfers doesn't help.

While I think both NIL and the portal will normalize and Dabo is taking the right approach for the longer term, the lack of flexibility could put us in a bad spot in the short term - especially in 2023.

As to scheduling, this has been a long time coming. I look forward to regularly playing all of the teams in the conference.

May 17, 2022, 6:37 PM

Many players have been explict about choosing a school because of NIL deals, including with transfers.
