I, just like most fans was extremely disappointed in the loss Thursday. For whatever reason I never had the belief in this team that I did last years team. I do believe in an earlier post someone mentioned not having an Alpha. I agree with that being part of the issue. I said the same to someone yesterday as we were talking about what happened. I’ve heard people complaining about the coach and the players. Obviously it is on both, the coach cannot make them hit wide open shots or control their effort. One thing I do worry about is just the mental state of mind of our teams. We rarely seem to play with confidence, and that can be instilled by the coach. I think of it similarly to when Dabo just brought in Tom Allen. Maybe our offensive and defensive schemes in basketball are too complex and do not let the players play freely. You play sports the best when you aren’t having to think and have confidence. That seemed to be the problem with our defense in football last year. Maybe it would help to loosen up a little and let them play to win, not play “not to lose” or be scared to make a mistake. That is also why out freshmen, especially guards rarely play. I could be wrong as I am not around the program but could be another problem.
Much truth to what you say. Other bball coaches have been, or are like this now. I think Dean Smith, for all his success, kept a tight clamp on his teams' stye of play. Michael Jordan, one of the top players of all time, only averaged 17+ ppg in college. Over 30 ppg in the much more difficult NBA.
Maybe some coaches believe in themselves more than in their players.
